My brother and I figured this out after watching Samurai 7, and anime based off the 1954 movie
“The Seven Samurai”
Anyway, the plot of the movie is as follows: "At the start of the film,
a village of Japanese farmers are under constant attack by marauding bandits. Desperate to rid themselves of the
threat, they enlist the assistance of samurai to defend the village." Quoted from Wikipedia.
Also,
"The comedy film Three Amigos spun a twist on the plot of The Seven Samurai: the gunslinging ronin are
actually professional actors who think they are being hired to pretend to save a town from bandits. The same idea
was later replicated in the animated film A Bug’s Life and the Star Trek spoof Galaxy Quest. " Quoted from
Wikipedia.
There you have it. Just some intersting bits of info. If you want to know more, here’s a link
to the Wikipeida page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Samurai
I thought it was just a twist on that
old tale… that was like the grasshoppers are lazy and the ants work really hard…?

It also strongly reminds me of The
Magnificent Seven, which was made in 1960… I think this is an American version of The Seven
Samurai.

Just like “Cars” and “Doc Hollwood”, you’re goigng to have
nit-pickers in the film industry who try to make some movie plots seem like they’ve copied off of eachother if
there’s a plot string that even resembles one from another movie…

Yeah, to be honest I don’t
really care.
It’s very hard to get a 100%
original film nowadays, because all ideas have already been done. Therefore, it’s not surprising that ABL has
similarities to previous films.
Yes, similarities . . . but
PIXAR would never ever rip something off. It’s just not the way they do it.
That’s why they do no films
based on true stories, from books, television, etc – Everything is made in-house!
And that’s very unlike most of Disney’s original works,
which were all pretty much based on stories that had been around previously.

To be fair, there are more then just a few similarties. Most of the plot is the
same.
But I don’t want to start an argument. I just don’t want to see Akira Kurosawa’s work
underappricated.

I know that Pixar would never rip-off an idea, but I can’t help but be bugged (pun intended) by how similar A Bug’s Life is to The Three Amigos. Specifically because Randy Newman was involved with both movies, so surely he would have made someone at Pixar aware of it?? It’s just strange.
Nevertheless, I love both films.
Hard to be too original these days- point is they borrowed an idea and made it their own. I see no problem in that. A lot of people do it.

I never did support “rip-offs” of other films, but, as some of you dudes previously stated, it is rather hard to think up original ideas/plots now-a-days. Nevertheless, A Bug’s Life is probably the only Pixar film that reminds me of another, dated/older production. (I’ve also heard talk of Cars being a rip-off of some other film – Doc Hollywood , or something – , but I can’t say for sure whether or not that’s true.)
