I say submit your strongest work, no matter what subject it is (unless it’s something super extreme or obscene, which it doesn’t sound like). I don’t have Christian beliefs and that doesn’t make me that uncomfortable, although I haven’t read it.
I agree with q_o_p, mentalguru. As long as it’s not inflammatory, go ahead and consider it (if enough members agree that we should have non-Pixar fanwork categories, that is). Stories are retold and modernised all the time: Romeo+Juliet, Avatar, Tangled, etc. Perhaps if you’re feeling uncomfortable, you can submit to one of the Mods to veto in the meantime while we discuss about non-Pixar categories.
Basil, I believe we have an unprecedented amount of non-Pixar related fanworks this year, probably because of the release of better quality animated films that compete with Pixar as well as fans with diverse opinions. In fact, I have seen more alternative artwork posted here from people like little_chef, Badger, Danachii, SgtYapyap, etc. than Pixar-related ones. And of course, there’s those who do combined mash-ups like JustSoWalleCrazy, Pizza Planet Truck and me.
So based on my observations, it is my belief we will have a greater response if we included alternative categories that are non-Pixar related, than if we didn’t.
I suggest we can either:
a) Do away with the ‘Pixar only’ restriction and welcome non-Pixar related submissions, like we’ve done for Best Avatar and Best Signature.
b) Segregate ‘Pixar only’ and ‘Non-Pixar/Combined’ categories, though this might result in a few more categories to the already long list.
Personally, I don’t mind either approach, though I’m leaning towards b). We can cull the ‘Best Fan Commentary’ and perhaps combine ‘Best Artist - Traditional’ and ‘Best Artist - Other’ into just ‘Best Artist’ (since the medium - traditional or digital, is increasingly being combined nowadays).
Again, this is up for debate, and feedback is welcomed. Nothing’s final until next week.
The traditional vs digital thing is quite blurry, since someone can do a nice drawing by hand and then paint it in Photoshop, which essentially makes it a traditional/digital hybrid.
Perhaps instead there could be separate categories for “Best Artist–Fan Art” (non-Pixar or whatever) and “Best Artist – Original Work.” As I said before, I feel like people might be more attached to art based on characters they’re familiar with than something they haven’t seen before, and therefore they might get more recognition because a lot of people at PixarPlanet do fan art. This is NOT to say I’m dissing on fanart (I used to do a lot back in the day), but I do think they’re different genres.
I guess you guys are right and maybe I’m being a bit silly all the same, but it is kind of strange I’ll admit (Bible fanfic is fanfic you’re allowed to publish after all). I had six reviews, and four were christian and they were all positive so… I guess I might send in a link to a mod a little later.
Actually now I see you’re possibly right about the fact there’s so many different categories now with a quick glance at that forum (I unfortunatly haven’t been looking there much, should change that.) I think this will continue even if we’re lucky in that department. More excellent movies other companies! Dreamworks was also surprising this year with HTTYD and Megamind after all.
With Megamind more or less capturing my heart I’ll possibly be taken over by it for a little bit at least (so much so that in a few weeks if I’m still on this high I might have to make an addition to my list of fandom beverages in my signature), so if I submit anything for the 2011 awards it would quite possibly be from there so far. It was definitly a good movie- and the first one I viewed in 2011!
Announcement: The closing date for entries to be considered for ‘2010’s Awards’ is the closing date of the Nomination Period (16th January). So if you have any uncompleted works, or finished works that you haven’t posted on Pixar Planet, do so latest by the 16th of January so people can nominate you for the Awards! Take into account that people can already start nominating from this Monday onwards (10th January), so get on it!
I’ve just received the go-ahead that we include ‘Non-Pixar’ categories in this year’s Awards! Refer to the first post and the ‘FYC’ thread for more info.
Apologies for any inconvenience or confusion. On hindsight, I should have decided on the categories before opening the ‘FYC’ thread.
But hopefully this gives greater opportunity for wider entries, and a more diverse competition this year!
Again, if there’s anything you’re unsure about the Awards, or if you would like to provide feedback, don’t hesitate to PM either me or TSS, or write a post in this thread.
Last year I won the award ‘best signature’, which I was very surprised about because I didn’t even know at the time that this event was taking place. I was pretty much of a newbie and it filled my heart with joy to see someone took the effort to nominate me, and then even more people decided to vote on me… just wow. I don’t know how this all took place back then, because I couldn’t find the post that nominated me nor the voting threads… or anything, for that matter. But yeah, either way, thanks a bunch. It meant a lot to me, and still does.
Anyway, I haven’t done much this year to deserve any award. Heck, I even still have the same sig I had last year! But at least I now know of this event so I can nominate people and vote, because I feel kinda bad I didn’t return the favor last year.
So yeah, I can’t wait for it all to start.
This is random I guess, but I love your signature, Czarine!!
Ha! My feelings exactly. It’s like, whoo~ Won an award! Peace guys. See y’all next awards season.
Shame. I hope I can be much more active this year, is it possible that a non-mod could start that back up?
I don’t see why not, thewisecookiesheet.
I’ll be setting up the Nomination’s thread within the next 24 hours, so stay tuned!
I have a question? What about original fiction? Does it fall under non-Pixar fan work by default simply because there really isn’t enough to support a full on category?
Yes, I’m afraid so, aerostarmonk. Unless there are enough original fanfiction posted on the forum (of which I’m so far aware there isn’t, to my knowledge), there isn’t enough to warrant its own Category. Perhaps if you want to, you can appeal with evidence to either me or TSS?
It’s the same reason why ‘Best Video’ is an open category, there hasn’t been enough non-Pixar videos made and posted here this year to deserve a separate category.
TDIT, why can’t we nominate people out loud? And how does the thread work? Do we put it in spoilers, or what?
I’m confused. Do we nominate ourselves or do other people do it?
How do we nominate people. Do we PM you TDIT?
When do nominations start? This is getting confusing…
I join to the confusion club
Yeah, I’m lost too. Also, no one answered my question. Judging by all of the confused people, I think it’s safe to say no one knows?
Okay guys, for nominations you’ll be PMing TDIT (I’m pretty sure, more specifics on that in the ‘Noms’ thread).
You vote for others, not yourself
And it’s private voting so no one is persuaded by votes. Typically in anything you vote in, it’s private voting
Now, we just wait for TDIT to come along with more instructions
Do we nominate ourselves or do we have to be nominated by others?
