The WALL•E Movie Discussion Thread

In my opinion, this movie was amazing. The environmental message was excellent and certain plot points in the story were genuinely touching. If a movie about robots made me want to cry, then Pixar did a pretty great job.

[spoil]The character development was superb. I found “Desperate Eve” to be a great scene. That really showed how much her character developed from a stiff, lifeless (and destructive) robot to-- as Mitch mentioned— a compassionate individual.

My favorite character was the captain. He was one of the few humans (besides John and Mary) to realize that there is more to life that nobody would have guessed. Which leads me to my favorite line in the film: “I don’t want to survive; I want to live!” [/spoil] Genius

‘Desperate Eve’ is also one of my favorite parts. I was waiting in that scene for Wall-E to go ‘Ee-Vah,’ and then, nothing. It was like he was suffering from electronic alzheimers-that may sound cruel, but the way she was reacting like, ‘Wall-E, don’t you remember me?’ really got to me. Along with him just compacting his own stuff and running over his cockroach pet. Some laughed, but it really was sad to me.

Though I don’t think EVE was really that encumubered by her programming. In the beginning, she seems to be behaving like someone rather rigid, but once the ship is out of range, she begins to fly around. I felt that was her slightly rebelling from her ‘directive.’

Though I did wonder, after she confronts Wall-E after the tires scene, she says something electronically. Has anyone been able to figure it out? To me, it sounded almost like ‘who are you?’

The Captain also is a character I also liked-I saw his toy and thought ‘are we even supposed to like this guy?’ But the movie made him better than I could have imagined. He’s bored, and here was a chance to really do something. Plus, his little battle with Auto proved that the guy did have some brains (his little ‘holo-trick’ to get Otto to come to his quarters was great).[/spoil]

All I can say about WALL-E is wow. Wow. This is arguably their best picture yet. This movie is nothing short of perfection. The movie moves at the perfect pace, there are no plotholes, and the characters are so well developed. Pixar has pulled off a better romance with CGI pantomime robots than any romance film i’ve ever seen. The movie contains the same witty smart humor of any Pixar film, but also has a very emotional side. Watching EVE turn from a mindless destructive robot to a caring one was definately my favorite part of this movie. I wish I could explain the impact of this movie better, but it was so amazing, I was blown away when I walked out of the theater. Pixar has definately not let up, and i’m very excited to see how good Up! turns out to be.

WAAAHHHLLUUHHHEEEE!

My Pixar list:

  1. WALL-E
  2. Toy Story
  3. The Incredibles
    4.Toy Story 2
  4. Finding Nemo
  5. Ratatouille
  6. A Bug’s Life
  7. Monsters Inc
  8. Cars

I feel really bad about Cars on the bottom, because it was a fantastic movie, it’s just it was catered more towards the tikes and had more corny slapstick humor than other Pixar flicks. Yes I do think WALL-E is the best, no movie by Pixar has made me as satisfied as WALL-E.

I loved the movie, it really does deserve all of the praise it’s been recieving.

Eve’s character arc was one of the highlights for me, she was incredibly different than in all of the picture books I read xD And what surprised me is that even though I spoiled myself silly, I was engrossed in the movie and instead of thinking “Oh, this is supposed to happen now”, it was all brand new to me.

Now, when the movie finished, I left the theater completely silent and still teary eyed. I’m still not thinking straight, it’s made me ponder a lot of things even after seeing it twice. I know it’s just a movie, but I couldn’t help it  Did anyone kinda cry when Wall-E got crushed and then laugh when the 2001 theme came up? It was sad and then funny and I didn’t know what to do O_o (There were several instances like that, but a good example is the very beginning. You hear the song and then see all the trash, and grin or laugh or whatever because it’s such a cheery song. Then you see the satellites and trash and you think, “Dang…” and try to frown but the song just keeps playing.)

…WOW. OH MAN OH MAN OH MAN. I’m having trouble finding words, and I’ll probably have more after I go see it again, but here’s what I can get out.

Despite them being meant for purchase of a kid’s ticket, the nice box office man still gave me a watch. Thank goodness for my tiny hands. XD It was clear I was THE WALL-E geek. I was first in a line of about 20 or so (it grew more after we were allowed into the theater. Heck, they were selling concessions IN THE THEATER before the thing started. I mean, in the actual theater with the screen an the seats. I wore a WALL-E Tshirt ad WALL-E jibbits on my crocs and being all blah blah blah over the watch and the giant WALL-E cardboard model in the lobby. Yep, I was clearly the crazy Pixarian there.

It felt so great entering that theater. When WALL-E first came on screen, I felt like i was seeing a old friend again, or this was the movie of my favorite cartoon or something. Yet at the same time, I was just now really getting to know it.

It was more than I had ever hoped for, yet different that what I was expecting. But I still loved it to bits.

So below is my thoughts, as least what I can remember. It’s all a big wonderful blurr right now. I’m more composed than I was. I had trouble saying anything but “oh man” on the way home.

I know it’s tempting to some of those who have not seen it, but I beg you, get off this thread. Stay away from us who are talking about what happened in the movie. Do not ruin this movie for yourself. You will regret it.

[spoiler]Yes, the sudden remembrance was a bit magic corny, but I did not care. It was too beautiful to not do. I’m gonna go with Fett’s spark theory. That scene was so incredibly beautiful. I got really teary eyed. I didn’t go all out bawling, but this is the most I can recall ever crying at a feature film. EVER. I just don’t cry easy man. And then she started humming… and then she started humming… and man… The spark kiss thing is brilliant. I’m glad they figured out something for that. I know a kiss is not th end all of a good relationship, but it can still be an important thing when used here. Then WALL-E finally comes too and is all “EVA? O.o” like “OMIGOSH SHE’S HOLDING MY HAND WUT?” Dawww.

I liked the Captain. I could really understand how he felt. I too am a dreamer who wants more from life. He wants to stand from a sloth life but needs to learn how.

Despite my usual disdain for the idea of PIXAR doing anything live action, I liked how it was used here, even though it could be seen as a bit out of place.

The scene where EVE was playing the security camera from her time in stasis lock, and she starts to realize how much WALL-E cares for her, and then the memory of the scene from Hello Dolly! comes up and she does the exact same thing WALL-E had done with his hands before…That right there melted me into a puddle. I was expecting opposites attract and I’m glad I didn’t get it, instead getting more of a “people with more in common than you’d think” thing. I loved that scene.

And when WALL-E first shows up to EVE, and she does a double take… LAWL. She gets him in so much trouble, but she still cares about him.

HA. I KNEW IT. I KNEW AUTO WOULD BE THE BAD GUY. He just has this evil thing going for him so much. XD Well, is he evil? That’s debatable, but…same diff. I was right. XD

The repair ward scene made me chuckle. It’s kinda like when your parents think you need a psychiatrist and yo don’t, so you go in and answer the questions till they let you leave. Only this time, there’s guns involved. XD (no offence to those who do need one. You’re my people. XD)

All the opening stuff and the entering space got my animation geek nuts. I was all “…WOOOOWWWWW… 8D

M-O… I love M-O. That was the best comic relief I’ve ever seen. I laughed so hard. And then when WALL-E and EVE were having a moment and he shoos all the reject bots away and leaves himself. XDDDD That was the best.

The date thing, and the tetris thing, with EVE is stasis lock… hilarious, though it was almost creepy to me. Still, weird and hilarious. XD

EVE is now my favorite PIXAR character. I found myself often more focused on her than WALL-E. She is just such an interesting character, and she looks really cool to boot.

The Hello Dolly music was so fun and unique! All the adults started laughing the moment Put on your Sunday Clothes started playing.

The space scene. I love that. And she’s just so happy she kisses him, and he’s all frozen and lovestruck. The audience started APPLAUDING. XD I loved the audience. They rocked.

The credits were so cool. I loved the 8 bit thing. M-O kept making me giggle. And then, did anybody else stay till th very end and see the BNL logo? I laughed like a maniac.

SPORK. No more needs to be said there.

I’m so glad I’ve seen 2001 a Space Odyssey. The musical nods to it were brilliant.

The opening part where we zoom out and realize WALL-E is on an entire building of trash… that was one of the most powerful shots in th film. It was like… WOW…

While debatable (maybe it’s tied with the bit from when they got back to Earth and EVE was trying to fix WALL-E), I think my favorite scene was in the garbage disposal. The little exchange about directives…oh man. WALL-E needed to learn something too through all of this; sometimes the way to love somebody is to let them go. He gave her the plant and reminded her of her job, even if it took her away from him, even if he didn’t survive… And EVE’s reply… the “No, you’re my directive now.” thing… oh wow… That was heartfelt. That rocked out loud.

Oh, and A113!!! XD Couldn’t find Pizza Planet though.[/spoiler]

I had promised myself I would do this, and I did. At the ed of the movie, I stood and clapped in an attempt to get everybody cheering. It half worked. A lot of people didn’t follow, but that was okay. It was clear it was enjoyed, and honestly, a lot of people were probably too wowed to be that excited. I know I was having a hard time getting up and clapping.

Best PIXAR movie ever. Best animated movie ever. Best movie I’ve ever seen.

Okay, SO not going on this thread again until after I’ve seen the film in a couple of weeks. I just read a few spoilers, and they might’ve been minor but a spoiler is still a spoiler. I want to be a WALL-E virgin when I go and see it.

It’s a relief to hear how good it is, though. It seems as though both critically and in the eyes of the general public (as well as fanatic Pixar fans), WALL-E is Pixar right on form.

Yeah, uh, lizard, go. Don’t get yourself spoiled. The movie is too good for that. XD

In my opinion, I thought this was a brilliant film to watch! I have a thing for robots so this movie got me all hyped up!

Quite a collector, WALL-E is! He’s got such a snazzy room with lots human-made object! And his cockroach pet was cute, probably the only twinkie-loving roach I’ll ever love!

M-O was my favorite character! That little robot made me smile everytime he showed up, and I loved his determination to clean the endless trail of “Foreign Contaminant” WALL-E had left behind, which eventually lead to him to helped save WALL-E and EVE from being tossed away into space by getting caught in-between the doors. Pretty quick how M-O and WALL-E became good friends.

AUTO was really intimidating, but he looked so awesome. Kinda ashame that he couldn’t realize that Earth was recovering and that humans can begin life there again.

The reject bots were also my favs! I liked how some of them were playing tennis across the room and you can see some tennis balls that got stuck on the walls. And when WALL-E freed them, they were all like “FREEDOM!!!” and carried WALL-E around like a hero! I wished they had a little more screen time, though.

This movie had me wanting to tear up and make some fanart. There’s more I wanna say but a lot have been said! LOL Never been this in loved with a movie since Finding Nemo![/spoiler]

I just remembered. WALL-Ewas the first ever PIxar film for me where the only “video clip” i saw of is just the trailer and tv spots. I never viewed any previewed clips, saw any featurettes, or saw anyy production photos. I wanted to be completely neutral before I saw this film.

juuuuuuust saw Wall-E today, IT WAS AMAZING.

I can’t.

say much right now…goes to gain composure

Thought on the end of the movie: [spoil] I’ve heard many people in various places say the happy ending felt like a “cop out”, which confuses me. To me, a tragic ending would of felt much more like a “cop out”. It would have felt like " We spent this whole movie building a message about the power of love and connection, but here’s some SADNESS because sadness is ARTSY and DEEP, right?". It would have been shock over relevance. Whereas the actual ending was a great summation of the movie’s theme, that we can overcome even the bleakest of times just by reaching out and loving the person next to us. Love healed WALL-E just as it will heal humanity.

My two cents.[/spoil]

Love this movie. I noticed at the first few minutes I heard some kids behind me saying " I thought this movie was gonna be better than this" Prob from the choice of song in the beginning. SIGH kids. :unamused:

Anyways, I myself found I was confused as to what Wall-e was doing in first parts of the movie, but I worked it out…the movie is so brilliant and different you have to take a step back and pay attention. He’s not gonna talk through what he’s doing like everyone had gotten use to over the years.

What an amazing movie…I can say no more until I see it again I’m glad I didnt pass up a chance to see this.

[spoil]Did everyone notice when Wall-e first went into space there was an American flag in the BG not moving at all? Like the flag itself was stiff…wouldn’t it be like all droopy as it was hanging on the pole? It wasn’t blowing in the wind either so I was like  [/spoil]

[spoil]M-o is my favorite chachter by the way. I like when he was crossing his arms like MO! he was all mad hahahahaha[/spoil]

crostskates-[spoil]The flag that was actualy put on the moon during the lunar landing had a wire running through it to keep it stiff, as there is no wind on the moon. I thought it was great that Pixar included that little detail.[/spoil]

[spoil]I have to say if Pixar had gone the “not happy” endng route, that would have been very daring and would have completely ticked off the critics who love to criticize Pixar for not being “kiddy enough”, but it would have undermined the entire message and heart behind the movie. [/spoil]

By the way I absolutely loved the film and it prompted me to come join this forum. In my opinion this is the best Pixar film (I haven’t watched Toy Story/Bugs Life, though). I wrote a full review on my website → omohide.com/31/review-wall-e-by-pixar/

My only complaint is that

[spoil]I didn’t like the spark bringing back his memory part. I would have preferred if they had made the Hello Dolly thing bring him back,k or if EVE holding his hand had done so…after all that was one of the things that indicated that he had become more than just a machine, so it should have brought back his sentient side[/spoil]

Anyways,

[spoil]Tom Newmans’ score was BRILLIANT throughout the film. My favourite scene is when WALL-E and EVE are hovering around the ship while the Captain learns more and more about Earth. THe direction, art, music, everything during that scene was simply perfect…Pixar rules![/spoil]

To me this was the funniest part of the whole movie.

When Wall•E and Eve are dancing, after Wall•E dances, Eve tried to dance. And shes like: BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM all around in his truck thing. LOOOL!! Our theater was so loud and it was like shaking. I was laughing super loud and hard at the part. But like nobody in my theater was laughing.

Did anyone else thing that that part was funny?

Yeah that happened to me too…I don’t think many people “got” the joke…

I found an excellent post about the ending on (of all places) IMDB from a user named Javahound imdb.com/title/tt0910970/boa … 601821?p=2

[spoiler]I’m afraid I still don’t quite understand!

The first act of the film served two distinct purposes: 1) to exposit Wall-E’s solitude and 2) to exposit Wall-E’s “humanity”. In the second act the quest to overcome solitude turns into several other quests for the people he encounters to engage in new pursuits of humanity. In other words, as Wall-E pursues his true love, he witlessly helps others seek their own latent spirits. In the third act, of course, Wall-E gets his desire and so do the denizens of the appropriately named Axiom.

The ending of the film articulates the major themes of the film: hope (the plant, which enjoys its own “character” arc), ambition (starting a new life in “foreign” terrain for the sake of living), human spirit (the force that drives acts of otherwise irrational ambitions), and love (Wall-E gets his lady who reinvigorates him via the same, albeit now-literal, spark that he has bestowed upon others).

I’m looking at the math and it all adds up. I just don’t see how the ending doesn’t belong, or how it betrays any other part of the film. Yes, there are references to Chaplin, but not predominantly so. There are Keaton references, Kubrick references, and myriad more.

I understand that people wanted a melancholy film, but I don’t see how anything in this movie pointed toward that ending, or how that ending would substantiate the themes of this film. I want Romeo and Juliet to live happily ever after, but that’s not what that story is about either.[/spoiler]

Could someone explain to me what wall.E was doing in this part of the movie, I did not quite get it.

[spoiler]When the first storm approach and wall.E is on his truck ramp banging like crazy his lunch box on the ramp floor, he then look at the storm approaching and then he bangs even faster the lunch box on the floor!

Why his he banging his lunchbox for ?[/spoiler]

Animek [spoil] I think he was cleaning it out[/spoil][/spoil]

animek [spoil]Yeah, he’s cleaning it out. The novel confirms this too.[/spoil]
