I will!! Oh believe me I will. xD

I see what you mean. In that Mater really likes Holley, but at first she doesn’t like him.

Not the mention the rusty vs. shiny, low-tech vs. hi-tech dynamic going on as well. Oh God, if Pixar goes down this well-worn route, it’s gonna suck!

I really like the Mater and Holley vibe they’re hinting at… it reminds me of Agent 99 and Maxwell Smart’s relationship in Get Smart, a sort of mix of reluctant professional cooperation and flirty friendship which has potential. <3

I’m a a bit annoyed that Pixar is pulling a ‘fake scenario’ with their Germany and Russian posters. It’s like ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ posters of Athens and Rio when they weren’t featured in the movie, or those fake comic book covers where they show the protagonist in an imaginary scene which never actually takes place in the comic (I’m thinking of a few Frank Cho covers, but due to the family-friendly policy of this forum, I won’t mention them here).

At least the James Bond posters had the honesty to feature shots from actual locations that will be featured in the movie. Now I’m afraid there’s gonna be Russian and German fans going into theatres hoping to see Lightining in lederhosen or Mater trying vodka, only to be sorely disappointed.

I like WALL-E and I like EVE and as much as I think that Holley + Mater will be similar, I think like TDIT said it will also be like 99 and Smart, respectively. Actually, given that Holley has recently been promoted and is probably under a great deal of stress, I’m seeing a lot more Flik + Atta between them too.

Mostly, there are three ways to despite a romantic relationship on-screen:

1- They both like each other from the beginning, something else stands in their way.

2- They both despise each other in the beginning, then they both grow to like each other.

3- One of them likes the other, who is annoyed at that, then possibly grows to like the first (WALL·E’s case, and most likely Mater’s).

Evidently, they’ve all have been portrayed to death in movies. If they do it, it doesn’t mean they’re copying that from WALL·E, or that Pixar is relying on it too much.

After seeing those tropes being done to death in Rio, Shrek, Princess And The Frog, and pretty much any other romantic comedy I’m begging PIXAR not to do #2 or #2-2.

I’d rather see something more natural like an iniitial platonic relationship between the two of them, just as good acquaintances, who happen to get more involved with each other along the way. But admittedly, that will make for boring screen time.

Also, best Avatar + Signatures yet TDIT and Spirit of Adventure!

Thanks Pixar Builder!

Well, yeah, there’s only so many variations you can have on a romantic development. Unless you want to go the breakup route, which I heard was done well in ‘500 Days of Summer’, but obviously that would disappoint a lot of the Mater x Holley fans and Pixar has always been a romantic when it comes to its love stories. Unlike, say, Blue Sky did with Scrat and Scratte in Ice Age 3, which still could’ve been done nicely if Scratte was shown to be heartbroken by Scrat’s relenteless pursuit of the acorn or something, but the way they ended the relationship was so flippant after all that happened before that it just angered me instead of making me feel empathy.

It could end with Mater and Holley parting ways after they discover he is a secret agent, remaining good friends. Or there could be a ‘declaration of love’ and Holley might move with Mater to Radiator Springs as an American operative.

Either way, I’m very curious to see how this plays out. If it’s a ‘love at first fight’ plot, it’s not such a big deal, because it can be done well like in countless TV shows (Moonlighting, Bones) and movies (The Long Kiss Goodnight, Lethal Weapon 3, Princess and the Frog). Whether Pixar can milk the most emotional moments from this relationship like they did with Lightning and Sally, or whether it will end up being a flippant ‘Scrat x Scratte’ plot or a ‘Strangled by red string’ trope like HTTYD or Toy Story 3 remains to be seen.

I’m not really asking them to come up with off-the-wall romance story, because I get it, it’s darn hard to be original in that space. But what I hope is that they don’t rehash the exact same motif that was used only whooping 3 years ago. That story was cute, charming, and legendary. Using it again right away would be overkill though, and a strong sign of lack of originality, which is against everything Pixar is about.

I might be well overreacting though :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, as TDIT says, I think this will be another kind of one sided love, much more in the line of Get Smart: Incapable spy wannabe likes smart spy girl.

That makes sense…now that I think about it…I expect Mater and Holley to be like Buzz/Jessie…nothing serious just a bunch of flirting…

Pixar already has.

They’re not going to stay together at the end of the movie, unless one of them moves.

Oh. Can you elaborate that?

Wall-E.

Boy loves girl.
Girl hates boy.
Girl realizes she loves boy.
Yay.

Not that Cars is different.

Boy likes girl.
Girl hates boy.
Girl realizes she likes boy.
Yay.

No, she liked him, she just didn’t tell him.

Sorry to move the conversation away from relationships but any ideas on what the end credits might be like I was kind of hoping they’d follow up from PIXAR Cars films in the original and have some of the newer characters as vehicles

ie- Remy as a Smart Car, WALL-E as a Tractor, EVE as a Mercedes, Carl Frederickson’s box like body as a Scion, etc.

Unlikely I know since PIXAR hates doing the same thing twice but Hey, would make for some great merchandise!

Ehm… no. She realized he was OK midway thought the movie. She hated him at first.

I beg to differ, but if that’s your thoughts, so be it. And if so, then how come no one complains about Wall-E? Why does it have to be Cars 2 that sucks if it’ll be the same thing?

I hope they do the bloopers!

If Cars 2 does the same thing it won’t suck, just as WALL·E didn’t. There’s nothing wrong with portraying that kind of one sided relationship.

But I still can’t see how Sally was supposed to like McQueen at the beginning of the first movie, when he was nothing but a jerk. That she grows to like him is her character arch.

Yes, I want them to do that. I need to see the rest of the movies that weren’t portrayed on the first one.
