As the year 2006 nears its end, we are treated to DVDs of some very awesome animated
movies. These are the DVD release dates:
October 17 - Over The Hedge
October 24 - Monster
House
November 7 - Cars
November 21 - Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
November 28 - The Ant Bully
I
find the time gaps between theater release dates and DVD release dates very interesting.
Over The Hedge -
5 months
Monster House - 3 months
Cars -
5 months
Ice Age 2: The Meltdown - 8 months
The
Ant Bully - 4 months
It’s taking IA2:TM 8
months to come out on DVD? That’s too long for me!

Out of those, the only ones I will actually get are Monster House and Cars, I
think.
What exactly determines how long a film will take from the cinema to be released onto DVD?
I guess popularity, but I guess you will have to
consider the content and howlong does it take to get it all on the DVD. I thought it takes six months to go from
movie to DVD.

Hmm, yeah,
that does seem to be like the average time. I guess films that they know are going to do incredibly well have a
longer DVD release time because they can still be making money from the cinemas.
Well, didn’t the Incredibles and
Nemo take 6 months from its release date in theaters to its release date for DVD?
Finding Nemo took 6 months to
come out on DVD, but The Incredibles took 4 months.

I’m guessing IA2 is taking so long because it’s not in
as much demand. Personally, I thought the film was a waste of rendering power. Maybe that’s a bit harsh, and I
have nothing against the first film, but I saw it at the $2 theatre in my college town because I needed a break
from exams, and because Alan Tudyk (aka Wash from Firefly!) is a voice actor in the film… and I still
questioned if it was worth my $2. And I feel like it didn’t get all that enthusiastic of a response from the
general public, so they’re not going to rush it to DVD sales. Cars, on the other hand, is a high quality film,
had a really good response from the public, and so it goes to DVD faster. Woo, economics.
It’s also stragtegic -
Monster House is coming out in October instead of November because it’ll be a good Halloween
movie.
Cars which premeired BEFORE MH, is coming out November because PIXAR/Disney thinks it’ll have a
good Winter Holiday release.
As for Ice Age 2 . . . that is a bit odd . . . .

I don’t
like any dreamworks animation, they just look sloppy.
What do you mean by sloppy?
~~=oP
I always thought Dreamworks
animations looked really good- they don’t have the same feel as Pixar, but they are good quality. I find the one
thing that Dreamworks falls down on is the most important thing of all- the story. That, and their characters
aren’t as full as Pixar’s.

I wouldn’t say sloppy… having seen Over the Hedge fairly recently, I’d say
that it’s fairly tight as animation goes. It’s a different aesthetic, though. Pixar has a very specific
aesthetic that is easily identifiable to most people. Dreamworks doesn’t have that in the same way. I
generally see animation in two categories: Pixar and the complement of Pixar. Dreamworks’ aesthetic has a
fairly wide range that makes it harder to identify.
So, it’s different. Very, very different. But not
sloppy. I’ve seen sloppy… heck, I’ve made sloppy. Dreamworks isn’t it.
DreamWorks is not sloppy.
I’ll tell you what IS sloppy though…Doogal (the US
version). Which is kinda sad, because I had higher expectations of that movie before watching
it.

Yeah it’s weird how they figure out these release
dates. I’m seeing dvd trailers for movies that are being released now, that came out AFTER Cars which i dont
really get.

I don’t think I’m buying any of them - I’m
still waiting for the Cars 2-disk to be announced, and none of the other films make me want to spend 25 bucks on
'em (I’m hard to please).
Anyway, I think the release dates have a lot to do with the money it made at
the box office - the films with the longest wait made the most money.
I dunno you guys, do you honestly think they will put the movie and 2 short films plus the
special feutures all in one disc??? That sounds a bit oidd if you ask me
