The Weather Board

Other names for this thread I was considering were ‘Partly Cloudy’ and ‘Weather or Not’, but if anyone has better ideas, feel free to suggest! Anyway, yeah, self-explanatory, use this thread to talk about the weather or any freaky climate conditions you’ve been in!

The day before yesterday, I woke up in the middle of Mars. If anyone of you have been following the news, I’m sure you’d have a report or two of Sydney being covered in a red dust-storm. I was in the right in the thick of it! Well, not exactly, I was indoors and sort of woke up to my alarm (I dozed off on the couch) and noticed there was weird sunlight filtering through the window. I looked out the window and it was like Armageddon! Or at least a very hazy L.A. sunset. Whole sky was crimson, like blood-red, and the air was thick with fine dust. You could barely see the sun! It was so surreal.

Then I fell back asleep.

When I woke up to Snooze about an hour later, it was less red, but it was still orangey-ish. I don’t know why I didn’t snap any photos, musta been busy preparing for school or something, and I’m now kicking myself for it. But just search Sydney+dust storm on Google or something and you’d see how it looks like! It was like the end of the world!

Weather forecast say the dust cloud may return, so I hope I’m ready with my camera then!

Did any Sydneysiders or Brisban-ers encounter the ‘red menace’?

I did saw it on the news yesterday, I gotta say that Sydney does look like Mars.

Weather here is dry yet partly cloudy, wind blows semi-strong, great time to play kites. Ooh, I just love my hometown!

Whoah, that sounds awesome, TDIT. I would have loved to have seen that in person.

rachel, it is weird to hear someone talking about 111 degree days in January. I live in the US, and January means cold. I mean when people say December, January, and February, I think of cold and winter. Weird, how nature works isn’t it?

Oh yeah, I remember seeing that in the paper, thedriveintheatre! It looked pretty darn cool.

It’s sunny here at the moment, and has been for a couple of days. If anyone has visited England at this time of year, they’d know that this is pretty weird.

It’s finally beginning to look like fall where I live, and I will tell you right now that 70 degree F weather in New England this time of year is very unusual! But I’m loving it!!! I can actually roll the windows down in the car when I go uptown and not have to wear a jacket or sweater.

Everywhere there are colored leaves - it’s beautiful. I’ve heard that people from all around the world visit my state during the fall just to see the trees.

Today however, it is very drab out; kinda overcast and it looks like it might rain. Oh well… that’s more like our typical fall.

DocKenobi: Haha, when I think of January, I think of snowstorms, high snowbanks, icy roads, and -20 degree F temperatures. That’s why I absolutely hate winter. Some people love it, but I cringe at the mere thought of it returning…

little chef

Now is that mystical time of year when it’s like living with no atmosphere. Or like living in a desert. Because it’s still quite warm (sometimes hot) during the day but is getting to be kinda chilly at night

TDIT, Well I had to google it, but that dust storm is crazy. You can hardly see the sky.

:open_mouth: That’s crazy! Here in SoCal I think it’s insanely cold if it’s 45F. The only place I’ve ever seen snow was at Big Bear mountain.

Well here where I live, it’s currently 80F at 9:17 PM. It’s a lot worse in the middle of the day. The forecast for tomorrow is a high of 103F (Not nearly as bad as when I went to vegas, highs of 117F and barely any humidity). Should be cooling down on monday, though. :sunglasses:

Phileas was keeping us updated with that weather on Twitter. He described it as “living on Mars”. I’ll have to look it up.

Well, last week and the week before, it rained all day, everyday. And it was heaven  Did shoot out my internet a few times though :unamused:

Anyways, right now, it feels nice, probably 80F or so. And it was windy earlier today during band rehearsal so today after school it was 80F with a 75F gust every now and then. And that was heaven too

The weather has become very nice nowadays, although, in probably a few weeks, we are going to be freezing during football games, which is tons of fun x.x

Haha… thanks for the responses, guys. Yeah, it was pretty surreal and beautiful at the same time. It’s like someone put a red tint lens over your eyes…

There were reports of the dust cloud returning again this morning, but it wasn’t as dramatic as Wednesday’s one… it just looked like an overcast day or a hazy afternoon in Jakarta. It was clear again around mid-morning…

TWCS - Aw, someone actually reads my pointless tweets? I’m shocked :stuck_out_tongue:
But, yep, I did tweet a lot about the dust storm. Cue David Bowie’s song “Life on Mars”, because Sydney was it.

Here’s a few tweets I made:

  • 6:21AM. This was me when I was trying to work out why the sky was orangy-red when I woke up.
  • 10:02AM. It was a parody of one of those announcements they make when a plane arrives at it’s destination.
  • 10:26AM. I was unable to get to my desk as I didn’t have a key, and the only other person that I can get one off wasn’t there that day due to respiratory problems with the dust.
  • 10:28AM, in response to a question posed by Mygames.
  • 10:48AM

So, yeah, it was a pretty interesting day. The cleanup is still happening - porches to be mopped, cars to be washed! And as TDIT said, it did eventually clear up to a clear sky.

cloud + rain as usual here.

Interesting updates, Phileas. A once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us, I’m sure.

The last three days’ weather in Sydney has been much like Wall-E’s. Shame, I pity those who went out on the weekend thinking it would be sunny and cheer only to encounter doom and gloom. I’ve been cooped up in my house all long weekend and it’s drizzling outside! What the heck happened to spring? You call this spring? Argh… Unintelligible ranting

Was worse than usual today! I was wading through an inch of water on the road! and that was a 20 minute rainstorm!

Yeah, a friend of mine who’s started university up north in Leeds was complaining of some terrible rainstorms yesterday. Down here, we just got some mild drizzle. But the weather’s still bad. Looks like autumn has arrived!

Lucky you. It’s been better today though, although about 5-7c in the mornings! Brr.

Today was probably the windiest day I’ve ever encountered in my life! And having been to many countries, that says a lot!

Seriously man, winds were like, gale-force! It was not raining or anything (thank god!), more like overcast, but the gusts were like howling in your ear and the trees were starting to bend (at the branches, not the trunks yet). Leaves were swirling around like mini-tornadoes and you can walk through them! I kid you not! And everyone’s hairs who were not pinned back were whipped around! Even indoors now, I can hear windows rattle and this huge murmur echoing like thunder. It’s as if God turned on a leaf-blower.

Seriously. :frowning:

It’s cold, cold, cold, coooooold out!!! :open_mouth: Like I seriously hate it! It’s at LEAST 45 F out right now, and my parents said they’re not starting up our heat until November to save money. On the news they were saying New England could be getting early snow. EARLY SNOW as in like, the next three weeks or something! :frowning: Ughhh, I’m mad enough when it starts snowing in mid-November, because I just hate snow so much. Like, you guys don’t even know how much I hate it.

Can someone living in Cali hook me up with a place to stay over there or something for the winter?? jk, jk… sigh

Seriously. I love New England in the summer, but I would totally travel to the west coast for the winter if the opportunity were provided. I hate the below-0 temps and snowstorms…

little chef

Well now it has started to get quite chilly and stays that way all day. Today is supposed to be rainy and we’re supposed to get up to 2 inches. Wednesday was really windy with gusts up to 50 mph, causing power outages in some of the schools. So it’s been all go here this week!

Nice weathers we’re having, eh folks?

Still winter conditions here, drizzling with biting winds for an entire week now. I was just about to put my coats back into the cupboard…

Why not resurrect this? It’s been downright arctic here, with lows in the single digits and highs in the teens. According to my computer it’s a balmy 14 degrees (it was 9 degrees when i went to bed last night). Luckily not much snow, but when the air is this cold its too dry to snow much. I hear its supposed to warm up by the end of this week though. And by warm up, I mean slightly above freezing.
