I did not like Mary and Max. I just thought it tried to be crude more than anything. It just came off as “too weird” and “too strange” for me. It seemed very ambitious for the filmmakers, but it really didn’t do much for me… It just came off as depressing for me.
I saw Fantastic Mr. Fox yesterday, and I think it’s safe to say it definitely should be nominated. I would be so upset if it does not get nominated. If it weren’t for Up coming out this year, I think Fantastic Mr. Fox would sure swipe that Oscar clean from all the other nominees.
Honestly, I don’t see why it shouldn’t be in the #2 slot. I thought it was really that good.
Movies like Coraline were great, but I don’t think they will have the best chance at getting in this Oscar season. 9 bombed both critically and financially, so I don’t think it stands a chance.
The only thing holding Fantastic Mr. Fox back is movies like The Princess and the Frog if it turns out more than just a return to traditional animation (Which turns out it is as it’s getting critical acclaim already).
I didn’t mean to list the films in some order of preference, I just had a slot I wasn’t sure on yet so I called it slot number 5. I haven’t seen Mr. Fox yet and can’t judge where it fits in that respect. ^^;
And while I know 9 didn’t do great, and maybe it’s just my own bias putting it in my prediction, I have to root for it getting a nom. I think it was underrated. While it could have been better in ways, it took risks and showed absolutely stunning artwork for the low budget it was on. I don’t think it deserves to WIN. The story was weak in places, for sure. I’d just like to see it up there.
I had an Oscar-related thought, and figured this was as good a thread as any in which to post it.
You know how the Oscars have gotten into the habit of having an animated character present a category each year? (Edna Mode presenting Best Costumes was classic! “You can turn off the teleprompter, darling, I know what I want to say.”) I think this year’s animated presenter should be DUG! Not only is he lovable, they won’t have to worry about the lip synch (the animated character always has to have his/her mouth covered or something when announcing the winner, since they can’t pre-animate them saying the winner’s name). With the talking collar, Dug can just smile and wag his tail.
Yay for Partly Cloudy getting a nomination, though I have to go with the consensus here and say that I’d love A Matter of Loaf and Death to actually win the Oscar.
And that’s a very good idea, karly05! I’d forgotten about the animated presenters from the past. Dug would be absolutely perfect for the 2010 Oscars, especially, as you said, about the whole lip syncing thing.
…I admittedly dunno who I want to win best animated feature anymore. xD;;; I still can’t believe I’m even saying that. I feel like a traitor or something. PatF kinda sorta swept me off my feet out of nowhere. In my perfect dream world, Up wins BP and PatF gets Best Animated. I’m not even trying to guess what is actually happening anymore.
…Well, maybe one last attempt at nom predictions.
Up
Mr. Fox
Coraline
Princess and the Frog.
Slot 5 I’m guessing Ponyo or 9, and hoping for the former. Yeah, 9 was kinda a selfish pipe dream. Attempting to break age ghetto or not, there were just better films this year. Or for all I know, we’ll get a foreign like Secret of Kells. Or Cloudy if the Golden Globes have a say in it.
I thought it was interesting that Cloudy/Meatballs got what I’m calling Ponyo’s spot on the Globes list. I still can’t see the Oscars not nominating Miyazaki, but I have to go with the other 4 as pretty certain locks by now.
Last Oscar predictions - I mean it, no more changing!:
Coraline
Fantastic Mr Fox
Ponyo
Princess & the Frog
Up
(It’s kind of starting to bug me that “Up in the Air” is getting so much Oscar buzz - JUST because I am going to be on the edge of my seat on Nomination Day waiting to hear the Best Pictures, and they’re going to say, “UP…in the Air,” and I’m going to have about one instant of being excited before I have to throw something at the TV. )
