To add to Sunday’s announcement that casting has started on John Carter of Mars, Andrew Stanton confirmed that the forthcoming project will be done at Disney instead of Pixar in a Sci Fi Wire interview.
During LA Film Critics Awards (where WALL•E won Best Picture) Andrew stated, "Well, it’s not being done by the Pixar crew. It’s being done by Disney, and I’m sort of being loaned out. We’re sort of using any element that we need to to make the film right. We’re not being purist with Pixar, but Pixar’s a brand that you have to trust that’s for all ages. This story of John Carter is not going to be an all-ages film."
What we know so far:
• Mark Andrews is co-writing.
• Andrew Stanton is going for his own look.
• Pixar will not do special effects
• It’s a Disney production.
• First draft done.
• Casting has started.
Now where’s the news on Brad Bird’s 1906?

Interesting news. I was rather worried that it might be done in part by Pixar, since the thematic material of this particular series seems to contain more adult content, so I’m kind of relieved that it’s being done at Disney Studios instead. Hopefully, the final result will be exceptional, if not outstanding. I look forward to its release. In the meantime, I’ll have to read the books….

I was actually looking forward to a live action film, and a film of this genre to be done by Pixar… I wonder what made Pixar refer the project to Disney, or if even Andrew was going to direct it for Pixar at all. Maybe we all jumped to conclusions when he said he would be directing it and assumed he would be directing for Pixar. Andrew will be directing, but other than that it will be a Disney film. Maybe Disney will be able to produce a good recent film for once.
At least we have 1906 to look forward to for Pixar breaking the mold. Rumours were floating around Brad Bird was going to film it at Fox Studios in Sydney (I hope so!). Maybe you could look into that.
