March is Women\u2019s History Month, and we couldn\u2019t let it pass by without continuing our \u2018heroines of Pixar\u2019 series. In case you missed it, here is last month\u2019s spotlight on the strong and adorable Dot from A Bug\u2019s Life<\/em>. <\/a>
\nIt\u2019s hard to choose just one Pixar heroine to write about (which is why I\u2019m glad this is going to be an indefinite series) \u2013 there are so many influential female characters that have brought out in the best in Pixar\u2019s movies over the years. But I\u2019ve settled on Joy from Inside Out, <\/em>a film full to the brim with a refreshing variety of heroines.

Making Riley happy is so important to Joy – here she looks up at Riley with total adoration.<\/p><\/div>
\nJoy is interesting, because for much of the movie, she\u2019s acting as the antagonist without even knowing it. She\u2019s a little like Woody from Toy Story <\/em>in the way she sacrifices herself for Riley \u2013 it\u2019s only later that she discovers she\u2019s been sacrificing others too. Joy is the most dominant of Riley\u2019s five emotions in headquarters. She\u2019s the boss, and she takes her position very seriously. Because she is in charge of expressing Riley\u2019s happiness, it\u2019s understandable why Joy is so determined to take centre stage \u2013 being happy is all that matters, right? Inside Out <\/em>very cleverly reminds us, or even teaches us, that happiness shouldn\u2019t always be the only emotion to aim towards. All emotions are important, and the development of Joy\u2019s character encapsulates this message perfectly.

\nWhy Joy is inspiring:<\/strong>
\nJoy more than lives up to her name \u2013 she explodes onto the screen with confidence, happiness, and determination. She\u2019s funny, in-your-face, and \u2013 honestly? \u2013 a bit annoying. And that last bit, weirdly, is why she serves as such an inspiration to me. She\u2019s flawed<\/em>. And by the end of the movie, she completely admits she was wrong while still remaining true to herself. Admitting to your own mistakes, especially if it\u2019s an inbuilt personality trait, is one of the hardest things to do, but Joy does it so well<\/strong>. <\/em>Joy\u2019s mistake was a drastic one: she valued her own role and her own beliefs above all others, which sent Riley\u2019s emotional state into total chaos. But she fixed it, she changed the error in her ways, and she mended the friendships that she\u2019d harmed along the way. I think everyone can take a little inspiration from that.
\nPeople often say they want \u2018strong female characters\u2019, and Joy fits into that category pretty well. But it\u2019s her vulnerability that makes her an inspiration.<\/strong> When she falls into Riley\u2019s Memory Dump with Bing Bong, her grief is so deep and raw, but she finds strength in that moment of fragility, picks herself up, and finds a way through it. One minute she\u2019s at rock bottom, and then the next minute she\u2019s flying a rocket in order to start her heroic rescue mission. Go, Joy!

\nIn The Art Of Inside Out<\/em>, Amy Poehler, the voice of Joy, gives a brief introduction to the book and talks about how much she enjoyed being a part of the process. Playing Joy, she writes, \u201chas added extra years to my life\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was able to spend hours Living in Joy, which meant I could speak from the heart and love with abandon.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nSome little facts about Joy\u2019s character:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • All of the Inside Out <\/em>emotions are based off of simple shapes. Joy is based off of a star, which you can see much more clearly in the \u2018abstract thought\u2019 scene.<\/li>\n
  • In an earlier version of the film, Joy and Fear were the ones that had a journey outside of headquarters instead of Joy and Sadness.<\/li>\n
  • Joy was originally going to be called \u2018Optimism\u2019.<\/li>\n
