I forgot when gaining a bigger audience became a bad thing.
I just couldn’t post in the morning, but some reviews about the first 26 minutes of the film are up
the critics seem to be very positive and promising:
SPOILER Alert…
Please don’t shout or post words in a big font - TDIT
Didn’t I tell you?
YES, you did
Bryanbmp: Wow, thanks for all those reviews! Larry the Cable Guy is very funny. I’m glad to hear that it’s getting positive reviews!
Me too. I must admit I was worried.
But these good reviews, even if they’re just from the film’s opening, lift my hopes. And also about Pirates of the Caribbean!
It’s not so much the gaining of a bigger audience that I’m nitpicking, but the way the means by which they do it. If Pixar releases an official music video (like they did with the first Cars) or new posters (which are not simple ‘touch-ups’ of previous ones, like what they’re doing with the ‘shining globe’ series now) every so often, that’s understandable. You gotta build the buzz and as I’ve said in my Rio trailer dub, “Pre-Release Hype”.
But drip-feeding with a new character update every two days (and of which these characters will be insignificant or largely ‘wink, wink, nudge, nudge’ cameos) is the same thing as bumping a thread unnecessarily IMHO. I’m not saying that this is a wrong marketing strategy- it is in fact, a brilliant one, because one of the smartest tactics is to repeat a message frequently, but in different ways (“Cars 2 will be awesome - here’s a Brazilian character”, “Cars 2 will be awesome - here’s a French character”, etc.).
This is more of my personal gripe. Pixar was always self-assured and centered with its films; back in the day, they would only release a trailer or two and maybe a couple of posters. But it seems they are ‘bumping’ the film into the public consciousness, as if they fear we might forget about their movie in the plethora of summer movie options coming out. Just because other films or studios are doing the ‘bumping’ strategy, doesn’t mean that Pixar has to sink to their level.
Pixar always holds its cards close to its heart, so I’m rather surprised they’re not only showing their Ace (Finn McMissile), King (McQueen), Queen (Holly) and Jack (Mater), but their ‘rags’ as well (Acer, Grem, this sports announcer, that participant from a fictional country, etc.). HTTYD didn’t do that with its marketing campaign (Oh look, here’s our new character for the day, Spitelout Snotlout, you know, Snotface’s dad). Neither did Despicable Me. Or Tangled. Or LOTG. Or Rango. There were hardly any character updates, images, turntables, or featurettes, because they trusted the audience to discover and fall for them by themselves and to keep it a surprise.
I remember one of the Pixarians said making their movies is like having a surprise birthday party for someone. You can reveal a bit, but keep most of it a secret. Think it was Lasseter. Or was it Docter?
You can of course, go on a ‘marketing embargo’ to avoid spoilers. But I think Pixar should have more confidence that their fans will love their movie without going on a ‘bumping’ spree.
…
Anyway, thanks for the pre-screening quotes, bryanbmp. Very positive reviews here, I’m sure this is great news for all of us who are looking forward to the film here!
I was a bit worried when /film said that they were “bored by the preview footage”, but it’s good to hear the reaction is mostly positive.
I strongly disagree, no offence. In fact, I wish they did this more.
Heh, it looks like things are going to be turning around soon for the haters. I’m sure there will be a few who is too stubborn though. In fact, I know there will be. Their loss.
I’m so glad it’s going great!
It was Glenn McQueen, an old Pixar animator that they had a tribute for on the Finding Nemo DVD.
ha ya i knew that was gonna be the beginning scene with mcmissile in action. I really can not wait to hear the music in that scene!!! its gonna be so intense…
I hope it sounds exactly like James Bond with slight changes in the music. I definitely wouldn’t mind if the music is a total parody!
As I’ve said in the Cars 2 soundtrack thread, that’s a pretty tall order. But with Mikey’s G work on The Incredibles and Mission Impossible 3, I’m sure he’ll deliver!
Anyway, while we’re on the topic, allow me to make a prediction:
There will be a James-Bond style opening title sequence. Allow me to paint it for you:
We begin with darkness, just like the first movie. I doubt Pixar will blatantly copy J.B. and have Finn enter from stage-left in a series of dots and shoot the screen and all that (that is the infamous ‘gun-barrel sequence’ BTW). Instead, Disney/Pixar’s name will slowly materialise. We will probably hear someone’s voice, again, like the first movie. Probably Finn or the tugboat.
We fade-in to the camera sweeping over waves, before we pan up to the boat breaching the crest of a wave. Probably with some nice Mikey G instrumentals, something to the effect of what they used in the trailer (although those weren’t his, but from this guy). Anyway, we move on to the pre-title action sequence. After Finn makes his spectacular escape from the villains barely with his life and Prof Z’s rig in ruins, we iris-out to the title sequence, to the blare of french horns or violins.
We launch into the title sequence to the soaring music of the theme song, probably by a famous artist (again, like J.B.). The first movie also opened in a similar fashion with Sheryl Crow’s ‘Real Gone’. The title will appear incorporated in the scene (like the first movie did with the title on the tarmac). Maybe an overhead shot of Finn surfing over the waves to safety, and his wake disturbing the water’s surface and revealing the title in the depths. And then the screen dissolves into some abstract-surrealist world, with Finn as a silhouette doing cool stuff like rappelling or bootleg turns, against a backdrop of burning flames or ‘oil blooms’ (you know, when you dissolve detergent into water and it forms a cloud?).
Mater then enters midway and does some silly shennanigans, with an exasperated Lightning close behind. We see close-ups of Holly’s stunning curves, which melt into a race-track corner through some artistic transitions. Now we come to the end of the song, and we see Finn approaching in the distance. The final chords rise in suspense, the last chorus line echoes, and Finn pulls to a stop as he runs right into the camera and turns the screen dark again, before we iris-out on Radiator Springs.
To get an idea, I’m imagining it as a combination of ‘The World is Not Enough’ and ‘Casino Royale’, two of my favourite James Bond opening title credits of all-time.
If Pixar does something along the lines of my speculation, I would be ever so happy. This is too good an opportunity to miss, and they can do the title sequence like Monsters Inc. with some beautiful graphic design. What do you guys think? Would Pixar open in the movie in such a way, or do you have other ideas?
Larry the Cable Guy Interview
read what he said, I was a little bit surprised with the end of the interview, just check it out:
I already know one part I’m going to bawl over.
Which part? Let me guess, the Doc tribute?
@TDIT, your idea sounds like a lot of fun but only if the intention is to make a James Bond parody though. Since Pixar won’t want to start off by giving the wrong vibe (Lasseter said this is NOT a parody of the spy move, but IS a spy movie), I’m pretty sure there will be no obvious, straight-at-your-face kind of J.B. tribute. It will be subtle, if any.
But I can totally see them moving that whole James-Bond-inspired theme to the end credits, though. After the movie is over and audience knows for sure that the storyline/style is original, there’s no harm in throwing fun parodies at the end, just like they did with the drive-in theatre (hehe) sequence during the first Cars’ credit. Now that would be incredibly awesome.
That’s exactly what I think. So no, even though a title sequences sounds fun, it would be too much of a parody, and a total departure from the original movie.
Besides, Pixar movies don’t use opening credits any more, so what would be the title sequence feature? Just the silhouettes? In the James Bond sequences, there are actual credits in there. If not, they would be a little pointless.
Good points. Well, all I can say is that the first movie had title credits with Sheryl Crow’s song playing over it, and so did Monsters Inc. So I think they can expand on that idea and do, not necessarily a parody, but a tribute to the James Bond opening sequence. I for one, would think it would be brilliant if they did that. It’s not so much a pop-culture reference like they’ve done in Toy Story 3 with the 80s music, but more of a trope or genre convention.
Airplane, for example, relies more on timeless tropes or genre cliches to highlight their humour value. Movies like Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, etc. rely on timely references that get dated a few years later.
So if Cars 2 did something like a JB opening sequence, but made it their own, I would be very happy. And as I’ve said, they can make an excitingly dangerous and forbidding one like the JB examples I gave. Doesn’t have to have Mater falling all over the place or an outright spoof like this one.
No, it doesn’t. It’s just the race, “Walt Disney Presents” “A Pixar Animation Studios Films” and then the title of the movie.
The same with this one. The only Pixar movie with opening credits is Toy Story.
