The only two things I was bothered me with Tangled was the climax and that Gothel could of been a bit better. I mean she wasn’t that bad but she could of been a bit better.
Well about the climax, I would probably change how Gothel is defeated. For Gothel herself, I would probably change her attitude a little bit. Just to a point where you just want to hate the character.
I agree. I didn’t like how it ends on a cliffhanger on whether or not they get married. It doesn’t that much of a difference since the new Tangled short will feature that.
I’m delayed in this conversation, but I’m going back to the Rapunzel’s dad thing- I don’t think she ever asked. Because when would it have even been explained to her that people have moms and dads? She’s never known a father or even seen a man. She only knows men as aggressive and dangerous. I really doubt Gothel had the “birds and the bees” talk with her because if Rapunzel stayed in her tower, it’d be completely unnecessary (unless you go by the original story where Rapunzel gets pregnant, but Gothel still wouldn’t have anticipated its necessity). Families also wouldn’t be mentioned in any of the books Rapunzel owned. So I don’t think the father thing would even have crossed her mind.
I want Rapunzel to be her name, because otherwise that throws a twist in how you think of her, but it would make sense for Gothel to change it. Gothel would want to take possession of her and claim her as her own. Plus she also wouldn’t want anyone to associate Rapunzel with the lost princess, and if she had the same unusual name, they’d put two and two together for sure. I guess we’ll never know.
Well obviously they had the birds and the bees talk, Rapunzel’s beyond puberty age in the movie. So maybe Gothel said she was the product of an old flame or a one night stand (I’m thinking Frollo!:D) It’s not that hard to grasp. In the ‘Mother Knows Best’ reprise, Gothel says, ‘trust me my dear, that’s how fast he’ll leave you’ and I think she might have had a pretty rocky love life back in the day, otherwise how could she have sung that with such intensity?? That line actually opened the character up to me and made me think deeper about Gothel.
Mayfly, we’re going to have to agree to disagree on whether or not Gothel had “the talk” with Rapunzel, but I really love your backstory for Gothel. It totally makes sense- her obsession with her youth and appearance, her distrust of men, all of it. And it fits with that line in the song. This is now canon in my head
