A/N: This is (my take on) what was running through Woody’s mind during the incinerator scene.
Goodness, that tore my heart to pieces. I watched the movie for a second time tonight, and I’m still emotionally distraught from it. It was heartwrenching to see my childhood heroes go through that.
Anyways, after seeing the movie again, all my thoughts really began to cumulate. I started asking myself what Woody would’ve felt, andddd… here’s the result!
Reviews, critique and general comments are extremely welcomed.
and do ya think you could throw some merch in there while you’re at it?
Hehe. Thank you so much for reading; honestly, it means so much.
Woody knew it. He knew that very moment was the end for all of them. His awareness of that fact heightened as they continued to slide in the direction of the blazing flames, but he refused to accept it. Struggling as he attempted to pull both he and the group up, he slightly expected to hear similar movement and sounds of labor behind him. Upon hearing none of these, he questioned why no one else was following his actions. As he glanced down, he witnessed a scene that filled him with utmost emotional confusion: each had linked hands, facing the realization of their horrifying final outcome. “What are they doing!?” he incredulously asked himself. The group, who had always been known for their love and devotion to each other… they weren’t even making an effort to put a stop to this? The fiery pit that burned in front of them seemed to radiate even more deathly tones of red and orange, as if taunting them. Anger slowly filled him to the brim. After all they’d been through, there was no such reason for simply giving up, as they all seemed to believe was most beneficial at the moment.
Though his eyes were locked on the fire and heat engulfed him, memories briskly flooded Woody’s mind. Sure, he reminisced upon Buzz and Jessie’s advancing relationship- and, of course, he and Bo Peep’s. Everything they had been through… Woody shook his head in grief that it could all be coming to an end. He was on the brink of silent tears when Andy passed through his mind. He remembered everything; not one moment of the boy’s life had been more or less important than the other. Even now, though, the monumental feats Andy had accomplished throughout his seventeen years slipped Woody’s mind. The more diminutive and less pertinent moments of playtime and adventure overtook him, making his eyes glassy.
Once again, frustration and outrage saturated his mind with misunderstanding. How could they all do this Andy? Andy needed them. He needed them for this new level of adulthood. Whether or not it was necessary to abandon aspects of childhood, it wasn’t possible for him to neglect them any more than he had already. He would pull them out of a box one day and remember how much he loved them… wouldn’t he? Woody sighed in uncertainty, the tears releasing from his eyes by this point. He had to face it: things just weren’t like they were before. They never would be. It didn’t matter how many times Andy was there when the gang defeated the evil Dr. Porkchop and saved the day, nor did it matter that his childhood consisted solely of his playtime with them. He was rejecting that chapter of his life now, entering one filled with the wonderment of new sights and adventures. Their time was through. They had done what they were meant for, and that was to be there when Andy needed them most in his life. It was all they could do.
Woody’s eyes met Buzz and Jessie’s as he took note of plastic dripping down their foreheads, torturously so. Something wasn’t right; amiss, even. The normally brave and valiant duo sat in the remains of the rest of the trash, their eyes piercing Woody with an emotion he failed to understand. Wordlessly, they all said their goodbyes- they knew that if they didn’t do such then, the chance would have fled from them. A feeling of anguish and heartache passed between the three; it was time. As Buzz had stated so strangely well, their mission with Andy was complete. Woody glanced over his family, hands linked and all. A sense of perfection washed over him. This is how it should be, he silently told himself. Once a family, always a family. Uncertainty saturated him far too quickly, though… was such a place as heaven attainable to them, or would they be relinquished in ashes, forgotten and abandoned? Would Andy be desperate to find them once more, to hold them as he previously did, or would his life continue on just the same without them? Woody shook any such thoughts from his head. Everyone was together, and would be from this point on. That was all that mattered.
As they slid even deeper into the incinerator, Woody could feel the heat from the blazing fire slowly fraying his vest. This was really it. He took a final look at his family. Feeling and witnessing the fear in the air, he took his chance. His hands gripped to Buzz and Jessie’s gave one last squeeze. He closed his eyes and silently said ‘so long’ to each of them, not forgetting Andy nor the moments they had blissfully shared together. Maybe this was what fate had intended. What would be more agonizing: sitting in the attic for years to come, not once seeing any sunlight… or leaving behind their legacy in peace? Andy would be clueless as to what had become of them. He could continue with his life, not having to worry about leaving them behind. Was that better than him enduring the remorse of never playing with them, not even holding them, when more demanding events arose?
A tremendous amount of additional tears began to spill out of Woody’s eyes. He had always been aware that such a day was coming, but never in all his years would he have imagined an ending of this sort. Whether or not the tears originated out of bitter sweetness, Woody would never be capable of comprehending. No matter what happened in the next few seconds, though, as the fire began to fray the end of Woody’s jeans; his love for his Andy and his family would always reach infinity… and beyond.
