BMW has unveiled a car that has, (presumably) instead of a metal chassis, a flexible cloth-like “skin”.
Here’s a video showing it: youtube.com/watch?v=kTYiEkQYhWY
I dunno about you guys but it weirded me out!
Opinions?

Seen this. Made the Transformers fandom have a gigglefit. XD
I just kept thinking through the first few seconds of that, ‘what if someone, like, crashes?’ I don’t think something that isn’t metal will protect the passengers enough. But there’s probably some reasonable explanation. ![]()
That reasonable explanation would be that this is a concept car and will never see the road.
There’s probably some protective metal underneath the “cloth”. Looks awesome!
Correct. The car was created for experiment and for science! I think it was more of BMW trotting that they COULD make cars out of cloth if they wanted to, they just choose not to. More of a publicity stunt than something that was actually considered.
But I’d drive one ![]()
I thought the GINA was a fascinating concept. Some Chris Bangle touches are growing on me, though I still find the E61 5 series ungainly (though the E39 was one of the most elegant BMWs I think).
As far as crash safety, I figure the substructure on the GINA could be designed with crash protection in mind, I mean Tennessee Saturns had plastic bodies so the entire crash structure is frame and no body (same with Corvettes), so it is doable.
I don’t really trust German car reliability, which is a shame, as I really like the MkV VW Golf and W204 Mercedes C.
