SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act)

I didn’t hear about that^^.

Well, it looks like SOPA and PIPA are out of the picture… for now.

Lamar Smith’s gone ahead and backed another bill that will enforce mandatory surveillance on all computer users by logging every site they visit, every link they click and everything they search. It’s called H.R. 1981, aka PCIPA (Protect Children from Internet Pornographers Act) and uses the extremely transparent excuse of trying to stop paedophiles online to justify spying on every single person connected to the internet.

More ridiculous bills^^.

“But what about the CHILDREN!?”

…Seriously. Using people’s fear for “the children” to get anything done.

I know^^, very annoying.

I wish Disney would be smart and not support SOPA.

Well, yeah, and if people in Congress don’t support this new bill, Lamar Smith & co will be all “you support child pornography.” Which isn’t a reputation any politician wants.

Somebody get this guy out of office, please.

I find it hilarious that their retaliation to the Internet Blackout was to take out MegaUpload. I can just see the board room for the MPAA/RIAA/whatever company decided to pull the trigger…

Filthy rich CEO: Well, we lost some support after yesterday’s protests. We need to find a way to let the general public know that SOPA and PIPA will be beneficial for them, and that all these crazy claims those internet nerds are saying about our bills deing disasterous to the net are completely fake.
Slightly less filthy rich board member: I have an idea, how about we forcibly shut down the largest file hosting website on the internet with no warning whatsoever and no due processing!
Other filthy rich board members: Genius! What an idea! Why didn’t I think of that!

The way you wrote that is hilarious^^, but true.

What is Lamar became president?

It would be the end of the world. Seriously. I’ve heard about this guy’s ideas and the disgusting excuses he has for each of them. It is an insult to people who really do have issues to use them as pawns for your own underhanded schemes.

They ARE being smart. By supporting SOPA, they’re hoping it passes. And if it passes it’d be in Disney’s favor, money wise. It is a smart move for them.

Can’t agree more with you, e-j-e

I just read that SOPA has been shelved.

I read that too, that’s good even if it’s only for the moment.

Yeah, SOPA and PIPA were shelved, but I’m sure they’ll be back in some form. Like mold or cockroaches. You think you’ve got it all cleaned up, but it just keeps coming back.

All the Megaupload shutdown did was show how unnecessary SOPA is. Supporters insisted that the government needed more power to take down foreign sites, but it clearly is doing just fine. Apparently Megaupload was only loosely connected to the US- it was run in Hong Kong and New Zealand, and just its hosting was based in the US.

Thankfully, presidential candidates are scrutinized so heavily that someone with a record like Lamar’s would never survive. Plus, what demographic would even support Lamar? Liberal or conservative, we all like our free speech and Internet. Only politicians who receive financial support from these companies and their CEOs would care about him. And the majority of Americans do not fit into this category.

Sadly that is very true.

Smith and his toads will try something new at one point. The question is when.

If the US government managed to arrest a German living in New Zealand over a website hosted in Hong Kong without the need of an anti-piracy act, imagine what they could do with one.

That is a pretty scary thought^^.
