Do you ‘get’ this movie?

  • Yes, it’s a surrealistic, postmodern commentary about existentialism, cynicism, hope, and the human spirit.
  • No, but it looks weird and wonderful, and I’m curious to find out what’s it about.
  • No, I don’t know "what’s it on about", and I don’t want to know. I’m sick of those ‘meaning of life’ movies.

Straight on the heels of Mary and Max comes another traditionally-animated Aussie claymation movie, as the fourth film this year with the number ‘9’ in the title: $9.99.

Another one of those “Life, the universe, and everything” movies (like Big Fish, Across the Universe, and Slumdog Millionaire), this film revolves around an intriguing premise; what if you could obtain a booklet explaining the very reason for your existence, for the bargain price of just nine dollars and ninety-nine cents?

Featuring an intriguing cast of witches, Lilliputians and a guardian angel (their aesthetics reminding me of Celebrity Deathmatch, for some reason), this has to be the most bewildering and head-scratching film I’ve heard of this year. I just hope the story makes more sense than the teaser.

weird looking film, not that’s ever a bad thing.

I’ll wait until I see more reviews.

It’s usually odd when filmmakers choose animation as their medium for a film story that almost looks like a better fit for live-action.

But anyways, I can say it looks kinda interesting; although, I don’t really like the quality of the animation.

Yup, I have to agree with the points both of you made there. I’m certainly curious, but I’m not exactly excited yet.

You know, maybe someone (like Yours Truly) should do a mash-up of 9, Nine, District 9, and $9.99

You know, this is a very interesting fad year.
Like previous years, the world fell in love with movies about bugs, rats, penguins, fish… But this year, we’re crazy about the number 9… lol

Geoffrey Rush, Anthony LaPaglia, Samuel Johnson, Claudia Karvan, Joel Edgerton? Talk about a Secret Life of Us reunion. I think this would have been better in live-action. I find the lips distracting. Interesting story, though.

I agree, I don’t really like the animation style all that much. It does have an interesting story though. I’ll have to see if people like it or not.

It looks very odd but, I might end up seeing it. You never know, it could turn out to be a masterpiece!

Hmmm… seems from the responses that this film will get a lukewarm response. I wonder who voted the third option?
