Hm, I may rent this one some time. Perhaps it’ll be better than I think it is.
A sequel is a terrible idea, I’m kind of disapointed at Chris Meladandri because his studio had lots of potential. The minions are officialy overrated now that there will be two short films featuring them!
ugh, really? I didn’t like them that much. One of the only reasons I liked them are because one of them is voiced by Jermaine Clement.
I think my reaction to the Minions is that they weren’t as much of a distraction/annoyance as I expected them to be (and there are some funny bits with them), but the story of Gru and the Girls is what made this movie for me. My favorite scenes are the [spoil]two bedtime story scenes - the kitten book, then the later one with the Unicorn Book (aww, the sweetness).[/spoil] Yeah, it’s predictable, but Heartwarming Charm goes a long way with me.
Did you know, they’re actually selling the “Sleepy Kittens” book as a movie tie-in? I’ve seen it online, but not in person yet.
(Edit: Hey, I just noticed that this was my 500th post!)
Congratulations on your 500th post, you’re now a Toy Collector!
And I really want that book!!!
[spoil]“This is literature???”[/spoil]
I want it! So worth $7.99
pixarfan9099, ZOMG, that’s so funny! I think if I saw that in the store, I’d probably go ahead and by it.
I actually saw this July 9, the day it came out, and I loved it! I honestly didn’t think it would be as good as it ended up being. It’s a great movie that has comedy and heart, and it’s really clever also. Plus those minions are just a crack up. Gotta love those minions!
I honestly think that this movie is right up there with How to Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3 as far as animated movies this year go.
Alright, I’m gonna see this one.
Tell meh, are there no fart jokes?
Oh, dear… actually, there is a big one (and it’s in a lot of the trailers I’ve seen).
OMG… now make them drink the milk! I’m gonna hunt that book down at my bookstores closer to the release date!
Is it the [spoil]‘dart gun’ misunderstanding[/spoil]? I thought that was pretty intelligent for a fart joke… but yeah, that was a bit… low.
I really think this a terrible case of bad marketing… I’m considering seeing this as a matinee or a rent.
Yep, I was referring to the [spoil]dart gun gag[/spoil] - which is actually pretty funny. Gru also mentions “fart” among the prohibited “annoying sounds” the girls are not supposed to make (another widely circulated clip), but I don’t recall any other such gags/references beyond that.
“Now make them drink the milk” is one of my favorite bits in the whole movie.
I would agree completely on the “bad marketing.” They’ve put so much focus on the Minions, who are just the “comic support,” when there are some really appealing characters and a sweet story at the heart of this.
I just saw this movie last Friday! I thought that it was really, really good. It was honestly one of the most original films I’ve seen!
Just one small thing I didn’t like that much about it: anyone feel like that this animated film was aimed more at little kids? I mean I know that we would all like to see the “animated = kids” stereotype broken, but I really did feel this way when I was watching Despicable Me. This is not necessarily a bad thing in itself, but you could tell that the filmmakers didn’t really trust the audience that well. They had to emphasize everything, like showing Gru doing all the wicked things to show that he really is despicable. I mean, even the shapes of the characters and the house were used to illustrate their behaviors and personalities. When I watch a film, I prefer things to be a little bit ambiguous, and I don’t like have the filmmakers force feeding me things just to make sure that I understand what’s going on. That’s all.
It’s funny you mention thatDing, my friend who I saw it with said “It was a great movie for children, but not for adults like us” I guess that we’re really spoiled by Pixar, Disney, and even Dreamworks were films are made that are generally enjoyed by both parents and children.

However, the point of a movie should be to reach to as many people as possible; meaning, a wide audience. If it only appeals to children, then it somewhat failed on an enjoyability level.
Why hasn’t Spill reviewed this yet? I always consult them before any and all film viewing.
I finally saw this today with my little sister. I liked it, but I was a bit let down. I didn’t laugh much, but I did think it was cute. Overall, I’d give it a 7 out of 10.
Not much in the film you haven’t seen more. You’ll laugh, yes, but this film isn’t really “spectacular” in any way. A forgettable, popcorny movie.
7/10
I thought the Miranda Cosgrove orphan was hot (assuming she’s at least 13)…which means I REALLY need a girlfriend.
And did anybody notice The Lorax on the shirt of that girl? The studio’s 2012 film is an adaption of The Lorax. Pixar isn’t the ONLY company that hides future film characters in their movies.
I just finished watching the movie in theaters a few minutes ago, and I must say, I’m surprised. I suppose it’s because I went in having very low expectations since the previews and the trailers didn’t exactly leave a good impression on me, but I’m not kidding when I say it was probably the only non-Pixar movie that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I’m going to go ahead and give this movie a 7.5/10. I felt like there were a few times that it was lacking in the plot and the storytelling department, not to mention it was kind of hard for me to sympathize or relate to any of the characters. Gru was awesome, don’t get me wrong, but I felt like maybe the film could have given him a lot more depth on his character so that the audience could relate to him on an emotional level.
But even with the flaws that it had, I really did like it. And despite the two potty jokes, it had a few heartfelt scenes that I even choked up over, like how [spoil]Gru had to say goodbye to the girls[/spoil] and also how he [spoil]learned to love and care for the girls as though they were his own children. After watching the movie, it felt like it was more of a movie about relationships than the whole “super cool Villiany”-stuff. At least, that’s what it felt like to me. It has less to do with that, and more to do with Gru’s bond with Margo, Edith and Agnes.[/spoil] And that’s actually the main reason why it surprised me a lot. But it was great, and I’m happy to say that it was a very cute movie and I enjoyed it.
And I’m also extremely pleased to say that the minions didn’t annoy me as I thought they would. XD
This is late, but, i just need to say that what gets me really mad is that all my friends liked this movie better than tS3. i liked it, cute movie, but no where near the lines of TS3 or HTTYD.
