It is established that Woody’s just about the oldest of the bunch, but I wonder about his past. Thinking along the lines of Andy’s father being the one who gave Woody to him here: Does this mean Woody was Andy’s dad’s toy before? I thought it was a reasonable conclusion, but I started to wonder about it in TS3. Woody just can’t seem to handle the fact Andy’s going, and insists he still cares for them. Even though he’s right, the way he acts…you’d think it’d be less of a drama for him after losing an owner before. Woody had to have been put in the attic or not been played with for a while, if he came out in the 1950’s. I’m also curious, was Woody just never exposed to his merchandising? This brings up my other theory, that maybe Andy’s Dad was somewhat a collector, not like Al, but enough to keep Woody in his box until he felt it would be a nice gift to Andy. But that would give Woody a past of YEARS of sitting in a box, and judging by the Prospector, they don’t just sit there (unless they’re to be in hypersleep). Woody’s definetly seen some years before everyone else, from him being wise to things like daycare and such…but he also seems to be oblivious, or at least doesn’t mention anything, about before a time with Andy…
Or, is there a completely different past than a past with Andy’s father??
Woody probably feels that strongly about Andy because it was the same way with his father. That meaning he was one of his father’s favorite toys, and he held onto him until Andy came along, and then he was passed down. Woody struck a sentimental spot with Andy, and that’s what made him take him to college, so chances are it would go the same way that I described with Andy’s dad.
And would it be possible that Slinky was passed down since he was also a 50’s toy?
Well Slinky does have a strong relationship with Woody. But I’m almost positive that’s because he’s a dog and looks up to the “Boss of the house”, or in this case, boss of the room. I think that’s what Pixar was aiming for.
