Am I the only one who thinks Toy Story is still an outstanding animated movie?
I know it’s a classic, and it’s a must for any child, but all too often I’m hearing something like “it was good for the time” or “animators must laugh at how primitive this movie was.” And I just don’t get it. Sure, animation has come a long was (PIXAR knows that better than anyone), but I don’t see what everyone’s complaining about. It has to be one of the most realistic computer animated films ever. Does anyone else think this, or am I just crazy?
I don’t judge quality based on realism. Realism is a superficial quality that animation needs to avoided getting too close to. Yes, it was an outstanding movie, for any time period, mainly for its story and characters though. I cant ignore that certain aspects of the visuals have started to age though. You cant come that far technically in something without at least a little bit of that happening. They did the best they could with the tools and experience they had at the time, thats all I could ask for.
Also, I think you’ve basically posted this same topic under a different title before…
Negative on that one (unless you’re talking about the 3D release thread).
Comparing it to today, though, things are getting more and more cartoony, and this is one of the few that strike me as realistic. The toys have great texture, and the interiors are amazing. After rewatching it, the only that clearly stood out to me was the flat grass and carpet textures.
Well, I haven’t heard people on the boards here say that (as far as I can recall) and as I don’t really tend to talk about animation to many people outside of Pixar Planet, I guess I haven’t really heard that before.
To me, the animation in Toy Story is perfect as it is. It has to be said that animation has developed rapidly since its release, but I really don’t think it shows with Toy Story. You watch it and become engulfed by the film, and I don’t find myself thinking about how ‘poor’ the animation is or anything.
I agree with this topic 100%. I too notice that toy story is defenetly the most realistic work pixar has done in terms of looks. The textures are perfect. I really feel like I can reach out and grab every toy on screen. I still think its amazing.
So you’ve never complained that your food doesn’t taste good, or that movie sucked, or that car is ugly? It always irks me that some people have that mindset that you cant dislike something unless you know how to do/make it.
You don’t have to know how to do something to form an opinion of it. as long as your not making claims that you could do better, its not important.
Also, if your not allowed to dislike something due to lack of experience, then with that logic your also not allowed to like it either.
I didn’t mean it like that i meant that people complain about something that has done so well ad their comparing it to a action movie’s special affects their completly diffrent and without toy story /pixar specialy effects woud not be how advanced they are today.
EDIT- Please don’t use quotes within quotes, thanks!
Well, with all the backlash, I didn’t know if it was my own nostalgia, or if it really has stood the test of time. Either way, it still looks amazing in my eyes.
Goodness no you’re not the only one. The animation in Toy Story has never bothered me at all, and I’ve loved it since the first time I saw it. As a matter of fact if anything my love for it has increased over time!
For me the story became more important than the animation. It still looks great today. If it’s showing it’s age on anything it’s human characters and hair. Look at scud compared to buster. For all that, it doesn’t matter because your lost in the story. TS 2 looked better but lacked the emotional content and freshness of the original. Toy story was a pivotal moment in animation and will always remain so.
TS2 didnt lack the emotion content at all in my opinion. I can agree about the freshness I guess, but TS2 was just as emotional if not more so with Jessie’s backstory and Woody realising he’s not going to last forever.
The most emotional scene in the first was Buzz realissing he wasnt who he thought he was, and Woody swallowing his pride. Beyond that there wasn’t much else. the rest was mainly about jealousy and revenge. two pretty short term things.
TS2 had more emotional themes going on if you ask me. things that had more impact on the characters lives as a whole.
I totally understand what you’re saying, and here’s my explanation: Toy Story does look realistic, because it was done on purpose, yes, but I think it was also done so realistic-like on accident as well, at the time they couldn’t stylize it better. Movies are getting cartoony, but it’s on purpose. What people mean by how it’s advancing is simply that, they have the ability to create more complex images. Check out the plants in The Incredibles, or the hair in some of the recent Pixar films, or the light rays from the sun, it does look more realistic than Toy Story. It’s just the whole STYLE is less realistic. I think if Pixar really wanted to go for the effect of realism, it would truly look like it was filmed in live action. But the “cartoony” look is to make it more appealing to Kids, and also because it is Art
Thanks for your input. It clearly shows that Pixar is becoming more advanced by their animated shorts, and in what we’ve seen of Toy Story 3, it actually has a great visual contrast to the original, which before, I never fully understood why.
As I’m sure you have realized, you are not the only one! Haha.
I too think Toy Story is still a classic. It is true that sometimes the animation and technology seem old or dated (and I mainly see that in Andy and his mom), but none of that matters.
Take for instance the original King Kong. In comparrison to the Peter Jackson update, it looks really bad. However, it isn’t bad; it is a classic film. Peter Jackson’s film on the other hand, is not considered a classic.
Toy Story is a classic now, and it will forever be one. The longevity of the film is not due to the technology, but due to the story. The creative minds at Pixar gave us a brilliant and tremendously imaginative story and script that will forever live in the heart of any fan of cinema.
jealousy is an emotion. It’s a lack of control over ones feelings. Woody had to deal with the feeling of being second place and losing his place to Buzz in Andys heart. That coupled with the gang turning their back on him made Woody the saddest character in the film. He went from hero to zero. Yet through all the adversity he finds the strength to overcome it all. That in my book is strong emotional content. TS2 had it’s moments for sure, but for me not as much as TS.
