I’m finding this piece difficult to write. There is a mix of emotions swirling around my mind. Seeing what to write, and writing it simply and clearly is difficult. Steve Jobs saw clearly, and simply. We all know who he was, and what he achieved.
So I’ll keep this short, clear and simple.
Steve, you dared to think different and you changed the world. You are sorely missed and we will never forget you. To your wife Laurene, your children, and everyone you have ever met and those you have not, our deepest sympathies.
I’ll leave you with some words of Steve from his 2005 Stanford Address
"Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."

Cars 2: “Frankly, it’s too good for that.”

Just a brief note here of an article everyone should read by Michael Cavna, on Comic Riffs over at the Washington Post.

Cavna ponders whether Pixar’s latest blockbuster Cars 2, has performed so poorly critically due to "overheated expectations". I’m currently in a country where Cars 2 hasn’t been released, so I am unable to comment precisely on how accurate Cavna is, however, the article does sum up my sentiments on how this could have happened.

I don’t want to steal the punchline from the article, but please do read it, Pixar Pile-Up: Is ‘Cars 2’ crashing into overheated expectations?

New Cars 2 Characters: Meet Professor Z + Tomber!

Two new characters from Cars 2 have rolled out to meet us today, Professor Z (voiced by Thomas Kretschmann) and Tomber (voiced by Michel Michelis).

Professor Z Official Description:

Copyright Disney/PixarProfessor Z, aka “The Professor,” is an internationally wanted weapons designer in a small, sophisticated German package. He is a brilliant, but mad monocle-wearing scientist who is plotting to sabotage the World Grand Prix. Though his true motive is unclear, Professor Z is willing to do whatever it takes to eliminate all obstacles and keep the “project” on schedule.

Tomber Official Description:

Copyright Disney/PixarTomber is a dubious little French car with an unusual, and very unstable, three-wheeled design that befits the meaning of his name – to fall. By trade he deals car parts from a stall in a Parisian market—though his questionable merchandise sources have led to his reluctant acquaintance with British secret agent Finn McMissile.

Is “Newt” Dead? Cars 2 Having Production Problems?

Is Pixar's Newt dead?It’s taken a couple of days for us to catch onto this big rumour floating about the interwebs. Disney veteran Floyd Norman posted a comment on The Animation Guild Blog indicating that Gary Rydstrom’s feature film directorial debut, newt, is dead. 

"Oh, and "Newt" is dead." writes Norman. When he was asked to elaborate further, he replies, "Naturally, our pals up north run a tight ship, so it’s not polite to provide details at this time." Michael of Progress City, USA thinks that Monster’s Inc. 2 will fill that gap in the Pixar timeline.

Norman also commented on The Bear and the Bow, "However, I have had the opportunity to speak with Brenda Chapman, and I’m looking forward to her film. As far as the release date, you’ll have to wait for Disney to disclose that."

In related news, Michael writes on Progress City, USA

"In stranger news, I’ve had two sources independently hint to me that Cars 2 is actually having production problems, and I’ve seen that rumor posted anonymously today on the Animation Guild’s blog. Whispering campaign or fact, I don’t know, but it’s something to keep an eye out for."

This is all rumours at the moment and we can only wait for an official word from the Mouse or Pixar. With newt due for release in 2012, hopefully it’s not too long.

John Lasseter to be Inducted into Toy Industry Hall of Fame [UPDATE]

John Lasseter is to be inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame tomorrow (Saturday, 13 February 2010) in New York. 

“As the director of blockbuster movies such as Toy Story and Cars, John Lasseter has brought toys to life on the big screen,” explained Alan Hassenfeld, chair of the Hall of Fame Committee and 1994 Hall of Fame inductee.

Wal-Mart’s founder will also be inducted alongside Lasseter:

“Sam Walton helped to get toys into the hands of millions of children by carrying his own passion for toys and kids into the design of Wal-Mart’s toy departments, making them a destination for young consumers.”

Also there are HD editions available (as per usual) at Apple Trailers. If you can spare the bandwidth, I recommend them in glorious HD. There are lots of new characters and goodies to behold here. /Film asks if that is Totoro making a cameo appearance.

Pixar Finance Chief Named Twitter CFO

Pixar Financial Chief, Ali Rowghani named Twitter CFOAlmost every living person in the western world has heard of Twitter. It’s absolutely huge. We’re tweeting, Stephen Fry is tweeting, even Toy Story 3 director, Lee Unkrich is tweeting. It’s a phenomenon, and some might say a fad. 

The 2 1/2 year old internet startup has hired Pixar’s Financial Chief, Ali Rowghani, as its Chief Financial Operator. Rowghani is set to begin in March.
Rowghani’s start comes as the company focuses on "creating value for our users and capturing the financial opportunities that result from it," Twitter Chief Executive Officer Evan Williams said in a statement on Wednesday.

Toy Story 3 Teaser Trailer #2Another Toy Story 3 teaser trailer has hit the interwebs for all of us to enjoy. The 32 second spot is available in resolutions up to 720p for viewing on YouTube.

Unfortunately we can’t embed the clip here for your viewing pleasure, so you’ll just have to settle for the pretty screengrab on the right and watch the teaser here!

The final trailer for Toy Story 3 is due to hit our computer monitors sometime on Thursday (US Time), as well as the unveil of 12 more of 14 new characters! Be sure to stay tuned to Upcoming Pixar over that time to keep up to date with all the TS3 happenings.

New Toy Story 3 Characters Revealed!

It has begun! Disney have started the big unveil of, not one, not two, but FOURTEEN new Toy Story 3 characters!

ComingSoon.net got exclusive access to ‘Peas-in-a-Pod’. They are described as…

"Peas-in-a-Pod will quickly become a parent’s favorite on-the-go toy. The soft, plush pod secures the happy peas inside with a durable metal zipper, making it perfect for the car or stroller. The Peas-in-a-Pod plush toy also develops fine motor skills by catering to a child’s natural grab instinct. Pulling the three peas out of the pod will provide repeated enjoyment for infants and toddlers, and soon they’ll learn to put them back in! Machine washable. Not for human consumption."

The link above also contains a video with a 360º view of the character. Aint It Cool News got their hands on the first look of Ken Doll. Ken really needs no introduction, so I shan’t post a description here other than to say he is Barbie’s boyfriend. 

There are still twelve more characters to be unveiled before the launch of the final trailer for Toy Story 3 on Thursday. Stay tuned for more characters here and finally the trailer when it is available!
Update: It’s been revealed that the characters will be unveiled up until March 31st.
