Up Soundtrack

Just bought the Up soundtrack from iTunes. The music is just phenomenal. I got to go to an advanced screening and it works so well with the film. I absolutely love Michael Giacchino’s work.

The digital booklet is really neat. It contains a lot of nice screen caps from the film as well as images of Michael Giacchino and company working on the score and Pete Docter provided a little blurb on why he chose Michael Giacchino as the composer.

The video is really great as well; very informative on Michael Giacchino approach to writing the music. It does contain spoilers so I’d wait until seeing the film before watching it.

Still stupid Disney.

I caved and bought it, unfortunately.

Hey there…2nd post ever…sorry, just not much for being online or posting. Unless something really is bugging the crap out of me, then I feel more than compelled to give my .02 cents!

So in regards to the soundtrack only available in digital format…AAAAAHHHHHH!!!

There is only one positive I see from it and that is what I’m using to get me through this hard fact to accept: I like my soundtracks in chronological order! Normally, when a soundtrack is released I listen to it, learn the cues, memorize the titles, and then I’m all set for the movie. I watch the movie, put the soundtrack in order to the best of my memory, then wait for the dvd. Then I verify the order of the soundtrack with the movie on dvd, download the soundtrack on iTunes, place the tracks in order, make a cd copy of it, and listen to the soundtrack as the movie plays in my head.

So with UP I have to skip the actual loading of the soundtrack onto iTunes, and most likely wait until the dvd to put the tracks in order before making a cd copy of the soundtrack!

Anybody else out there like to put the soundtrack in chronological order when listening to them?

You mean to tell me that Up is only available digitally? Ugh. I just got finished pleading with iTunes to allow me to redownlad the Ratatouille soundtrack because my computer crashed and I never put it to my iPod/ made a CD of it. (Stupid. I know…) I have The Incredibles, MI, and Nemo, I was hoping to get back into that habit with Up. Sigh oh well.

I suppose I sorta do, except I usually buy the soundtrack after seeing the movie a few times.

While the movie is still in theaters (and after I have bought the soundtrack), I do more er less the same procedure, memorize, download to cd, and wait for dvd. And then I listen to the cd as I play the movie in my head. I always fear of getting the soundtrack before I see the movie because then I have this mental idea of what I think the movie should be like, and when the movie doesn’t turn out that way, I’m disappointed.

But with the Pixar movies and their corresponding soundtrack, I tend to get the titles and music aligned with the movie.

Isn’t that one painful process? I think it took me a month to actually get one of my other soundtracks back.

I heard they were going to release this in other countries as a physical CD. Not sure how true that is but I’ll keep an eye out. Sometimes Japan and European countries get extra releases because they have different tastes and more of a market than the US. I really don’t think this thread or petition will make any difference, at least not for this year. It’s too late for that, I think. But maybe Pixar will read the Amazon and iTunes reviews (when they go to download the soundtrack) and see our discontentment and make the right choice next year. I encourage if you do buy it online, give the album the rating it deserves but write in the comments exactly how you feel. At the end of the day, I’m sure Disney doesn’t give a damn as long as you’ve made the transaction, but hopefully Pixar will notice. As a soundtrack enthusiast, this just isn’t right.

Oh, a digital booklet and video. That’s nice. I guess we’re cool now, Disney. Wonder how long it will take before I can see those on the Internet for free… It is nice that the booklet is being released, albeit online, and it does save paper (and manufacturing costs) but nothing would compare to a physical release. And look at that, apparently, I can’t download from iTunes or Amazon the soundtrack due to licensing restrictions, but a quick search to download it from those file-hosting sites comes up with plenty of options for me. I wonder which way I will download the OST so I can use the music for Radio Pixar???

 1. Disney releases Up soundtrack as digital-only download
 2. Offer to take the money Disney is throwing away
 3. ???
 4. Profit!

Well, I did buy it in the format that allows you to open it in other programs, so I imagine that I would be able to lend you some necessary tracks. Also, I think the three Lucasfilm soundbits at the end could proove very useful to the Radio Pixar “sound archives”. (I remember I used to have one until my drive went ka-blooey.) So let me know what you need for the show. I’ll be more than happy to help.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure they show a shot of Pete Docter playing the string bass in the orchestra in the free video bonus that comes with the iTunes album.

You’re right AND E. I had to back track because I thought my eyes deceived me when I first watched it!

I see him too! It’s st approximately 3:37 for any one else who is curious. It could be a lookalike, though. I guess we’ll have to wait for the credits.

For those who want to save a buck, it’s available in 256 kb mp3 from lala.com for $7.49:

And, with a free account, you can listen (stream) the whole album for free!

I haven’t seen it yet, but it sounds like it is Pete Docter playing the bass since he does know how to play a lot of instruments.

Just thought I’d put up a screen cap:

Thanks Hannahmation. It looks like he’s playing pizzicato. Oh, how I’d like to play bass instead of violin sometimes - it’s a lot less contorted position to play in.

Thatnks, Hannahmation for that screen cap.

Yes, that is Pete Docter playing (for those who didn’t see it, I posted about him joining in with the orchestra for a bit on one of the sessions in the Up Tempo thread).

Thanks yamfox, for the link for another way to buy the MP3 album (without hopfully having to install downloading software). Only drawback I suppose is you don’t get the iTunes extras like the video.

Speaking of the video… what does it show? Does it show clips of the orchestra playing, or just the shot of Mr. Docter playing the bass?

For those of you who got it through iTunes and have the little “booklet”, the picture of the orchestra is the one they took after one of the earlier sessions, where we all crowded together as someone got up onto a ladder to snap the entire orchestra’s picture (that’s the Warner scoring stage). And even though it doesn’t list our names in the booklet (boo!), it’s nicely dedicated to Larry Corbett (Michael’s principal cellist who passed away during the film’s production).

Will try to post more when I have time.

It has some orchestra shots, but not as many as I would like to see. The scene with Pete Docter is just sort of thrown in there- I didn’t notice it until it was pointed out. In the booklet, most pages are movie stills, buth they do have a write up about Michael by Pete, as well as a few group shots. This is the in-studio one.

Any hits to where you are in the shot, miafka?

EDIT: Looking at the booklet’s credits, I just have to ask what exactly is a “Compositional Robotic Defensive Artist”?

… Cute photo there.

Thanks, AJD08!

I really loved Giacchino’s score for Ratatouille, and love this one, too. “Memories Can Weigh You Down” makes me think of the bit in the Ratatouille “Dinner Rush” track, where Linguini says, “We need someone to wait tables,” and his theme suddenly kicks into this grand, triumphant mode. And “The Ellie Badge” truly does sound like a lost Scott-Joplin-era piece, just lovely.

I bought and downloaded the soundtrack from Amazon the day it came out - first time I’ve ever downloaded anything like that! Welcome to the 21st century! The thing is - if they offered any kind of liner notes/digital booklet with it, I must have missed it.

So… who sings the “Spirit of Adventure” song? (Darn theatre shut off the credits before the end of the show, or I’m guessing I could have found out there.) Oh, and are there lyrics posted for it anywhere? There are a couple of lines I can’t quite get.

I don’t know the man’s name who sang the song, but what was interesting in seeing the movie was hearing how they “aged” the song through effects. While recording it, we were actually fed the vocals (we could hear him singing… often when recording songs, the booth will cut the vocals because it can be distracting to the players), so we heard him singing the song live through the cans (he was in the isobooth)… but in the movie when the song comes towards the end of the credits (or on the soundtrack), the song is made to sound old, like a scratchy old record. It’s a fun song though. As far as the lyrics… I don’t have the soundtrack in front of me, so can’t help you… maybe if you want to type out the line(s) where you’re missing a couple words, we all could help fill in the missing ones. You know, I forgot to look to see if they listed the singer’s name. But I did notice that it said the usual “Soundtrack available on Walt Disney Records” (or something like that). It should have read “Soundtrack available only for download from Amazon or iTunes.”

As far as the booklet/video, I think that was an iTunes exclusive.

Thanks for posting the screen caps!

Any hits to where you are in the shot, miafka?
See that styrofoam head in the front, to the left of Pete Docter? That’s me :sunglasses:

First off, thank you, Miafka, for sharing so much of your knowledge and experience on the movie with us.

I hope it’s OK for me to post all of this (mods, please delete if not), but here’s what I’ve got of the lyrics, with (???) where I’m really lost (I may have misheard some other bits, too - it took me a while to get the [spoil]“New Deal”[/spoil] line, but it’s just the sort of topical/period reference that would be in a “real” song like this.

Edit: All right! Thanks to miafka’s help, I think these are the complete lyrics now! If anyone has other thoughts, please say. This was fun!

Lyrics:
Adventure is out there, it’s heading our way
So grab your scarf and goggles, let’s fly!
I’ve mapped out our journey, we’re up here to stay.
A sunset is our home.
A moonbeam we will own.
My Spirit of Adventure is you!

Adventure is out there, it’s my Holy Grail,
So cannibals and tigers beware!
I’ve made my life’s journey to blaze every trail.
I’ve got my aero fare.
The high-brows will be there.
My Spirit of Adventure is you!

The freaks of nature span the globe, that’s too big to deny.
With canine guards we’ll travel there and spit into their eye!
I can’t wait another day
For my life to waste away.
We’ll make it a joint venture, before we’re in our dentures.
My Spirit of Adventure is you!

Gargantuan monstrosities, larger than a whale.
Come with me and we will snatch that giant monkey’s tail.
Bang! Bang! Once the smoke has cleared,
After all the crowds have cheered,
Another risky venture – it sure would be the clincher!
My Spirit of Adventure is you!

Adventure is out there, let’s crack some champagne.
I’ve hung a hundred heads on my wall.
To say that I’ve traveled is far too mundane.
Let’s grab our aero fare.
A New Deal will be there.
The Spirit of Adventure is something to indenture.
My Spirit of Adventure is you!
Anyone who’d like to, correct away!
