Non-Disney classics

I liked the Pagemaster, and Land Before Time. THose are only two I can come up with at the moment.

LOL as I said Faily Odd New Yorker, I haven’t seen Swan Princess, but was surprised to see it called crazy

I don’t think Quest For Camelot bombed. True, it wasn’t the best ever, but you really cared about the character, the soundtrac in my opinion is great, and I really think the animation was good.

Oh, Fern Gully was my favourite animated film when I was younger! I loved the songs and the whole idea of it, and that crazy bat that had been experimented on! I need to buy it on DVD at some point and watch it again.

Corpse Bride is a instant classic in my book. The stop-motion animation was so beautifuly done, the colors, the design of the characters, everything.
My favorite character, by far, is Bonejangles. He’s basically an homage to Sammy Davis Jr. , and Danny Elfman did a wonderful job with his voice as well as singing “Remains of the Day” (Danny had intended it for a tougher voice, and they auditioned… 25, 26… 27 people… at least. Tim said in the end, “Would you mind singing it?” But it was really brutal. Every time Danny sang it, he was hoarse for the rest of the day) . It should’ve won the Oscar it was nominated for.

Phalkor: I just recalled why it’s crazy- for some reason it sent a jolt of unexplainable hyperness up my spine and I felt like I was buzzing through the entire thing. Maybe it’s because everything about it is so familiar to me, somewhere deep down in my soul.

Bill: I liked Corpse Bride but it was too short for me. And though you think it’s an instant classic- I didn’t grow up with it so it doesn’t feel to me as a classic … for me, classics are the things I grew up with and thought were the best things in the whole wide world because of my naiveness.

lizardgirl: Oo the DVD was awesome- I got it recently. They could’ve done with more features, but they had a music video of that dude who was the lizard singing “If I’m gonna eat somebody, it might as well be you.” xD That song is hysterical and addicting, lol!

None of you liked Balto? gasp

Haven’t seen it, mate…

And I partly agree with you, Fairly Odd, about how you define a classic. For instance, I have only seen Hunchback of Notre Dame once in my childhood, but a month ago I saw it again, remembering nothing but the fact that the hero is a hunchback :stuck_out_tongue:
And WOW! I did not grow up with it, and it stole my heart. So if you are just a LITTLE open minded or naive, you can enjoy more films and define them classics, in my opinion.
BTW, that is why I am very excited about Princess and the Frog and the fact Disney are going back to 2D. There wasn’t a classic film for too long.

(edited once for spellcheck :stuck_out_tongue:)

remy_must_save_henri: I love Balto, but I haven’t seen it in forever. I saw a bit of the sequel too, and although a lot of people liked it I didn’t. :stuck_out_tongue:

Phalkor: Ooo, I love Hunchback- actually going to watch it later to get some clips for a music video. I know that’s a disney classic but it’s one I love still despite the fact that it’s innuendo only occured to me when I got older. :d

I’m still a little naive and very open-minded- I usually look for the good in any film and accept it for what it is. I mean, if you don’t watch a movie with positive thoughts and the willingness to give it a chance, how can you enjoy it?

And I’m excited for the Princess and the Frog as well- I love 2D and it’s nice to hear they’re going back to it.

Balto 2, or Balto 3?

I’ve only seen The Pagemaster once, when I was really young… so I can’t remember the entire film… but I thought the idea of being transported to an animated world of stories from familiar books was the coolest idea, especially when a beautiful library was the portal. I liked the three talking books in the story, and there were some pretty funny scenes that I definitely remember enjoying, hehe.

remy_must_save_henri: There’s a 3?? :open_mouth: Well, if you say it’s good then it must be better than the second.

Aggie: Lol, I can recall one funny bit I always thought was funny, and still do- when his belt drops and he goes “Oo, I’m naked!” Not extremely funny but I always laughed at it.

Yes, imdb.com/title/tt0423849/

“All Dogs go to Heaven” is my personal favorite non-Disney film for many years. I just absolutely adore it, the graphics, the story, the characters are all wonderful. IMO, it was Don Bluth’s last great film before “Anastasia”.

My personal Non-Disney film is Anastasia. The looks were great and the songs, too. Although a few things would cause a historian to faint^^
Still it’s just wonderful… got to get the DVD.

Once I also liked The Swan Princess. It sure was nice but I think they could do that better. And I don’t really like the songs. I did oncevery much but not anymore.

Ahh, yeah. I was just going to mention Anastasia! I saw it a really, really long time ago when I was much, much younger. I recently saw the part of the movie with the song, “Once Upon a December” on my friend’s Myspace page, and it made me want to watch it again  I should rent it sometime.

So yeah, this is my list of some of my favorite nondisney classic animations (in order):

-The Land Before Time
-Balto
-Princess Mononoke
-Spirited Away
-the Iron Giant
-The Secret of NIMH

Have yet to see Anastasia/Ferngully…

The Iron Giant and The Prince of Egypt are the two classics that pop into my head (especially the latter) and yeah, the Swan Princess is pretty good too.

RMSH… I LOOOOOVE BALTO!!! That was like, my major phase back in '01/'02. But I honestly don’t think the sequels did it justice… Since when did Universal decide that the sequels HAD to have the characters singing all of the sudden? I know that doesn’t apply to much others film except Land Before Time. Although I LOVE both the original Balto and Land Before TIme, I’m a bit worried that Balto might end up getting 10 sequels and a cheap TV show. :open_mouth:

Some other movies I forgot to mention (actually I may have mentioned a few before…):

The Pagemaster
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Robots (ya gotta admit that one was fun  )
The Road to El Dorado
The Iron Giant

I actually watched Pagemaster a few days ago (for the first time in FOREVER). It was on YouTube. It’s funny how you watch a movie you knew as a kid for the first in a long time, and suddenly you understand hidden messages and jokes and such that totally flew over your head when you were young. 8D I loved Pagemaster though; especially since I’ve become a bit of a geek for classic literature.

The Pagemaster… that was my favorite together with Anastasia. It’s been so long since I watched the movie the last time. I have to watch this movie again

Like I said, it’s all right on YouTube - so we can reminisce.
