The San Francisco 49ers have been mauling opposing offenses. They’ve held each of their last three opponents to under 4.0 yards per offensive play. They’ve held two straight opposing quarterbacks under 80 yards passing. None of those teams were world beaters offensively Wes Horton Color Rush Jersey , but neither are the Carolina Panthers. That puts the onus on the Panthers defense to win this game. The 49ers profile similarly to the Panthers—they’re built around a dominant defense with an offense that’s just good enough to stay afloat. They rank in the middle of the pack both in the passing game and in the running game on a per play basis. They’re second in the league in rush yards per game, but that’s inflated by their league leading 39 carries per game. They’re 4.4 yards per carry is just 12th best in the league. Their ground game is carried by a four headed defensive backfield. Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida are the current go-tos, but Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. are more than capable if called upon. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has brought with him the one-cut zone run game that he inherited from his father, and that style has given the Panthers trouble in the past. The 49ers passing game parallels that of the Panthers in previous years. Tight end George Kittle dominated Jimmy Garoppolo’s attention like Greg Olsen used to with Cam Newton. The outside receiving corps is a hodgepodge group of average sized young players and castoffs. George Kittle has been targeted 42 times and accounted for 40% of the team’s receiving yardage. Deebo Samuel comes in second with 22 targets. This game profiles like the two meetings between these teams back in 2013. The Panthers took the regular season win over the 49ers 10-9 but faltered in the playoffs. It’s likely we’ll see something like that again on Sunday. To make that win a reality, here’s what the Panthers have to do:Give the offense short fields. This falls on the special teams too. The Panthers offense is going to find it very difficult to move the ball against this 49ers defense, particularly given their third down struggles. The Panthers are the 23rd best team in the league at converting third downs and the 49ers are the third best team at stopping opponents from converting. Long Stephen Curry Jersey , sustained drives aren’t in the cards, and it’s unfair to expect Christian McCaffrey to break off an 80 yard touchdown run every other week. The defense needs to get the offense the ball in scoring positions, whether that be via turnovers or sacks that pin the 49ers deep in their own territory. Please tackle Tevin Coleman. In his last two games against the Panthers, Coleman carried the ball 26 times for 158 yards (6.1 yards per carry). He routinely gashed the Panthers with off tackle runs. He hasn’t found his footing yet with San Francisco, but that can change quickly. And his running mate Matt Breida is a home run hitter in his own right. The Panthers have struggled to limit big plays in the running game. That’ll need to improve on Sunday. Make tackles on the perimeter. Jimmy Garoppolo is one of the least aggressive quarterbacks when it comes to throwing past the first down marker. His average throw is 2.6 yards short of the sticks. Only Luke Falk, Teddy Bridgewater Shaq Thompson Color Rush Jersey , and Mitch Trubisky throw shorter. The Panthers can get themselves off the field on third downs if they can come up and make tackles. The defense’s performance in this game is paramount. They’ll need to make splash plays to give their offense a chance against an immovable 49ers defense. Editor’s Note: Kyle Allen is a quarterback. (That’ll draw in the clicks.) The fifth-year option is a powerful tool, and teams with 2015 first-round picks who panned out are using it, extensively.Of the 2015 first-rounders whose fifth-year options were exercised, only one of them — Rams running back Todd Gurley — has gotten a second contract. All of the others who had their fifth-year options picked up (from Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston to Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota to Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper to Washington guard Brandon Scherff to Jets defensive lineman Leonard Williams to Falcons EDGE rusher Vic Beasley to Vikings cornerback Trae Waynes to Saints offensive lineman Andrus Peat to Dolphins receiver DeVante Parker to Chargers running back Melvin Gordon to 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead to Rams cornerback Marcus Peters to Eagles receiver Nelson Agholor to Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree to Cardinals offensive lineman D.J. Humphries to Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson to Cowboys defensive back Byron Jones to Browns defensive back Damarious Randall) continue to wait for long-term contracts. It wasn’t supposed to be that way. The league adopted a true rookie wage scale in 2011 in order to prevent busts from sucking millions out of the system. Players who end up earning the big contracts they no longer get are supposed to get them, once they become eligible, after three NFL seasons. The Rams gave Gurley his long-term contract a year ago Kawann Short Jersey , and they probably regret it, given the current condition of his knee. The rest of the first-rounders from 2015 whose options were picked up will have to carry the injury risk for another season, and then either hit the open market or deal with the franchise tag.One of them — Chargers running back Melvin Gordon — openly has vowed to hold out from training camp unless he gets a new contract. Although players operating under the terms of a fifth-year option face dramatically lower daily fines for skipping camp ($30,000 instead of $40,000), the CBA makes the fine for skipping a preseason game the equivalent of a regular-season game check. It thus will be interesting to see whether any of these 2015 first-rounders other than Gordon decide not to show up for training camp. Last year Vernon Butler Color Rush Jersey , Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald and then-Raiders linebacker Khalil Mack, both entering their option years, held out through the preseason — and they ended up being the two highest-paid defensive players in league history when all was said and done.
