AFI's 10 Top 10

The American Film Institute has just released its annual list. This year, they’ve decided to list out what they deem to be the Top 10 best films for 10 different genres. (See afi.com/10top10/)

Now, I’m sure Brad Bird wouldn’t approve (and neither would I), but “Animation” happens to be one of the “genres” in AFI’s list. Opinions aside, Finding Nemo and Toy Story both made it to the “animation” list. (“Ratatouille” isn’t eligible to be in the list yet).

I love what AFI does, because I think coming up with these lists is a good way to celebrate film, but there are, of course, certain things in their most recent list that I disagree with:

  1. “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope” was only ranked #2 in the “Sci-Fi” genre! (In all fairness to the #1 spot-taker, I haven’t seen “2001: A Space Odyssey”. I’ll certainly keep an open mind when I watch it, but I can honestly say that it’ll be REALLY tough for “2001” to top “Star Wars” in my list).

  2. “The Incredibles” is not in the “animation” list. I was also surprised that “The Iron Giant” didn’t make it.

  3. “Shrek” ranked higher than “Finding Nemo”.

I have mixed opinions on the list. I think FN and Lion King should be in the top 2. And I am surprised that TI ain’t on the list cause it is in the top on other lists.

Yeah, uh, Shrek should not have beat Nemo IMO. No. Just no.

As for the sci-fi list, 2001 was a fantastic and group breaking movie. Star Wars also was. It’s debatable, but I think that’s fair.

Dont even get me started on that list yesterday! But I guess half the reason they make these lists is to spawn debate. The animation one was totally off, for me. And they picked some oddball categories (I mean, courtroom drama?? I cant even name 10 courtroom movies, let alone pick 10 that are any good) and their definitions on how they classified them didnt always make sense. Like I dont consider Clockwork Orange to be sci-fi. To me, that’s a horror film. And I would never consider King Kong to be a fantasy film. That’s a monster movie. But I guess my definitions arent the same as theirs…
