So now it’s pretty much a fact that this movie will be more centered around Mater than in the first one. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Post your thoughts.
In my opinion, it’s a very good thing. I love Mater, he made Cars for me. Seeing more of him, especially after the excellent (and purposely cheesy) Cars Toons, would be awesome because I can tell that this character has a lot more fuel left in him.
“If you like the Mater shorts, I would call this a Mater-long.”
Haha, funny. Guess that wasn’t much, but the fact that he says that it’s going to have more Mater gives me a slightly uneasy feeling. I mean the Cars Toons shorts are amusing, but I’m sure some of us wouldn’t want the sequel to be too much like those. I’m just going to trust Pixar though that they know what they’re doing.
Um, hmm. That’s a difficult one. Though Mater is a very lovable character, he also doesn’t have much depth beyond the obvious really. And his brand of humour is quite specific so those who are not quite so keen on it aren’t going to have much of a chance to enjoy Cars 2. A personality like Mater’s works so well as a ‘best friend to the main character’, as in the original, but I’m finding it difficult to see him working as more of a lead.
Just to let you know that I’m going to move this thread into the Cars section of the boards, Elee-V.
I dunno. Its hard for me to base it on just what Larry says. Not that I think he’s lying, I would just need to know more about what he meant. Does it mean it’s going to feature Mater more, or will it be completely Mater-centric? I’m not sure I can see him as the main character. I was still under the impression that Lightning was and Mater was, at best, the co-star.
Hmm, very interesting. I did like Mater, and I’d love to see a bit more of him. I just hope the sequel isn’t all about him; I still want Lightning McQueen.
It’s nice to get an update like this on the film, though. Very exciting.
I love Mater, but I think too much Mater could be a bad thing. He’s very sweet and lovable in the movie, (lovable enough to make even the Cars haters love him,) but in “Cars Toons”, he seems a little more goofy; more goofy eventually turns to annoying. At least, that’s the way I see it.
I do think they’re putting a bit too much of an emphasis on Mater. He’s fine for the Cars Toons and stuff, but he’s not exactly a developed enough character to overshadow Lightning in Cars 2. Hopefully they’ll expand on him more so the audience has more sympathy for him instead of just being, for the most part, a comic relief.
Ha, that little kid is so funny! How did he get an interview with Larry the Cable Guy, he’s like 8 years old!
Anyway, I’ve always been a Larry fan, because my dad was, so I’ve loved watching his standup comedy. I liked his Paul Newman joke. I’m glad to hear that there’s more Mater in the second one!
I really, really want to enjoy Cars 2 but…usually, with a few exceptions, when a movie shifts the focus to the comedy relief sidekick, that’s when it jumps the shark. I like Mater, I guess, but he got annoying in Cars, and an entire movie about him? Not really my cup of tea.
I’ll do my best to stay positive though, which you must realize can be difficult for me on things like this.
Yeah, I actually partially agree with Rac_Rules. While I love Mater and I am totally fine with seeing a little bit more of him, I don’t want him to him to overtake Mcqueen and have the second movie focus all on him. I mean, there’s a reason why it’s called comic relief, and not comic dominance.
Well, we don’t know if it’s all centered around Mater.
Cars 1 had so much going on, a lot of characters. You had the Piston Cup characters and Radiator Springs characters. As far as we know, the bulk of Cars 2 is focusing more on a pair of characters (Mater and McQueen) as well as introducing a slew of new characters.
I doubt that it’s ALL going to be Mater and his shenanigans, it’s probably that he has more air time because of less main characters.
