Robot is so cool! Thanks for the screencaps!
Had to check out this thread because I couldn’t remember a robot in the film, only in the game.
I hadn’t realized, but he does remind me a lot of WALL-E, 'cept his ‘feet’ are backwards to the way WALL-E’s are designed.
Well, maybe they have already created WALL-E when they started making Toy Story 1. Remember what John (I forgot how to spell his last name) said in the WALL-E teaser? That they were coming up with all sorts of ideas that they were goner use in the upcoming Pixar films after Toy Story 1? They got ideas for Monster Inc, Finding Nemo, and so forth, and one of’em was actually WALL-E. So, maybe the little robot already made his cameo?
You mean Andrew Stanton? I dont think the robot was meant to be a cameo of WALL-E but he does look kinda like him. Like WALL-E version 1.0 or something.
Yeah, im gonna agree with lennonlover, besides the robot had already been desiged before the legendary lunch. He was meant to be a funny miscellaneous toy for small gags, not a Waste Allocation Load Lifter.
LoL Nah, you got me wrong, I didn’t implicate that Robot be a cameo in Toy Story; it’s just a thought but, NvM.
And heh, yeah, Andrew… I never really remember the names of the lesser ones…[/jokes]
What I was trying to point out is that maybe Robot was based upon WALL-E to some extent. Maybe the crew was like, “Hey, why don’t we add in one of those robot toys.” And maybe then one of them spot one of those ideas they came up for the purpose I mentioned in my previous post in this topic, and maybe then, they came up with the design of Robot using minor aspects of WALL-E.
Of course, this possibly, like you implied, includes no intention of being a cameo of WALL-E.
And after Ratatouille came up, or heck, maybe after Cars, one of’em probably realized that they haven’t use the idea for WALL-E yet, the same idea that might have triggered them to build Robot as he looks in Toy Story 1. It’s kinda deep but… yeah.
Lenny the Binoculars? I thought we were talking about Robot. Well the design of WALL-E was inspired by binoculars, so I guess you’re kinda right, but the binoculars that inspired Stanton wasn’t Lenny, they where real life binoculars. By the way, as you may know, WALL-E wasn’t designed on the spot, so he has many other inspirations. Remember the TS characters where designed BEFORE the lunch, so WALL-E or his previous incarnation didn’t exist, at best Robot helped inspire WALL-E.
Note: Please don’t edit your posts to invalidate mine.
My bad! My mind’s kinda shut off, especially at 2:19 AM in the morning…
But yeah, his full name’s the Playskool “Rock’N Robot.” Sorry 'bout the mistake. =X
EDIT: Yeah, I was kinda pointing the whole theory towards Robot rather than Lenny, so that’s why I edited the post. Not trying to “invalidate” your post here, my bad. Never really notice Mr Binoculars over there, though, nor WALL-E’s large optics. Was that really based on Lenny the binoculars? That’s way far off from the Robot topic, me thinks.
lol
Maybe the producers will announce some day when walle “first” aired.
Thanks for the screenshots, nubetre, especially the cube-holding pose one. I never noticed that before.
BTW, I don’t see the robot in WALL-E.
Well, The concept for WALL-E has been there since 1994. And on 2003 on a baseball game, Andrew was handed a binoculars and adjusted it later realizing how many emotions it can give.
As for that robot, I dunno if it was just a coincidence or not.
I’m also amazed on how Andrew Stanton’s look has changed from Finding Nemo to WALL-E.
I read in an interview that Andrew Stanton did say that Wall-E’s eyes are reminiscent of Lenny (the toy binoculars from the original Toy Story) but that was after he got the idea from that game, which you just mentioned wasn’t until 2003. I guess the same could be said for the robot toy and the similarities it has, but since it was such a minor character it could be a coincidence. Andrew was really going for the Luxo Jr. feeling with Wall-E and not of Andy’s toys.
Robot actually said a lot more in the Toy Story Animated Storybook game that I’ve played. In the last part of the story during Christmas you would click on him and he’d imitate the robot from Lost in Space in front of the other toys. There’s also a game where you have to put him back on Andy’s shelf and he says “Robot thanks you!”.
