I’m currently working on a piano arrangement modification of Romantic Flight, in case anyone’s interested… There’s another version out there, but the person that wrote that has an insane range (huge hands ._.) and there’s an awful lot of sharp and flat keys involved. My version is the ‘simplified’ version, while it sounds nearly exactly the same!
I finally got around to seeing this movie… my friend and I saw it earlier tonight. My thoughts are below, from a short-review type thing I did…
“At last; Dreamworks makes an attempt at creating a good film… and succeeds! Past some of the predictable plot elements and a focus that’s more on the high-tech computer animation than actual character development, HTTYD delivers a highly enjoyable story that seems to have been missing from Dreamworks’ arsenal for years.”
tl;dr, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely not your typical Dreamworks fare.
What really won me over in this movie, though, was the score. Absolutely incredibly work by John Powell. This is probably fruitless wishing, but I really hope this gets a nod at the Oscars or Golden Globes for Best Score. So deserving of it.
You could ask the same thing about Pixar, at the moment.
You have to keep stockholders satisfied with stable franchises. Especially in economically challenging times like these, you have to come with a few movies you know will do well. If people liked the original, they’re going to want to see the sequel, 1+1=2.
And to be honest, this movie deserves a sequel (a good sequel). The same team will be working on it so I trust it will be at least enjoyable. And if not, it won’t make the original movie any less awesome, right? ^^ Whatever Dreamworks does with their new franchise, I will always keep loving this movie.
Besides Avatar, does HTTYD remind anyone of Ratatouille? [spoil]Kid who learns to defend a friendly member of a despised species (the latter whom happens to be adorable as well), with said kid gaining the respect of his peers with the help of his new animal buddy? And in the case of Remy, his challenging of his father’s obsolete thinking and paradigms about the ‘enemy’? Then the abandonment of the hero, before both sides have to work together to defeat a common villain at the end?[/spoil]
I think Dreamworks may have unconsciously taken a page from Pixar’s book on storytelling, if through accidental-subliminal-osmosis. But really, those story points are why I love both movies so much!
Wow, I never noticed that. It was a cute movie, and my sister(she’s obsessed with dinosaurs, dragons, etc.) will probably be receiving it for Christmas.
Took the words right out of my mouth. The similarities were more than obvious throughout the whole thing. Hiccup and Toothless’s relationship, the female love interest who’s fierce, the father-son problems… it’s all there.
Saw this about a month ago with some family and a friend.
I honestly was surprised by this movie. It’s better than the trailer.
I think it’s the best of Dreamworks since Shrek, and maybe a bit better than Shrek as well.
At first I thought Hiccup would be annoying, but hey, that’s what I thought about Ray and Charlotte from TPATF at first and I was wrong!
I also had thought that it would be the same old modernization, humanization overload. But it wasn’t. It was amazing. The teens were relatable enough. It wasn’t like the high school in Shrek the Third or anything. Also, I think having its own kind of music instead of borrowing pop/rock songs for a change helped limit the modernization so we could get into the setting beter. The story is great, too, it passed my test for what makes a great movie. Unpredictable twists, humor balanced with drama, interesting characters, dialougue balanced with action, and so on.
I love the ending, too, and how the repeated lines were useful but not annoying. I loved how it wasn’t that predictable after all, [spoil]how the main character isn’t completely fine and conquers unscarred as a hero. How Hiccup lost a foot but survived because of Toothless. And that shot where Toothless and Hiccup’s similarities are shown, with Toothless’s missing part of the tail and HIccup’s foot…it was a really sweet, necessary shot. [/spoil]
I just really really really hope that they don’t make any sequels to it like they did with their other hits Madagascar and Shrek. Because it already has the perfect ending, and to ruin this one, too would be just really pathetic.
I’ve got to say, Toothless is now one of my favorite animated pet sidekicks! Yup, along with Stitch, Morph, and Gurgi!
Well yeah, maybe a little, but to be very honest I actually didn’t think about those when I watched it. Come to think of it, Astrid does treat Hiccup the same way Colette treats Linguini, and Hiccup releasing Toothless…that scene was kinda like Linguini releasing Remy…wow I didn’t notice that til now! Well, at least Toothless didn’t cause an accidental kiss for them- now that would’ve been a ripoff.
And honestly, I don’t think they even had Ratatouille in mind while making this movie AT ALL. The similarities are purely coincidental. Also I don’t think the ‘daddy issues’ on the films are very similar. In the movie, Linguini doesn’t even have any issues with him at all, the only one having issues with him is Remy in his own mind, and he kept believing in Remy while Hiccup’s father even disowned him and gave up on him at some point in the movie.
Well guys, we’ve already had two HtTYD discussions in the chatroom, but it ended up attracting a few members who hadn’t seen the film since I was posting the session timings in the Chat-O-Rama thread, so TDIT instructed me to organize some more times right here in the HtTYD thread.
Hopefully I’m not intruding on any conversation here - if TDIT thinks we should make a separate thread for this, I’m sure as a mod he can go in and do that.
So here we go! We have a couple sessions throughout the week as it seems easier to organize meetings on weekdays. That way we’re not as likely to have random members wandering in thinking we’re having a weekend Chat-O-Rama session or something.
[i]*Session 1 (Sun June 13, 10:00 PM EST) has been removed completely as it seems to be a very hard time for everyone, including myself.
** Session 3 has been added in place of the session I removed. It will be around the same time, but please let me know if you’d prefer it to be earlier or later.[/i]
Now that the laptop’s working a bit better, I may be able to stay on longer, woo-hoo! (Unless my parents end up having a problem with me staying online late or I get too tired… either one is likely to happen. )
Hopefully those times work for everyone, let me know if you’d like a time changed around and I’ll see what I can do. I hope to see you all there!
Thanks for organising the chat timings, little_chef! I’m afraid Sunday’s time is not good as that’s when I’d be going out for lunch, and on Monday’s time (which is Tuesday morning here), I’m going out for a haircut and then to see a movie (gotta go about town to make my complimentary student hairstyling worthwhile! ).
So Wednesday (Thursday morning in Sydney) should be fine. Hopefully by then I would’ve finished my fanart and come up with more things to talk about this movie! If you want an earlier session, let us know.
