Exact Year of Ratattouille events

Renata’s letter says 2003? I don’t remember seeing that, and I have the widescreen DVD.

No, I didn’t mean that, I meant the letter was written in 2001, right (I’m not sure, so Im asking)? And Linguini had 2 years right? So that makes it 2003.

Gusteau’s will was written on June 23, 2001.

Give that two years and that’s June 23, 2003.

But Gusteau most likely didn’t die right after he wrote the will, right? That’s uncertain, but our next clue is Linguini’s calendar, which shows a September that begins on a Sunday, and the year after June 23, 2003, with a matching September is 2013, and that’s why I’m guessing September 2013, which isn’t that far away.

Whew. I’m exhausted.

It’s a cold case… we really don’t know, how about we stop speculating because this is turning into a conversation. So we’ll both have our opinions, but unless Brad or someone at Pixar confirms, they are both speculative.

hmmm. actually 2013 does seem far away…
but then it isn’t because not much can change in 6 years…
but what really made me confused was the typewriter, and the non-color sets.

Strange…

maybe the world went back to being more primitive in 3048 or something!..
not that likely tho

A typewriter is easier to use than Microsoft Word ANYDAY. xD

How do you know?

8D 8D 8D 8D 8D 8D 8D 8D 8D 8D

Uhm…sorry. LOL

I’m going to use logic for this.

I know…

  1. Microsoft Word is a pain. (to use and to learn)
  2. Computers are a pain only when they malfunction.
  3. All computers malfunction from time to time.
  4. All computers are a pain from time to time.
  5. A typewriter is easy to use and to learn.
  6. A typewriter does not try to correct your mistakes.
  7. Microsoft Notepad is easy to use.
:sunglasses: Microsoft Notepad is difficult to learn (when it comes to printing).
  8. A typewriter sounds cool.
  9. A computer does not sound cool.
  10. When used improperly, typewriters jam from time to time.
  11. Fixing a jam is a pain.
  12. Typewriters can be a pain when used improperly.
  13. Anton Ego is an expert.
  14. Anton Ego uses a typewriter instead of a computer.
  15. Anton Ego is not a poor man.
  16. Computers existed in and after June 23, 2001.
  17. Americans LOVE computers. <3
  18. Anton Ego is not an American.
  19. Computers are supposed to be easy.
  20. Typewriters are easy.

We can possibly conclude from many of these points that…

Anton Ego could have used a computer if he wanted to, but he chose a typewriter over a computer because it was easier to use than a computer.

What do you think?

A113- I don’t think it’s a case of it being easier generally. I think it’s more a case of the fact that Anton Ego is quite obviously not a young man, and I would generally expect people of his age to perhaps use typewriters over computers- I doubt Ego is that tech savvy, especially since a lot of the technology we use nowadays was not available when he was younger.

Anyway, this is Paris, France! Everything is old there.

yeah, but don’t you think it’s sort of odd that they all have non-color sets?!

i mean, it’s not that much money to buy a COLOR set!

Mabel didn’t seem to have much money, and we know that Alfredo didn’t have much money, but I really do find that interesting. I’ll see if K9Girl and I can come up with a theory for you. Great, you’ve taken away all my sleep! Thanks!

France is pretty advanced actually, and the reason I think the TV’s are in black and white is because the set designers wanted a stylized environment, and I guess black and white TV’s complement it, after all, it’s a movie!!!

Are you kidding? France is way advanced, and in many ways, more so than the states, technologically. At any rate, they’re definitely advanced enough to have color television sets.

You’re right, actually. We only have black and white TV over here. And we’re lucky enough to have sound. Two years ago, all our TV programs were silent.

By the way, I’m not talking to you from France, since they obviously don’t have computers. Each time I want to say something on the boards, I go to the United Kingdom ; then I come back to my castle.

How is France not as advanced as the US? If people use old things there, it’s only because they choose to do so, as in any other country in the world. My gran used to always watch her old black and white TV, because it was personal choice, and I think that’s why Ego uses a typewriter, even though computers are (obviously) available in France.

Hmm, yeah. I think we all agree that that was a pretty lame and ignorant comment by A113, saying that France is not ‘as advanced as the United States.’ And I think that maybe he should apologize, especially to Archibald.

Sheila

Not to fan the flames but I believe France to be considerably more “advanced” in many, many ways than the colonies…

Did we actually see any TVs besides Mabel’s (she’s old, could have bought the TV a long time ago), and Linguini’s (poor, B&W TV possibly free)?

I saw it as a stylistic choice, given than SECAM colour started in 1967 (on France 2 I think) and everyone agrees it’s after that.

Back on topic, I cannot seem to find any reason why the two sets were black and white instead of colour. I think you may be correct, Martin.

you know, after I think about it, it could be true that

  1. Mabel bought hers a long time ago (she does seem a bit far from “civilization”)
  2. Linguini didn’t have the money.

never mind.

2013 does seem okay…

but still a little far away…

I mean, wouldn’t color sets be REALLY cheap by then?

You know, you don’t have to judge when the movie takes place from the small details, I think Gusteau’s will is the only true evidence we have, the rest are just random props that aren’t always accurate.
