Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Well, no one has commented on the new trailers yet. I am so disappointed.

To any fan besides me, here’s the Russian poster! An IMDB forum user and the original site poster say it’s pretty terrible, but I think it’s okay, just underwhelming. It did get a chuckle out of me though…

Its pretty bad…i like the idea of Ice Age but 3 just reminds me of Shrek so much…blah!!

What’s so bad about it? The reason they’re smiling is because they’re glad to get rid of sid. :frowning:

Mama dino: Come on in, dinner will be ready soon!
Lame, TDIT. :stuck_out_tongue:
The Ice Age official website now has posted the new trailer as the site intro! If you haven’t seen it, here’s your chance to catch it in high quality!
There’s a new game on the site that was posted a week or two ago called Sid’s Egg Decorator, but they’ve redesigned it temporarily to be a Mother’s Day Edition and have added a new video intro to the game! It’s a montage of Sid’s first encounter with his ‘dino-kids’ and his attempts to raise them up. It’s pretty “Awww…”-inducing stuff, and a certain squirrel makes a cameo.

The Shapeshifter from IMDB has posted a link to a French description of one of our baddies in the flick!

Gulli.fr character bio

If you’re not a Francophone, the summary basically describes a [spoil]dino named Rudy as an “Albino Baryonynx” who is the most fearsome creature our heroes encounter in the mysterious world beneath the Earth. Rudy battled Buck a long time ago, and gouged Buck’s eye out. Buck in turn, took one of his teeth. Until today, these bitter adversaries keep pursuing each other to finish the fight they started a long time ago.
Sounds like we got a Moby-Dick/Ahab arch-enemies subplot here![/spoil]

Thanks for the info, TDIT. That subplot sounds really interesting. Neverending rivalry usually contains the funniest parts.

Yup, I totally agree BDD! Can’t wait to see who wins! Or whether both lose!

There’s a new game on the official site called ‘Sid’s Egg Scamble’. It’s pretty much an interesting side-scroller which has you controlling both the arrow pad and the mouse at the same time, which can get disorienting fast! The learning curve is pretty steep, I couldn’t get past the third level without using up all my three lives!

See if you can keep your balance by following the link below.

Sid’s Egg Scramble

It’s been a very long time since we have a dinosaur movie. I always tend to get excited when I found out a new movie featuring dinosaurs. I do hope that Ice Age 3 wouldn’t let me down.

You won’t believe how many dino movies are out now…
I was just telling my friends of the rash of prehistoric films this summer: Night at the Museum 2 (the T-rex exhibit), Land of the Lost, Year One, and of course, Ice Age 3. I bet archaelogists will have a field day this year… (Geddit? Field… as in excavation sites? Haha… lame.)

With three days to the release of Ice Age 3, it is about time some reviews from the advanced screenings come out! As much of a fan I am, I’m still quite surprised the critics gave it pretty rave reviews.

Ben McEachen of the Sunday Telegraph and online editor of Empire magazine gave it an incredible 4 stars out of 5, posing a daring question to the reader:
“When was the last time you were thoroughly entertained at the cinema? The answer will be simple once you have experienced this thrid Ice Age frolic in 3-D.”
Declaring that “it delivers just what you want from a sequel”, he admitted that “Blue Sky Studios is still not as well known as Pixar and Dreamworks”, but added that “this leading animation company confirms its big-boy status with its first 3-D flick,” and promised that it “virtually guarantees enjoyment for the whole family.”

Rob Lowing of the Sun Herald was less enthusiastic, calling it a “pleasant if unmemorable family movie” but conceded the “characters still charm.” He gave it an above average 7/10.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the rating has not yet been decided, but two noteworthy critics have given their verdicts so far. Louise Keller from Urban Cinefile says:
“The film has an appealing energy and is abundantly cute, although its target market may become restless and some of the sequences feel repetitive. For me, if you’ve seen one Ice Age you’ve seen them all.”

Joe Leydon gave a glowing report, claiming IA3 has “greater emphasis on action than its predecessors, and clever use of 3-D trickery to enhance storytelling as well as offer spectacle” and that the film “could prove the third time really is the charm by expanding an already sizable audience for a popular toon franchise.”

Apart from the minor quibbles, so far, so good. On a side note, I just saw a TV spot on Free-to-Air about an hour ago, and I’m very angry they spoiled [spoil]Manny and Ellie’s baby and Scrat and Scratte’s kiss.[/spoil] I’m just hoping I can forget what I just saw by the time I go into the theatres, but I can promise you, [spoil]Scrat and Scratte’s kiss is just as spectacular as Wall-E’s![/spoil] <3

yeah! I’m really gald that this got good reviews, I always get nervous when one of my favorite movies gets a sequel (unless it’s Pixar  ) and I’m happy that this one obviously is just as great as the other two.

Awesome woody, so I’ve got a fellow fan here, at least.

The official website has just gone through a major revamp in anticipation of its Wednesday’s release. There’s updated character bios for Buck, Mama and baby dinos (along with new ‘intro’ animation for the other characters, taking a leaf from the style of Carl and Co. from the Up site), as well as a couple of new games, pics, videos, wallpapers, and an alternative site background (click the Enter the Dino World tab at the top-right corner). Check it out at the link below.

Well, within the past day or two several ratings have appeared over there, altho extremely preliminary. Six out of 9 primary critics have given it a thumbs up: 67% tm rating. Also, remember that a week ago 300 theaters were given previews, with 90% attendance. That’s about 60,000 people plus, so what have they to say? Well, the RT community says 55% so far, which is ok, but certainly not impressive.

Scrat steals the show, but you already know that, lol. He is all over the trailers for this movie, and too bad we have already probably seen the best part, sigh. This masterpiece of characterization, matched only by Wall-E in the past 10 years, alone is worth the price of a ticket, umm a regular ticket, maybe not the 3-D ticket.

Any other sites with a buttload of reviews, Fandango? Edit: well, there are half a dozen over there and they range from good to glowing. One said the first one is still the best, another said the beginning dragged, another said that if you saw one and two, go see three, and the remainder were just overflowing with praise. The movie is apparently quite funny. The 3-D is used with the storyline. I am worried that the special effects and the humor have colored over the main event: is the storyline any good? Are the new and old characters done well with good development, or just cliche?

Ditto that, DarkHand. And now there’s gonna be two of em’ (+Scratte) this time! I hope I didn’t spoil myself by watching too many clips!

One good thing about the Ice Age series is that each of the characters have a personal demon that they have to overcome by the end of the movie. Some may take it as cliched and a little too straightforward, but I appreciate that the filmmakers tried to inject some personal drama and motivations into their characters. In the first I think it was Diego who had to learn to trust others, while Sid and Manny had to accept responsibility (it’s been a long time since I watched it).

In the second, Manny has to come to terms with bachelorhood and the possibility of being the last of his kind, Sid wants to gain respect and not be treated like the village idiot (although he probably is), while Diego has to face his phobia of water. Newcomer Ellie has to discover that the belief that she was a possum like her ‘brothers’ was a lie all along.

I’m guessing for the third is that [spoil]Manny will have Marlin-parental-anxiety-disorder from Finding Nemo while Ellie has to convince him otherwise, Sid is still trying to gain respect while raising a family, and Diego suffers from feeling inadequate as an ageing sabretooth. The older of the possum twins has to face competition from Buck as the one his ‘other half’ admires and looks up to, while Buck has to seek inner peace in his quest for vengeance against Rudy.[/spoil]

As for Scrat, for the first time in his life he has to chase something other than that darned acorn, and that fight between his lifelong obsession and the love of his life should be an interesting dynamic to watch for.

But in an acorn nutshell, I’ve read some reviews, and they say the plot and characterisations are better than the first and second, albeit a bit repetitive (of the reviews I’ve read so far). Another good point I heard is they toned down on the pre-pubescent humour from the second, although judging from the trailer and TV spots I’ve seen, more risque and adult jokes since to have taken their place.

Well, nothing’s gonna stop me from seeing it, though!

I’m looking forward to the Ice Age 3. I enjoyed the first two and plan on see Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 3D with my little cousin. It’s fun for me to see Blue Sky films because I personally know someone who works there. Plus, I have found their other films entertaining.

I am quite interested in how the plot will play out in this one, especially with Scrat and his new lady friend. Although he doesn’t directly affect the plot too much, he is a very memorable character; my favorite from Ice Age!

Oh my gosh, really, Hannahmation? Does he/she like working there?

Who doesn’t love the poor sucker? That squirrel should get his own film, man.

Scrat is very much like Wall-E. He goes out every day to get that one thing: the acorn, and he stashes them in the hollow of a tree. They fit in a pattern, kinda like how the cubes stack together. What a work ethic and quite a collector. He doesn’t say much of anything, his eyes and body movements are usually all that’s necessary. He is mostly alone and seems to operate independently from the rest of the world’s troubles. As for curiosity, a Wall-E hallmark, he did dig up that time machine in IA2, but mostly he has the one track mind. I wonder if Blue Sky will keep him along the one track mind or allow him to be more curious of the world around him.

Remember: the only part of the original Ice Age that was better than Scrat (There was something better than Scrat!?) was the sequence involving the cave paintings, a sequence perhaps better than anything Pixar ever came up with, until Wall-E. It’s 4 hours to go here before we find out whether anything approaches this in the new offering…

Much of Scrat’s design seems to stem from the success of Wile E. Coyote, the Warner Brothers masterpiece dating from 1948. (after an endless literal parade of loud mouths like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam and that big chicken). The coyote was speechless, devious, obsessive, and had a knack for falling from extremely high places. He mail ordered all manner of kits and items to achieve his goal. ( I wonder if Henry Winkler used this design with McGyver.)

Yup, there’s some shades of Wall-E in Scrat, I guess. I don’t think he’ll have any other motivation to explore the dino world for the new movie besides that acorn and his potential love interest… I just hope he attempts to woo Scratte Wall-E style at least. I can see how he was inspired by Wile E. Coyote too, he keeps ‘dying’, only to be resurrected again to continue his elusive pursuit of that acorn.

Well, it’s July 1st in Australia and the wait is over! Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is out! Run for your lives! As I’m typing at this very moment, the very first session is now playing at my local cinema (I checked the showtime). I’m gonna wait out till my friends ask me, otherwise I’ll see it cheap Tuesday next week, seeing I’ve already blown my allowance on that expensive IMAX screening of Transformers.

In the meantime, I’m watching the music video ad nauseaum. The song is very catchy, and I remember hearing that ‘Acka Lacka Boom Boom’ hook in a TV ad when I was a kid but never knowing what song it was, so to finally know the title has made me a happy man! It’s ‘Walk the Dinosaur’, by the way.

There’s also a new TV spot, but it has a few spoilers, so I advise against seeing it if you can wait.

And here’s a sweet Adoption PSA that will give you that warm and fuzzy feeling. <3

I might see it (depending on how you guys liked/hated it). I’m usually not impressed with Ice Age films, but this one seems different for some reason.

Perhaps it’s the different setting (I like the “eternal sunset”-colour scheme of the dino world), new characters (Buck, Rudy, Scratte) or the stakes are higher ([spoil]Sid has to care for three kids on his own, Manny and Ellie are about to become parents, Scrat has to choose between his acorn or the girl[/spoil]).

Which makes me wonder, assuming that the gang survives this movie, they would have gone through the Pleistocene (the last Ice Age), the Holocene (the end of the Ice Age by global warming) and the Jurassic (The Age of Reptiles, ie dinosaurs) Periods. If they ever did another sequel, I wonder what they will come up with next?
