Pixar’s Awards Season Rundown

The Golden Globes have already passed, with Soul taking away the award for Best Animated Feature, and Best Original Soundtrack, but the 2020 awards season has only really just begun for the animation industry. The Academy Awards ceremony is a little later this year due to COVID-19, and the Annie Awards nominations have just been revealed.

Pixar have earned an impressive 20 Annie Awards nominations, and 4 Academy Awards Nominations. Read on to learn when the winners are being announced, so you can add the dates into your diaries, and which categories Pixar have a chance of winning!

First up: the 93rd Academy Awards. Pixar have secured nominations in Best Animated Feature, Best Short Film (Animated), Best Sound, and Best Original Music, with Onward, Soul, and Burrow. The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony will be on Sunday 25th April. See the breakdown below:

And finally, the Annie Awards – specifically dedicated to animation. It’s no surprise that Pixar have picked up a fair few nominations here, but 20 is noteworthy! The 28th Annie Awards ceremony will take place on Friday 16th April, 7PM PST. We won’t include an exhaustive list of all the categories here with all nominees included, but you can find the full list here.

A Breakdown of Toy Story 4's Award Nominations

Toy Story 4 has been picking up nominations from all over the place this awards season, as is often the case for Pixar movies. It can get a little difficult to keep track of them all and work out when we’ll find out the results for each of the awards ceremonies. With Toy Story 4 recently gaining a couple more nominations this past week, we’ve compiled a list of the more notable nominations plus when the winners will be announced.

Pixar Appears Twice In Oscars Shortlists

The 2020 Oscars shortlists have been revealed for 9 categories: Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film and Visual Effects. Pixar appears in the shortlists twice, and we couldn’t be more happy and hopeful for the teams involved.
Randy Newman’s “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from Toy Story 4 has been shortlisted for Best Music (Original Song). Newman’s music always evokes such a strong sense of nostalgia in me, partly because it brings me back to watching Pixar movies on VHS tapes, but also because the lyrics are always so thoughtful.

The wonderful Sparkshort Kitbull, directed by Rosana Sullivan and produced by Kathryn Hendrickson, has also been shortlisted for Best Animated Short Film. It’s great to see one of the Sparkshorts gaining attention in the awards season, especially with them missing out at the Annie Awards nominations. Out of all the Sparkshorts that Pixar released on YouTube, Kitbull currently has the most views, and holds the record for the most tears I have shed while watching an animated cat.

Good luck to all those that have been shortlisted! As ever, we’re intrigued to see how the awards season plays out.
So far this season, Toy Story 4 has been nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes, and at the Annie Awards it gained 6 nominations: Best Feature, Best FX (Alexis Angelidis, Amit Ganapati Baadkar, Greg Gladstone, Kylie Wijsmuller and Matthew Kiyoshi Wong), Best Music (Randy Newman), Best Voice Acting (Tony Hale as Forky), Best Writing (Stephany Folsom and Andrew Stanton), and Best Editorial (Axel Geddes, Torbin Xan Bullock and Greg Snyder).

Incredibles 2 Receives 2 Annie Awards

Awards season is officially here, and Incredibles 2 has already received acclaim at the Annie Awards. Having picked up 11 nominations, it was in with a good chance of at least one category win, so I’m sure the crew are ecstatic to have walked away with awards in both Music in an Animated Feature Production and Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production.

Michael Giacchino is famously the composer for both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, and the sequel’s score somehow packed even more of a punch than the original.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees at this year’s Annie Awards! It’s always the highlight of the awards season to see the fantastic array of animated features, shorts, and series that we’re lucky enough to co-exist with at the moment.

Incredibles 2 Nominated for Golden Globe Award

The nominations for Incredibles 2 keep rolling in – just after receiving 11 nominations at the Annie Awards, it has now been nominated for Best Animated Motion Picture at the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Incredibles 2 sits amongst fellow worthy nominees Isle of Dogs, Mirai, Ralph Breaks The Internet, and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
The Golden Globe awards will air on January 6th, so we’ve just got a month until we find out the result! Regardless of the outcome, it’s great to see Incredibles 2 receiving so much praise – we’re beyond happy for the entire crew.
Following the nomination announcements, director Brad Bird revealed that he was initially worried the sequel wouldn’t prove as popular as the original – he was afraid superheroes wouldn’t be ‘in’ any more. (Ironic, given the fact that the new animated Spider-Man movie has also been nominated for best animated feature.) But he realised that Incredibles is more than a superhero movie – family is at the core of these films, even during those classic fight scenes.

“I thought, two years from now — because it takes a while to make these things — are people going to be sick of superheroes? But then I remembered that what drew me to the idea and made the idea appealing to me in the first place was that it was primarily a film about families — and they just happened to be superheroes. And to me, family is an endlessly fascinating subject because it’s in everyone’s lives.”

Coco takes center stage at the 2018 Annie Awards

A huge congratulations is in order for all the talented Pixar employees who helped make Coco a reality – it took center stage at the Annie Awards ceremony last night by picking up 11 trophies!

Coco has been wowing audiences around the world since its release in Mexico last October – it has since picked up the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, and has been nominated for an impressive number of awards. The whole Coco crew had already done themselves proud by receiving 13 nominations at the 2018 Annie Awards, but going away with 11 wins (including Best Animated Feature) at the ceremony last night was truly well deserved. Here are all of Coco‘s winning categories:

Amongst those accepting the trophy for Character Design was Daniela Strijleva (who created this incredible concept art for Héctor and his many disguises).

Anthony Gonzalez, at only 12 years old, won the Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting award for voicing the charming, kind-hearted protagonist Miguel. Adrian Molina was amongst those credited for not only the writing award, but also the music and directing awards.
Cars 3 was also nominated for 2 awards (Best Animated Feature and Outstanding Achievement for Animated Effects in an Animated Production) but failed to pick up any trophies, with Coco really shaping up to be the stand-out Pixar movie of 2017 (or indeed the stand-out movie of 2017).
The next big awards ceremony will be The Academy Awards – exactly one month away (4th March 2018) – in which Coco has been nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. We have a lot to say on the subject of the Oscars so stay tuned! As always, we’d love to hear your predictions.

Coco picks up a BAFTA nomination

Coco is continuing its successful trend this awards season after picking up a British Academy Film Awards nomination for Best Animated Film. Its fellow nominees are Polish-British Loving Vincent, and Swiss-French My Life as a Courgette. It’s nice to see such a diverse selection of movies in this category. The three nominees perfectly demonstrate how varied and exciting the world of animation is, all exhibiting different themes, animation techniques, and nationalities.

The BAFTA awards ceremony will taken place on February 18th – just over a month away. We’ll have our fingers crossed for Pixar, but all the nominees would be very worthy winners. Coco nominated for two Golden Globe awards

The award nominations are still streaming in for Pixar’s latest movie Coco. It’s already dominating the Annies Awards with an impressive 13 nominations, and now it’s been nominated for two awards at the 2018 Golden Globes – ‘Best Animated Feature Film’ and ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘Remember Me’. It’s been amazing seeing how Coco has affected the world in the short time since its release. 13 Annies Awards nominations, 2 Golden Globe nominations, thousands of overwhelmingly positive and touching reviews – and it’s not even out worldwide yet! In the US, it has topped the weekend box office for 3 weeks in a row, something that only 3 other Pixar movies has achieved (Toy Story and Toy Story 2 topped the box office 2 weeks in a row, and Finding Dory topped it an impressive 4 weeks in a row). And this is only the beginning of Coco‘s journey to inevitably becoming a beloved classic.

Congratulations to Pixar on 4 Annie Award Nominations

Yesterday the nominees for the 44th Annual Annie Awards were announced. Like every year, the Annie Awards are a celebration of all the hard work and fantastic accomplishments that are achieved in the animation community. So many different fields within the medium are honored, such as Character Animation in a Video Game, Storyboarding in both Feature and TV Production, Voice Acting, and even Best Student Film. There are so many unsung heroes of the industry that it’s inspiring to see everyone come together to honor the work that has been done. The awards have also been known to be a huge predictor as to what films take home the pivotal Golden Statue otherwise known as the Oscar.
Pixar landed a brilliant 4 nominations in crucial categories. Finding Dory was nominated for Best Animated Feature, Piper got the honor of being nominated for Best Animated Short Subject; while Finding Dory racked another 2 nominations in Character Animation in an Animated Feature Production and Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production. A lot of top quality films have been released from all of the major studios this year – so it will be rather interesting to see which production wins. Regardless, a massive congratulations to all who were involved with animated projects this year. Each film, TV show, or game released only opens up the doors to more possibilities. It’s truly exciting to see how animation continues to grow year after year.
