I know this is off-topic but I just want to mention that many people I know that are family and friends work for Disney. Although I don’t work there myself (They’re not hiring under 18-year-olds right now; I’m still dying about that inside. I’ve been wanting to work for Disney for forever. ), I can tell you that Disney is not horrible to it’s park cast members. Their supervisors are outstandingly nice, they give a nice pay, and I know not one person who works there and every day can’t wait to go to work. Disney doesn’t take advantage of their employees. Disney World is the largest single-site employer in the United States; if it treated it’s workers horribly- someone would know.
They’re actually the best employer around Central Florida and especially with minors, they take very good care of cast members with their company policies and the people in charge. Disney offers so many benefits for their employees also; like they offer their own insurance for their employees and their families- car, health, life, dental, medical, everything. Whenever people I know had to make schedule changes, they were always very nice about it, working with them the best they could. My cousin works in Tomorrowland and she’s told me that her manager always makes sure she does her schoolwork and gives her time to do it if needed; how many managers do that? Most people that I know that work at Disney have been with them for a long time like 20 to 54 years.
And I’m rambling… My point is is that Disney is very fair and encouraging to their workers and I don’t know if you’ve ever worked there before or where you got that notion but I thought I should mention what I know.
The people you know are pretty lucky then in my book and have excellent supervisors. And perhaps certain parts of the park are different. But apparently in general the park fires people incredibly easily over minor transgressions and pay minimum wage for many many jobs- which isn’t really a lot to live on in America because well, it’s not the same as having a living wage. I keep hearing horrible, horrible stories of parks from people who’ve worked there, abuse cases swept under the rug and that sort of thing simply because of the idea of bad press.
Also in the case of part-time workers, they apparently do not receive health care benefits etc, because it’s just not the policy to have to give them it, even when many of them desperately need it- and it’s generally a policy to hire more part-time workers than full time since obviously they cost less money as a result. However a lot of people are trying to support families on that but without health and the fact America doesn’t have free health care that’s pretty much a disaster for many families. Hotel worker treatment is pretty bad (though I guess that’s not technically in the park, though I’m not sure), but then most hotel workers in general in America are badly treated. It IS taking advantage however and not really an excuse.
Disneyland Paris is apparently pretty bad too, and is thought to be to have been a factor in three suicides of cast members. It may have been stated in the newspaper ‘The Daily Mail’ But still- This is not to be taken lightly. It also has had issues with its treatment of muslim women. Unions in France are incredibly unhappy at the Paris resort and how they treat their workers.
Perhaps the people you know are lucky and the people I hear from are just unlucky but in any case I’m still not comfortable at all going to their parks unless I’m 100% sure the person smiling at me isn’t being taken advantage of. -shrugs-
Back on topic: So in any case I hope to write a letter at some point this week or next week based on the factory work issues. Though I’m not really sure who to send it to in terms of Pixar (to bring it to their attention in any case) or Disney and the other companies. Anyone else want to have a try or know who to send it to in terms of specific addresses?
