Well, I’m happy that WALL-E won Best Animated Feature. Although I would’ve liked WALL-E to have had some recognition on the sound and music sides of things, I’m not surprised that Slumdog Millionaire had a lot of success. The soundtrack is very, very good and has a real impact on the film itself. But yeah, ‘Down to Earth’ should’ve won Best Song, though there’s not much we can do about it now.
Either way, congratulations to WALL-E and the people at Pixar for the Oscar!
Goll - when Slumdog Millionaire won Best Original Score, my eyes were on Thomas Newman. He looked so disappointed, and I really thought he would win too. This should have been his year - the WALL-E score was brilliant.
But the Best Animated Feature was no surprise - congrats Andrew for always staying a cut above the rest!
And for having the best acceptance speech of the evening too!
Never been particularly fond of the Oscars but congratulations to the Pixar team for best animated picture!
I’m surprised that Wall•e didn’t pick up ‘best sound’ (I forget the actual award title…) too seen as the film pretty much relied almost entirely on the sound, but the Oscars have always had something of a bias against animated films so maybe it’s not that surprising after all…
My mom came in to wake me up this morning and said, “Oh yeah… WALL•E got Best Animated Picture at the Oscars…” as if it were no big deal. I was like even though I kind of knew it was going to happen anyways. And yes - I would have liked to see Down To Earth win Best Song.
I didn’t watch the Oscars; never have. I wonder if there is any way to get a copy/video of Andrew Stanton’s acceptance speech…?
Congrats to Mr. Stanton and the Pixar team! And to Ben Burtt as well - even though his efforts were not “officially” recognized with an award.
Congrats to WALL-E. I was really happy that WALL-E won Best Animated Feature but what really made me happy is finding out that Andrew Stanton played Barnaby in his high school production of Hello Dolly! I was like" HEY, I PLAYED BARNABY TOO!!!"
Thanks for that link, E.S.! That joke Jack Black made at the beginning about betting on Pixar was brilliant, and I love the bit where WALL-E is watching the video, and the clip of Kung Fu Panda comes up and he’s like, “what’s this rubbish?”
Thank you so much, E.S.! I really enjoyed it. It made me want to cry… honestly. That must have been such an amazing night for Mr. Stanton. His face completely glowed as he was speaking. (And I liked the video they played before the announcement as well. Gee, I wonder who was going to win the Oscar for Best Animated Picture…? )
Did Stanton just snub Jack Black??!? (Just kidding, not trying to start any drama.) If I were Andrew I would have congratulated him on that funny little dig at Katzenberg.
Pixar winning Best Animated Feature and Andrew’s gracious acceptance speech.
Ed Catmull getting an award and/or recognition.
Michael Giacchino conducting.
…and the arrangement of “Define Dancing”.
The ‘Romance 2008’ segment heavily featuring (and ending on) WALL•E.
‘Animation 2008’ segment created by Pixar.
Like someone else said, the use of the “End Creditouilles” at the end of the broadcast, but in my Australian transmission it cut it off shortly afterwards, unfortunately.
Pixar getting 7 nominations this year, especially for Best Screenplay.
Oscar lowlights:
Hugh Jackman was a bit meh and his dance at the beginning was silly. Did anyone outside of the entertainment industry even find it amusing?
WALL•E snubbed so they could give indie film, Slumdog Millionaire practically every Oscar.
The so-so performance of “Down to Earth”/no Peter Gabriel singing.
Ben Burtt missing out on the 2 sound awards.
No Best Song win for Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman.
When WALL•E won BAF, the music played on stage wasn’t music from WALL•E! (I noticed that too, miafka! I thought Giacchino would have our back on this…)
Cheesy American commercials (sorry but they are.)
Probably what I’m most disappointed about is Ben Burtt not receiving one award. The first 1/3 of WALL•E is dialogue-free and if it weren’t for Ben’s excellent work in expressing both WALL•E and the story during that time it would have been a spectacular failure. The fact that viewers have said that the first part of the movie is jaw-dropping, despite the fact there is no dialogue, must mean something. I haven’t seen Slumdog Millionaire yet so can’t comment too much, but is the sound design for that movie really better than with WALL•E, really?! Just watch the behind-the-scenes of WALL•E and you’ll see how much Ben loves his work and really thinks about the sound design for his movies. Unfaaair.
But anyway, a BIG congratulations to Pixar for all your nominations and your win for Best Animated Feature! You’re still winners in our eyes.
I liked the Oscars. I just finished watching the parts I missed and I saw Andrew Stanton’s speech, which was cool. I also liked the montage of animated films and of action films, but I hated the part where they combined Down to Earth and the songs from Slumdog Millionaire. I really thought Wall-E should’ve won a few more awards But they played “Define Dancing” in the Jerry Lewis tribute!
My highlights are the same as Rachel, but I would add:
The ‘Action 2008’ segment for the car chases and The Hives "Tick Tick Boom’, one of my favourite songs from last year.
The ‘Comedy 2008’ montage for James Franco and Seth Rogen’s hilarious characters from Pineapple Express and their heckling of the movies (Especially Franco’s ‘creeping hand’ during the Milk kiss scene )
Like TSS said, the fact that Stanton played Barnaby in Hello Dolly revealed a lot about his influence in including that musical in his film!
Heath Ledger getting the Best Supporting Actor. Alan Arkin didn’t even pause before announcing! Expected, but no less touching.
Define Dancing played during the Jerry Lewis tribute. Now that was an unexpected surprise!
As for lowlights:
Rachel mentioned this, but I’ll say it again. I expected (and wanted) Slumdog to get Best Pic and maybe Film Editing just to prove a point and change the critics’ perspective on “foreign films” and their merits. But to practically sweep every other category when there were better nominees (like Best Sound Mixing and Best Original Song) screams of patronising and political-correctness.
-Wall-E not being the first animated film to get Best Original Screenplay. Look at all the other storylines of the other nominees, and think hard. Which is the most creative?
Mickey Rourke not only losing his dog (“A man’s only friend when he’s alone” in his own words), but the Best Actor Oscar to Sean Penn, who has won an Oscar before.
Best Visual Effects going to Button and not DK or Iron Man.
The Dark Knight (a ‘superhero comic book’ pic) and Wall-E (a ‘cartoon’ film) getting shafted for Best Pic in place of the mediocre (from what I’ve heard) and Oscar-bait (Nazi and the Holocaust again?), The Reader.
The horrible medley for Best Original Song. The Indian dancers waiting in the wings before and after Down To Earth just shows the Academy’s impatience and ‘rushing’ of an apparently ‘lesser-worth’ category, when they could have cut down on the dopey Jackman song-and-dance intro and ‘Past Oscar Winners’ (Do we have to do this every year?) montage.
From what I’ve heard, no new footage in the Up trailer ‘premiere’.
Folks on the Wall-E Forum are up in arms over the Sound and Song traversty, but I think (hopefully) I’m less biased. I HAVE seen Slumdog, by the way, and while I think it’s an above average movie, it should in no way be more creative than Ben Burt’s sound design in Wall-E. Give up one of the Sound awards to Slumdog or Dark Knight, but at least credit the other, or better yet, both, to Burtt. And I suspect Peter’s snub of the Academy was unforgivable, but we’ll never know whether it was because of that, or that they were rooting for Jai Ho from the beginning. And I’m disappointed about Screenplay, although I’m in no position to compare since I haven’t watched the other nominees.
Overall, an enjoyable evening (or morning in Singapore), but I tuned off after Best Original Song since I was resigned to Slumdog owning the competition already. Wished I had caught the End Creditouilles. They may have promised they were doing things differently this year (which they did in terms of delivery, to sometimes disastrous results), but their decisions remain as predictable and outdated as ever.
then click on the first line of Feb 22 2009 archives. Then go backwards to about the time of 6:05pm, or even earlier to see the Jen/Jack Black intro to Animation, it was a real treat!
I’ve refrained from posting much the past 2 days cuz I decided to just work and get out ‘the bacon’. I worked while watching the Oscars and missed a few things that I’m catching up on by reviewing online clips. Also, was switching over to the walleforum to catch the action there which was impossible to keep up with. More later.
YES. UGH. That was just embarrassing. Like, I almost feel bad commenting to people who haven’t seen WALL-E but saw the Oscars tha I feel DTE should have won, because then I have to justify that cruddy number. I’m sorry, Mr. Legend, but you’re not Peter Gabriel. Agreed, they should have cut back in other places. What was with the musical bit, anyway?
WEVE in the romance montage and ENDING it made me incredibly happy.
Oh, does anyone know if an ‘Oscars 2009’ dvd or such comes out on this? The Superbowl dvd just came out, so I’m sure this splended ceremony will be available too.
The MTV Movie Awards are allowing fans to pick the nominees this year, and in the “Best Movie” category it is one of the listed choices. But also of note is the ability to write-in any eligible movie for any category, including Best Kiss. To that end I’m trying to start a campaign to help get enough votes to at least get it a nomination:
I’ve sent out emails to several sites (including Pixar Planet and Pixar Blog), so hopefully this’ll be more than just a hopeless idea. With proper coordination fan campaigns have worked before, you just have to remember you have to do more than just fill out online petitions. MTV has given us all a way to really effect the nominees, so if you agree that WALL-E and EVE had the Best Kiss of the year, you can write it in without a problem!
Wall-E won at the annual Nebula awards on April 25th, that’s sci-fi. Somewhere there was an awards ceremony for science fiction movies, and Wall-E didn’t do well there. Was that a few months ago? Anyways, here is a link to explain what the Nebula’s did for our little friend. And go to 10:09 pm for the announcement and the online crowd’s reaction:
Also, Wall-e is up for a Hugo award. You can actually see a fairly complete list of awards at the wiki. I wonder if the walleforum.com people are behind this list:
And Wall-E is up for a few Saturn awards. I think this is the one award which upset a lot of our fans, since it was shut out of the Best Science Fiction Film category and even the Fantasy slot. Stanton is up for Best Director and Best Animated Feature here. As others have said, the actual science fiction content of the 6 nominated films isn’t very original or interesting. Jumper is my favorite for originality.
