Czarine: Well, I appreciate intelligent, thought-out jokes rather than puerille potty gags, but I can understand how it’s easier and more fun to appreciate toilet humour. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it gets me to chuckle, but the smarter ones entertain me more.
theoutsider1983: You might also be interested that Sergio Mendes is helping out with the score. He’s the god of bossa nova.
JustSteve: The determining factor for me is not how much money a film pours into the visual effects, but how much time, thought, and heart goes into each frame. That’s why I like films like Legend of the Guardians over Transformers 2, although each are visually-magnificent.
The site has gone through a revamp! A preview of the new Will.I.Am theme song plays in the background, some character bios, the trailer for the ‘Angry Birds/Rio’ game… you gotta love it.
Hmmm… interesting concept with the one-frame game, though like Bryko pointed out, it might give the wrong impression. Hopefully they’d post an online version so international viewers can give it a try (even if they can’t take part in the competition).
So I’ve just gone through the site. Just the character bios (which are really simple), a plot summary, and the second theatrical trailer. It is nice to hear the new theme by Will.I.Am, though… it’s quite catchy.
In case y’all haven’t watched it yet, here’s the Angry Birds/Rio trailer. I’m guessing other birds in the warehouse will be the ‘pigs’.
And here’s the Angry Bird/Rio press announcement. Nice to see Saldhana, Anne, George and Jamie showing their nice mugs, though I’m wondering where Jesse is… (probably attending awards shows for TSN?)
I dig bossa nova! I went to the Rio website, and all I can say is that I hope the William song will be played during the closing credits. I’m still a bit skeptical, but I’m warming up to the movie more.
One thing I like about this movie’s look is how unabashedly romanticized it is; not just in the vibrant and colorful portrayal of Brazil but also in how it makes a snow-covered Minnesota town seem almost as charming.
Rio can indeed be a beautiful place, but there’s also slums engulfed in a drug war, crime, danger, etc… Oh wait, there’s poachers featured in the movie. Never mind!
I would give massive props to Saldhana and Blue Sky if they do have the courage to at least hint of the flavelas (maybe a scene or two where Blu and Jewel hide out in one of the slum dweller’s home or something). You have to show the good and dark side of the city… as the locals say, there’s two worlds in Rio.
We already know there’s a samba duet from the TV spot. And we’ve seen the opening sequence. So that makes two. Who’s to say there won’t be more?
I’ve rewatched the TV spot a few times. If you pay attention to the very first shot of the birds flying out of an aircraft, it’s actually a very huge giveaway to what could be potentially the climax of the movie. And when you see this in light of Blu’s weakness, you then realise that is absolutely brilliant. I can’t wait to see this scene, as I’m guessing it will be the ‘do or die’ moment to Blu’s character arc.
Wow I can’t believe I didn’t see the Superbowl ad yet, especially considering I’m SUBRSCRIBED to their channel…
I got mixed feelings about it though. A reject that has a hidden talent for dancing… AGAIN? Happy Feet in Brazil? Ugh… Well, I guess the story can still be good, aside from it not being that original anymore. Actually, if it works I don’t care they did something similar before, but I just hope it will…
I also don’t like what they changed in the whole ‘flying… sort of’-clip. The entire thing is on YouTube (not the trailer) if you wanna see it. But oh well… I’m still definitely going to see this.
I don’t think it has a similar plot as Happy Feet Czarine, simply for the fact that it’s the exact inverse. Think about it.
Happy Feet has a remarkable outcast who everyone hates, and a talent that nobody appreciates, much like Po from Kung Fu Panda or Remy from Ratatouille. He is a progressive individual in a conservative community, and is banished from his colony (again, like Po and Remy) because he doesn’t ‘belong’. His journey will be to change the current status quo, and his actions will transform his world, based on his unique abilities.
Rio, on the other hand, has an average Joe who has lost a natural ability, and constantly denies it (“I can’t fly!”). This is very much in the vein of movies like The King’s Speech or A Beautiful Mind, where the ultimate conflict lies within, as opposed to an external enemy. He has also lost any connection to his homeland and, is a stranger in it, much like a ‘fish-out-of-water’ story but in reverse (since he has lived there before, once-upon-a-time). He is surrounded by supportive friends who are trying to help him in his quest, but ultimately, it’s up to him alone to confront his fears and rediscover his roots.
Personally, I enjoy stories which pits an individual against his greatest fears/impairments. For what is more challenging and immediate, than changing oneself?
…
And we’ve got a second website rehauling. A neat favicon of the beach ball from the teaser in your tab, some new scenery, the Superbowl TV spot, a more detailed plot synopsis, and character wallpapers!
And we have the name of Will.I.Am’s theme number, the strangely-titled ‘Hot Wings’. I’m really hoping for an official music video along the lines of Rascal Flatt’s “Life is a Highway” or Owl City’s “Take to the Sky”, where the singers interact in the film’s environment and scenes from the movie are shown. Fingers crossed!
Love how the ‘props’ in the background are constantly moving; gives the site a ‘perpetual motion’ vibe.
I think Blue Sky has done a great job on making the characters warm and congenial. I’m really pinning high hopes on this, especially with regards to the storyline, so hopefully Blue Sky doesn’t let me down like they did last time for Ice Age 3.
