Cars 2 has received a "G" rating by the Motion Picture Association of America.
This comes as a huge surprise, to me at least. From what we were shown at the Pixar event earlier this year, there were some scenes that were intense enough to warrant a higher rating.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a "G" rating, in fact it should work in Pixar’s favor. Let’s be honest, the franchise is extremely popular with the younger set and they’d be devastated if they were alienated— by their parents, of course. In any case, the comedy and action sequences shown so far should play well with any age group.
Note: Besides The Incredibles and Up, every Pixar film has received a G rating from the MPAA. Maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised by Cars 2.

It’s because all the characters are cars. The MPAA tolerates different levels of violence when it comes to human characters vs. non-human characters. If Up had been the exact same film, but portrayed with non-human characters I don’t think it would have ben PG.
Think about it, The Incredibles and Up have been Pixar’s only PG films, and they are also the only two Pixar films outside of Ratatouille that contain a cast primarily of human characters. Cars 2 would have likely been PG if the characters were human rather than cars.
Illusion makes a strong point, but for the life of me I am STILL surprised that Toy Story 3 walked away with a ‘G’ Rating with such an intense finale. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the movie, and I felt that the story was wonderful and the various contexts surrounding that climax was perfectly fine for kids and folks of all ages.
My surprise just comes from the MPAA decision to rate it ‘G’ simply because they do seem to be IMO a bit touchy about — well, anything really — more often than not.
Then again, maybe it was the context that it more intense than what the event actually was. Maybe being invested in the characters suddenly made me feel the movie should be bumped two Ratings d:

ratings don’t affect box office. And don’t forget what “Rated G” means: General Audience. The widest possible audience—and the biggest box office.
Yep, “higher” ratings don’t make better movies, but given the trailer, I was thinking it would be PG….the rating system has been getting more lax over the years….they call it the ratings “creep” or something like that.
