Pixar movies have this magical quality to them. They somehow manage to present themselves in our lives at just the right time \u2013 it\u2019s amazing how current and relevant they reliably are despite being in production for years beforehand. Soul <\/em>is no exception. In fact, it might be the most \u2018timely\u2019 Pixar movie yet. (Ironic, given the fact that it\u2019s been delayed multiple times due to COVID-19).<\/p>\n

This is an important point to make, though: the one way that Soul <\/em>is not <\/strong>\u2018timely\u2019 is that it\u2019s the first Pixar movie to feature a Black protagonist at the centre of its story. This didn\u2019t come at the \u2018perfect time\u2019. This was long overdue.<\/p>\n

In every other regard, though, Soul <\/em>has arrived exactly<\/strong> on time. It\u2019s a top tier Pixar movie for a multitude of reasons, but most powerfully because of how hard it hits in the year 2020.<\/p>\n

First off \u2013 the look and sound of Soul <\/em>is\u2026full of soul, unsurprisingly.<\/h2>\n

At this point, you\u2019d think we would have stopped being surprised by how beautiful Pixar movies continue to be. But you will absolutely gasp at so many scenes in Soul<\/em>, at how much of a marvel they are. And not in a \u201cwow I can\u2019t believe how real this looks\u201d way \u2013 there are parts of Soul <\/em>that have unreal beauty<\/em>. This movie shows you places that you would never see outside of your wildest imagination \u2013 \u2018The Great Before\u2019, and astral planes – but it also shows you places that are immediately familiar and recognisable. The streets of New York City feel so authentic \u2013 they\u2019re realised with such a sense of joy and vibrancy. And the diversity of character designs is such a delight.<\/p>\n

This mastery of recreating the real world and<\/em> creating new worlds from scratch was vital in bringing Soul<\/em>\u2019s story to life. Joe Gardner, an aspiring jazz pianist, is suddenly plunged into the afterlife on the very day his dream career seemed to finally be coming together. Feeling that his life was only just starting, he needs to fight his way back to Earth and avoid having to move on into \u2018The Great Beyond\u2019.<\/p>\n

As with Pixar\u2019s 2017 film Coco<\/em>, music plays a huge role in the plot and themes of Soul<\/em>, so it\u2019s appropriate that it\u2019s been treated and represented so passionately. Coco<\/em>\u2019s guitar playing sequences are breath-taking \u2013 the way the animation captured the intricate fingering is incredible. Soul <\/em>achieved this impressive feat again and more. Joe\u2019s piano-playing sequences feel so raw and wonderfully observed. Dorothea Williams playing the saxophone is mesmerising.<\/p>\n

The soundtrack is also fittingly soulful \u2013 a magical mix of Jon Batiste\u2019s jazz and Reznor and Ross\u2019 otherworldly modern tracks.<\/p>\n

Soul \u2013 <\/em>the best thing to come out of the year 2020?<\/h2>\n

Soul <\/em>gives us an imaginative insight into what happens when we die, but it is a film about life<\/strong>. It\u2019s strangely ironic that a film that so confidently celebrates life has had to face so many delays due to the year 2020. The pandemic has forced people to \u2018put their lives on hold\u2019 until we can get back to actually living<\/em> and \u2018fulfilling our purposes\u2019 again. But this is why I feel Soul <\/em>couldn\u2019t have come about at a better time. When I say that Soul <\/em>is a movie about life, I mean life in its simplest essence. It\u2019s not about life\u2019s complexity, or its milestones or hurdles. Soul <\/em>celebrates just\u2026living. Watching the sky. Going for walks. Feeling the wind on your face. In a year where so much has been stripped away from us, it\u2019s so wonderful that Soul <\/em>has reminded us to find joy in the little things.<\/p>\n
