I’m not sure if this is what she said, but I think my friend told me he made a rather tasteless joke about Robert Downey Jr.'s past drug issues (“Now there’s a face we’ve seen in every LA county jail…” I think it may have been). Now, even he jokes about his past, and a lot of times I find the jokes to be kind of guilty pleasures (like in the Iron Man Rifftrax), but onstage, in front of him and everyone else, when this is supposed to be a fun, exciting night for him? It makes this RDJ fangirl fume with the tastelessness of it.
I’m a fan of Ricky Gervais, but I agree that a lot of the jokes, well actually most of them, were in mean-humor. But I’m not that suprised really, like that’s his comedy in general. Put him in a room with a lot of Hollywood celeberties, and anyone would guess that would happen.
But he also hosted last year’s awards from what I’ve heard, and there wasn’t any issues there. Did he just get more bold this year?
Yes, he wasn’t like that last year. He actually prevented everyone about his evil plans. Shame on the organizers that let him do that.
Here’s an interesting article, Gervais says he’s just doing his job.

I don’t really blame him too much, I mean that is his type of humor. Golden Golbes should of realized that when they offered him the job.
I read somewhere that Gervais mentioned that he knows this will be his last chance to present at the Globes, since it’s his second go-around, so he’s going to pull out all the stops (something along those lines, I’m just paraphrasing him).
Personally, I enjoy having the 'p*ss" taken out of people (including Yours Truly). But there’s a very thin line between good-humoured ribbing and mean-spirited taunting, and sometimes, it can be very subjective.
