Can Someone Help Me With my PS2 Problems?

My PS2, though it worked yesterday, is now acting very odd. It boot up once, but then stopped working and wouldn’t go to the next scene. This is kinda normal these days, so I did my usual thing and tried to reboot the thing. It started to make this sound like the disc was spinning and stopping , like: Whiiiiiir- clank- whiiiir-clank over and over again until it stops spinning altogather. I kept getting the browser scene even though the disk was in there. I tried to boot another game and it did the same thing, so it’s the PS2.

I really don’t want to get a new one, since there are a lot of things I want to get new of and most of them are over $150. :frowning: . For a 13 year old with no job, that’s a lot of money.

It sounds like a faulty laser. This is common is old, “fat” PS2s. Because it won’t play any games, It’s most likely it will have to be repaired. I do not know how much new lasers are, but it sounds liek that’s the prblem. One question: Did it damage the disk?

also, a trick with the old PS1s was to turn it upside down while playing.

PS2s are now $99 new. though you can get a refurb from Gamestop for $70

Does it play any other discs, PS1 games, Music CDs or DVDs?

If you have the skill/inclination, there are plenty of sites that show how to repair the PS2 yourself.

Mine isn’t an old “fat” one. It ain’t new either, though. I think I would date it too…I think I was in third grade when I got it…2004.

I’ll try the turning upside down thing, though. . That’s kinda funny. Wait, turning the PS2 upside down or the disk?

I don’t think the disc is harmed, from what I could tell. Though with my PS2 not working, I have no way to test it.

My PS2 stinks too. It’s the fatso kind, and I got it in 2001. It no longer reads PS1 games and its video output is REALLY low quality, almost unplayable. I’m thinking about getting a new one, but it’s not really in my budget at this time.

Actually if I recall it was turning the PS2 on it’s SIDE rather than upside down.

I had this problem with my big PS2, and it was being very picky of what DVDs and games (though I don’t think it had too much problem with the later) it wants to play. You can try going into the…ugh…check screen (The screen where you go to check your memory cards), and see what it says about the disc. If it goes black, try checking the disc.
You could also try using a laser test disc. There’s also a disc they use that has a very small-like brush attatched to it that is used for some computers to clean a laser through it’s scanning.

That’s so totally awesome!

Maybe I’ll try that. How expensive are they? And does anyone know how expensive it would be to repair it? I’m on a budget.

The reason I don’t want to buy a new one is because I want to get a PS3 or PSP someday, and don’t want my parents being like “But you just got a new PS2.” Also, does anyone know if a PSP plays PS2 games?

And is it just me, or is it that the newer the model, the less amount of time it takes for it to shut down? For example, my sister has had her I-pod mini for like, three years and it apparently keeps power really well. However, I’ve had my nano for a year and a few months and it loses power in about 5 days. What gives? Also, my cousin had his thin PS2 for a shorter amount of time I have had mine and apparently his broke down and he got a new one for Christmas. Is that their stragedy? Make the more expensive products break down after enough time to get you addicted but just in time for the new model to come out? It’s really annoying.

I’m not sure how expensive they are…I just have one and I didn’t buy it. I…don’t think they would be too expensive. Try google searching products, particularly E-Bay.
As for repairing it…since you said you got it in 2004 I believe…it’s probably not under warranty. Unsure of the cost, but I’m sure it’s not under $10…

To my knowledge PSPs don’t play the disc games (hence no PS1/2/3).

You know I don’t doubt that. Who here has brought something and it suspeciously breaks down AFTER the warranty has expired :unamused: I vote yes on a conspiracy of retailers selling stuff that inexpicatly gets whacked when it isn’t covered :unamused:

PS2 disks definitely don’t play on the PSP, but they make some of the same games for both systems. You’ll just have to pay for the game again.

Yeah PSP’s can’t play PS2 disks, only UMD’s. Although maybe you can get an emulator to plug into the PSP?

My PS2 is now somewhat dead as well, although it is one of the old, phat, ones. The disk tray won’t open at all when you hit the button, looks like the disk tray motor is wearing out. Means I can’t play FFXII anymore : (

the actual PS2

I mean, do they really think I’ll put a PS3 in my list of items just because my trusty old PS2 broke down…OK yeah I would, but still.

I looked up one of those laser cleaning disks, and it was about $7 . Hopefully if I get one it’ll work.

Especially, I hear, that there’s some concern about the backwards compatibility with the PS3 I think.

REALLY? Good for you ^^ Hope it works ^^

Hmm, I should have been in here sooner. What color is the disc that wasn’t loading? Clear or blue?

Ah yes I notice that too. It seems that blue discs (NOT blue-ray, I mean discs that have a blue underside) have trouble being read on PS2 types like that. I tried running Unreal Tournament and it kept saying I needed to insert a PS2 disc (even though it was for PS2).

I work at gamestop and we get calls from costumers all the time about the perfectly fine blue blacked disc just bought doesn’t work when they get it home. Basically, the more of one type you play, the more the system generally doesn’t want to play the other color. No one really knows why that’s the case though
I know my ps2 was pretty angry when I tried to play a blue disc.

Even though, black discs were originally meant as a copy protection method, and only PlayStations could read them.

Clear. I’ve played it many times before (It was Kingdom Hearts II).

I’ve never played my PS2 all that much until now, when I got KHI. I’m home and the TV is free and my game is so available…I REALLY WANT TO PLAY! I think I got addicted. I feel so empty…

Holy friggin crap.

I found a video on YouTube about how to clean your lense, and tried it.

IT FRIGGIN WORKED!

KHII is up and running.

Edited. I combined both of your posts. – Mitch

I knew I saw your sig before

Yeah I heard there was a process that you could do at home to clean the lense, but if I recall it was also a risky process, which is why I didn’t mention it.
