Pixar Planet Awards

I couldn’t fill out mine completely (I was in a rush!) but I sent mine anyway…I hope it still counts…
That’s what I get for waiting until the last minute to do it. :frowning:

If you didn’t fill it out completely, then it doesn’t qualify. Those are the rules.

And I probably turned it in too late anyway. I’m sorry I didn’t participate earlier. Oh, well, I’ll be on time next time.
I’ve learned my lesson- don’t wait until the last minute and rush.
I’m crossing my fingers for the ones I planned on voting for, though.

You are more than welcome to vote from the final nominees list, even if you didn’t end up nominating, so you can still make a difference once the finalists are announced. =)

how much time do I have?

Too late now nightwheel. Nominations are over now. Sorry.

darned, I got busy with other stuff today. And it came to mid a few times but then forgot

Don’t worry. You can still participate in the voting.

I know, but it’s not the same :frowning:

Oh rats! Looks like you guys had nomination sessions when I was away…sniff :frowning: Well, it’s better to get it started or we’ll never get it off the ground. At least I’ll have a chance to vote the nominees… Good luck folks!

I’ll definitely cast my vote! More info about that?

The nominees will be announced within the next few days, along with the rules for voting.

Great list of nominees, everybody!

I have two questions though:

  1. Were these all the nominations submitted by the members, or were they shortlisted from a larger list? If it was the latter, who did the shortlisting?

  2. What are the measures taken to ensure thestarswordsman and rachelcakes1985 don’t have a “conflict of interest” when they receive the voters’ ballots? Did they cast their final vote before opening the voting session? Are they ensured that they’re not allowed to see voters’ ballots?

Sorry if I sound nosey or untrusting, I’m just curious and want to enquire what steps are taken to make it a fair contest… I’m sure everyone is honest here.

Anyway, good job organising this event, TSS and Rachel!

I hope it’s okay to say here that I’ve cast my vote. I’ve taken the entire evening to go through all the nominees and their works (and discovered a few talents along the way), and I must say, I had some pretty tough decisions to make! Again, it’s a great range of nominations available, and it’s certainly difficult to pick the eventual winners! Good luck to everyone, and may the best person win!

The shortlist was made up of nominations submitted by members out of any member/art work that was eligible for each particular category. The top 5 nominations of a particular member/art work made it to the finals. In the cases of extreme ties, even if we tried to break them (see below) some categories had to be extended to seven or eight finalists.

Because of time constraints, and me actually having to organise the awards, I didn’t have time to submit my nominations until towards the end, but I had already pretty much made up my mind of who I was going to vote for in most categories. Because of the number (or lack thereof) of nominations, there were a lot of categories that were tied. With those categories, TSS let me know of which ones were tied, and I chose my favourite out of those two or three nominations in order to break the tie. So it was either me doing that or rolling a dice. Had I not seen which ones were likely to have made the final 5, I may have nominated something else, meaning that the tie wouldn’t have been broken, and it may have ended up being a four-way tie into which member/artwork would have made it into the final nominations list. Maybe that’s not what others would have done if they were running the awards, but there is no guidebook for these sorts of things, and we didn’t have any guidance from any other mods here. We also didn’t have the foresight into what we should do if there were any ties.

One of the reasons why I wanted to organise these awards with another person, was so I could have a sounding board for ideas, and also just extra help with problems. I also know that TSS is a pretty trustworthy member because he is a mod, and from me knowing him for a while. Plus having someone else organising this and counting noms/votes reduces the likelihood of corruption, in my opinion, than if I were to do this by myself. With the voting, we are counting the votes separately to make sure we get the correct winners for every category.

No problems. Neither TSS or I have run anything like this before, so we weren’t sure of what steps to take in terms of conflicts of interest. But we hope the way we have done it is the fairest way possible, and we believe we haven’t done anything that would jeopardise the integrity of the awards. We’re sure we have made mistakes, though, but we planned for this a lot, but no matter how much you plan, there is always something you don’t know will happen. Next year we may change different aspects of the awards (if we run it again.)

Hopefully this response has eased your concerns a bit.

Thanks for your lengthy explanation, rachel!

I managed to pinch my dad’s laptop, so I’m replying from my grandparents place in Penang. Regarding the second question, it was about the voting for the winners themselves, not the nominations stage. Since you and TSS are going to receive the ballots that will determine the final winners this week, how do you ensure that the voters’ decisions won’t affect your votes? I can assume you use the same measures as in the nomination stage (as well as not peeking at people’s ballots, I assume? ).

But again, I trust you all, and you both are doing a great job for something which has never been done on PP. I must commend you two for that. Anyway, I may come back the next time I borrow my dad’s laptop again, so I may appear from time to time throughout my Penang vacation this week.

I have already written out who I am voting for in a Notepad file. I’ve been receiving votes but haven’t added them up yet. So I don’t know who is likely to win any category yet, so it won’t influence my vote, no. I’ll add my votes to the tally before I add everyone else’s. Also, TSS and I will compare the winners after we have counted up the tallies separately, to make sure neither of us makes a mistake. I’m also open to the idea of counting the votes twice to make sure we have counted correctly, oh what fun that will be. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s good to know, then. I appreciate your honesty about the judging process, and again apologise if I come off as being a busybody. I’m just used to asking questions and I’m glad that you and TSS won’t be influenced by other’s votes (no one is incorruptible after all, but you can take measures to prevent that, which you guys certainly did). I would like to take the opportunity to once again wish everyone the best, and that irregardless of the outcome, you all did an amazing job making my life that much harder (in terms of deciding the winners in my ballot). Heheh. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the enthusiasm for this project, TDIT. No need to apologise. You just want to make sure the handling of the awards is fair, which I appreciate. Yes, I agree, it was hard to nominate/vote for me too, since there were so many deserving people I wanted to vote for.

I’d also like to say to anyone that hasn’t voted, please do. From what I’ve counted so far, some categories are very close. The more votes we have, the better representative the outcome will be in terms of who wins each category. And more members voting = less chance of there being any ties = less stress for me and TSS. Make your vote count, Pixar Planeteers!

If I were more active (and drew things besides Cars), I could have been nominated in the artwork section. Oh well, I don’t mind.

That doesn’t mean you can’t participate Pixel Candy. In fact, I am encouraging you to vote.
