I can understand why Noteldnep89, but I will always have a soft spot for this film as this and The Lion King were my favourites growing up. I watched this to the point where to VHS wore down and I still love it now, even if there are issues with it. ![]()
Sorry to hear your tape wore down.
As far as Lion King goes, I loved that movie too as a kid. I have both on VHS.
Like Cars, I think Bug’s Life is a good film but they’re weak compared to the other Pixar films. The story for both of those films seemed kind of original, especially Cars.
Hey thats okay, I have the DVD now ![]()
I am not really sure why it’s underrated, but I’ve always really liked it. It’s not my favorite Pixar film, but I still think it’s a great film.
I’m kind of getting a better opinion on the film after I saw it a couple times recently.
It could be a combination of the fact that yes, it was sandwiched between the two Toy Story films, but also remember the whole debacle with Antz and Jeffrey Katzenberg leaving Disney, and basically stealing ideas for A Bug’s Life to make Antz, then releasing it before ABL. From my general observation, more people know about and love Antz over ABL, which is very sad but I think that would be your first reason why ABL is as underrated as it is - simply because Antz is more widely known and watched than ABL. Statistically, ABL did better box office-wise than Antz did, but is still very underrated.
Personally, this is one of my favorite Pixar films! I grew up watching it, and it was the first Pixar film my family owned on VHS.
I am still stunned by the animation in it for being only Pixar’s second film. Yes, it’s still a bit primitive-looking when compared to say, Monsters Inc., but if you keep in mind that this was just immediately following Toy Story, it’s a wonder to watch. The lighting and environments all look so lifelike for being made in 1998!
To this day I still really enjoy this movie, and it could partly be due to my youngster emotional and nostalgic attachment, too. But I think the characters are so unique and Flik is truly a relatable little bug. When I connect with characters in a movie, especially the main character, it makes me love that movie so much more.
little chef
I also have alot of nostalgic attachment to it, it was one of the first Pixar and animated films in general that I watched.
Good point you make about the debacle with Dreamworks and Antz. If I’m correct, Katzenberg came up with the idea for Antz the day he left Pixar in 1994. Could be wrong though.
I hate him so much for doing that^^.
It’s actually a pretty interesting development story for both of those movies.
That is true^^.
Thanks for bringing that up little_chef. The Antz/Bugs Life controversy defintely had something to do with it’s underratedness. But today, abl is better well known than Antz.
I might be one of the only members here who thought Antz was better.
I liked Antz, but I believe ABL has aged an awful lot better.
Yep. Like I always tend to think of it as “Pixar’s Lost Film” given how it hasn’t aged well.
No I mean that I think A Bug’s Life has aged better because of it’s stylised animation and considerable lack of pop culture jokes! ![]()
True. The animation style looks good or even better then stuff we get today. cough Hoodwink 2 cough
You have a good point there!
Sure do! I find it funny that a 2011 animated film was very inferior to one that came out 13 years after Bug’s Life. By both animation style and quality of the film.
