I think Randall always feels "Invisible" to everyone.

I’ve posted about this on Randall-specific forums before in the past but I thought I’d make a topic about it here too.

I just think it’s interesting that Randall obviously wants attention from others…to be liked, admired, praised. You can tell that in Monster’s Inc.

And I just think it’s rather ironic that he wants attention and to be admired and yet his ability is actually being invisible…blending in…not being noticed.

He wants to stand out, be number one…and yet his ability is for him to disappear. :frowning:

Interesting take on Randall, Minty Fresh.

It reminds me of Rango the chameleon from the movie of the same name. Except Johnny Depp’s character wants nothing more than to blend in, but he sticks out as a “stranger”, and eventually has to save an entire town!

I should watch Monsters Inc again and study Randall as a character. He’s certainly one of Pixar’s more interesting antagonists, seeking self-validation from others yet having a competitive streak.

I’ve seen Rango but only once…not sure how much he was really like Randall.

I just came across the perfect song for Randall: youtube.com/watch?v=mq2tudquQMQ

It’s rather sad. :frowning:

That artist seems to have a few songs that suit him, here’s another one: youtube.com/watch?v=8Y-ct6T7hkc

Really makes you think more about his character doesn’t it?

This is all very interesting.

I’m just thinking about how invisibility aids Randall, because it’s different in both films.

When Monsters, Inc was in production, I’d imagine that the filmmakers didn’t give much thought into Randall as a college student (as the idea of such a movie was not on anyone’s mind). He was a very discrete villain, we really didn’t know much about his motives. Details that is.

In that film, he was given invisibility because one it is rather useful for a scarer to have invisibility. Because it is terrifying to the victims. It also made Randall all the more discrete and mysterious.

Then we have Monsters University. For continuity reasons, Randall had to still have the invisbility power. But it works on this level, because of the irony. He wants to be cool and noticed, but he invisible as well. So it is pretty sad.

And it’s also very sad how his invisibility is contributed to Randall’s future as a villain in Monsters Inc. [spoil](As we see in the final scare competition, his chameleon qualities cause him to blend in the pink heart fabric in front of the whole school)[/spoil]
