Ucch. Every summer I plan to make my official Top 100 list, but every summer, I never find the time… This year may be the year, though. I’d probably do it in August, when the most updated Leonard Maltin Movie Guide comes out. If not, then I’ll just post the films that I list on Facebook here.
I like a lot of films. Obviously Pixar films are up there, in particular Monsters, Inc., WALL-E and Toy Story, but here are some other films I like-
-The Big Lebowski. This is probably my favourite film of all time and I don’t really know why. I do love the characters and the story, though strange, just sort of works…But it’s not the sort of film I thought I would’ve liked. The Dude in particular has a really captivating something about him, and of course Steve Buscemi’s character Donny makes the film that much more special.
-Artifical Intelligence. Another very strange film, but it always makes me cry and I love Haley Joel Osment. It’s a very cold film but that mixture of sci-fi with the story of a little boy who wants to tell his mother how much he loves her is just so potent. And Jude Law rocks in it.
-Alien. Ultimate sci-fi film, nothing’s beaten it yet and I don’t think anything ever will.
-Jurassic Park, in particular the original but the second and third are alright too. This is more of a nostalgia thing as I grew up watching these films, and as a dinosaur lover it really was a dream come true.
-Fargo. More Coen brothers, of course (they’re my favourite directors). The dry humour, brilliant acting and exagerrated gore makes this one of those films you never forget, even if you didn’t enjoy it.
I’m sure there’s more, but those are my ultimate best films for now.
To be more specific with some choices from my list, here are some short descriptions to go along with them.
The Terminator - Proof that story and characters are more important than effects. Redefined action/sci-fi for the 80’s.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day - A sequel better than the original? Again it redefined action/sci-fi and effects for the decade.
Koyaanisqatsi - Revolutionary for its time. Film as meditation. Pretty pictures, unique score = big screen Rorschach Test.
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan - Proves that special effects are secondary to drama and character relationships. One of the best movie villains ever in the best Star Trek movie. Don’t have to be a Trekkie to enjoy. KHANNNNNNNNN!!!
The Graduate - Refreshing, original, timely, and genre defying/inventing. Great acting, story, theme, soundtrack, and directing.
The Godfather II - What more can be said about this? Epic in all areas: filmmaking, characters, emotion, etc. Better than the first!
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - Wow. Iconic, epic, ambitious genre defining/re-defining filmmaking. Oh, and the music! Great stuff.
American Beauty - Best family drama since Ordinary People - both Oscar winners. Funny, touching, and insightful.
The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - Great cast, director and writing make for a solid remake with a cynical 70s’ ending.
The Dark Knight - Not perfect, but pretty close. The best superhero movie ever? Probably. Big visuals, action, ideas and characters. How can you stop watching once you’ve turned it on? Definitely one of the best movies of the decade.
WALL•E - Wow! Pixar a.k.a. movie gods of quality top themselves yet again. Great visuals, story, characters and message.
Alien - The best Sci-Fi/Horror movie ever and one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever. Inventive on so many levels. Classic.
Magnolia - Epic ensemble drama at its daring yet uneven best! Tom Cruise’s best performance. Paul Thomas Anderson has mad skillz.
And that’s about it. Hope you could now relate more to my choices. Until next time, choose your movie wisely, because Hollywood gives us more of what we pay for.
Till next time, long live good movies!

I’ve noticed that a lot of you posted Disney or Pixar films in this thread but are a little lacking on other non-Pixar or non-Disney movies. Do remember that this thread is to post the films you feel to be at ‘top quality,’ not at the top of your interest. Just because I like Pixar and its movies, doesn’t make all of them ‘top films.’
This is just a gentle reminder, just in case. You guys might have not posted films that are only bordered by your interest and totally not inclusive of your opinion on the movies that deserve to be called ‘top films,’ so just don’t mind what I wrote if that be true.

Flare: Hm… yeah, I think the kind of people may have a Disney/Pixar bias? I guess they took it as a ‘Your Top Films of All Time’ list rather than ‘The Top Films of All Time’. Or maybe the folks here don’t watch enough live-action movies? I can see you’re a massive movie buff from your extensive list, though! Did you really watch all of those? I’ve always wanted to watch some of them but never got round to it… TDK FTW!
Here’s my top films of all time, listed by genre, off the top of my head. I judge these based on how many times I’ve watched and still want to watch them, and how ‘epic’ they are, so although I might like some flicks like Shoot Em’ Up or Transformers, they didn’t make the cut. Where movies cover more than one genre, I list it under its predominant one, so like for Wall-E, although it’s a sci-fi romantic comedy action-adventure movie, I list it under romance, its main ‘theme’. Here we go:

Speed

The Rock
Casino Royale (2006)
Licence to Kill
New Police Story
The Dark Knight

Comedy:

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

The Prince of Egypt
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
And don’t tell me that ‘Animation’ and ‘Superhero Movies’ are genres.
Yes. I had checked most of them out on watch-movies-links.net - an indecent act for a movie buff, but seeing as how most of them are no longer available even in the oldest DVD/video store, you could see where I’m coming from.
The Prince of Egypt was beautiful and spectacular. It was definitely Dreamworks Animation at its best. It (tried to) stay true to the original story in the bible, yet keeping it open to non-believers. Genius.
Hm… I’ve seen some of the titles sold at That CD Shop and HMV outlets in Singapore. Just visit any of the video stores along Orchard, they sell some of the re-released classics. If you have NLB membership you can borrow the DVDs from the Esplanade library. That’s where I got my movie ‘fix’ legally the last time I returned to Sing.
Amen to that. I really wished Dreamworks would return to their former glory days.
Hah, right, HMV. That was a cool shop. It had a lot of good movies (along with bad ones) sold in their store. The only one I know of its location was in the Citylink Mall, located near the City Hall SMRT station. Good place. Not far, too.
But, if I’m feeling too lazy - like you will be during Transformers 2’s screening, TDIT - it’s watch-movies-links.net.
There’s another one opposite Cineleisure along Orchard. Much bigger store than City Link’s one. You need to go out more.
¿Qué ? I think my brain and heart will be running a hundred miles an hour when I watch TF2… metaphorically, of course.
I think I’ve gone a little off-topic…
No - your brain will probably be shut off. It’s Micheal Effing Bay’s Transformers 2, remember? And I was referring to how you were saying you will be too lazy to actually buy a ticket for a good movie and go watch TF 2 instead.
That’s cos’ I felt Mr Bay (or at least, his animators) deserved my money. If my friends wanted to watch Disaster Movie or a Uwe Boll flick, then I would actually be compelled enough to pull that ticket switcheroo (where you buy the ticket to a ‘better’ movie but go see the ‘crappier’ one instead). As for reactions to TF2, well, my brain is on “OMG” mode, so no, I won’t actually feel lazy. Different people have different reactions.
I think that’s your heart. I mean, if your brain is on, you would probably be focusing more on the story-logic of the movie than on the cool eye-candies Bay have to display.
Also, you were probably referring to the trailer, which would only show you the good stuff in the movie. It’s a marketing advertisement, so wait till after you watch till you make a judgment, like I will.
I’m not saying he totally doesn’t deserve our money, just that it is a little bit (okay, a whole lot) disappointing, but that’s towards TF1. To make judgment towards the sequel, I’m gonna have to watch it to be in a position to criticize it.
Yup, I agree on that point with you. I advise people to do the same on other movies like Beverly Hills Chihuahua, so maybe it’s time I should ‘walk’ my own ‘talk’ and reserve judgement of whether it’s awesome or not till after I’ve seen it. Fairy 'nuff.
