Animation is NOT just for kids!

There’s something I keep overhearing people saying where I work, and it

peeves me off big time.

We have Cars, and now in addition to that, Monster House, but sometimes when

someone makes the suggestion to their party about seeing either one (especially Cars), one person will either

respond, “Nah. I don’t wanna see a cartoon.” or “That’s a kid’s movie.” Now I don’t

know about you, but I think both responses have the same meaning: It’s animated, so it’s for kids.

I’m

sick of how some people view animation. They shouldn’t make the assumption that anything animated is just for

kids, because that is so far from the truth.

Animators, Cartoonist, painters, sculptors,

Directors, Sketchers… A very rare group of people. People who NEVER grew out of their inner-child. Cartoonist

love to draw, painters love to paint, And most (not all) Animatiors love to collect toys, play games and act like

a child These very rare, but inspiring people go to work on a day to day basis making things that kids and ADULTS

enjoy all over the world. Maybe these types of people are a little “werid” to those who work in movie

stores, or people who make houses, or older people who “seem to think cartoons are childish” But these

cartoons, these animations will ALWAYS be forever frozen in time. Wither it’s the “powerpuff girls”

maybe a preschool show, maybe a batman series, or a Pixar movie. These are ALL things people worked on and they

all should be considered as masterpeice as Mona Lisa, and they are. Even the worst painting on earth will be

remembered, with that said I say to you. Cheerish Animation, Cheerish a life created but a group of human

beings

Your friend,

I

agree. Besides, animation is just a way to tell a story. You got cartoons for kids, and some animation material

for adults. And you also got Pixar who aims at audiences of all ages. Then, you got the animating special effects

used in Pirates and other movies. Why do people say animation is just for kids? I don’t know. It perplexes me

too.

I

know a lot of people that if I were to ask them if they wanted to watch a Animated movie or a Pixar movie some of

them would say “Yea” or they would say “That a kids movie” or they would just say

“No”.

Some People just don?t know what there missing out on.

I

know!!! I’m so sick of that too! I’ve seen plently of adult animated shows and movies. Plus just because

something is labeled a “kids movie” doesnt mean an adult wouldnt like it. Like with Cars. A bunch of

people from my work saw it and they’re like 23, 22, 19, 18. So i dont know why people keep thinking that…

I bet you

anything these are the same people who watch The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and American Dad. It’s so

obvious that there are a lot of animated films out there that aren’t just for children. Animation in the early

90s were made for adults at first. Maybe there are too many Caillou-like shows being put on t.v.

I must

say, I am lovin’ everybody’s comments so far. :-D)

At work, these teens were indecisive of what

to watch. They peeked inside of Cars to see what it was, and the one guy said, "I told you! It’s a

cartoon!", and then they walked away. :unamused: Their loss.

Sad, isn’t it, that so many

people can be so judgemental of things that they haven’t even seen and don’t know anything about. Pixar strive

to make each and every one of their films entertaining for everyone, young and old, and yet there are still those

who refuse to even give animation a chance.

Then, there are those who are really up for enjoying

themselves- for example, when I went to see the Spongebob Movie with my friends, we expected a cinema full of

little children, yet were greeted with dozens of adults! The row behind us was occupied by about six or seven 20

year olds, who were even more eager to see the film than we were; they had bug pieces of card that spelt out

‘Spongebob’, and when the infamous theme tune started, they were the first to sing along!

If only more

people could be of this mindset. Ah well, their choice.

People are masters of judging things they haven’t seen. Cartoons are just one

example of this, and it’s not even limited to adults. I was a camp counselor this summer, and a favourite

question of the campers to ask me was “What’s your favourite TV show?” Well, I have limited TV

viewing, but I would always tell them that I love watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Invariably, I got the

response, "Ewww, you watch that show? That show’s

stupid.." Of course, when I asked them, they told me they’d never actually

watched it. Kids, I tell you. Even my 7-year-olds looked askance at me, and they’re way too young to be

jaded.

What people don’t realise is that almost anything can be good, with the right writers and

directors. It’s just another medium, or another genre, or whatever. So shows like Buffy and Firefly are super

duper campy. Well, yeah- and they embrace that, and are well written and awesome. Other shows of the same genre

have sucked. And yeah, Pixar makes cartoons. And they use the fact that it’s a cartoon to do stuff that only

cartoons can do, but they do it in a way that anyone can appreciate. So what if a lot of cartoons out there are

completely geared towards kids and are just mostly lame? Doesn’t make ‘em all bad. Even among the kids’

series. I, for one, adore Veggie Tales. Why? Because it’s smart and done well. And who can’t love a show

that can successfully parody The Mikado?

In short, don’t judge before you

watch. Because even I was a Buffy skeptic before I watched it, and now I fully embrace the amazingness.

I have always thought this.

Look at Beavis and Butthead
South

Park
Futurama
Family Guy
The Simpsons.

Yeah, I mean,

animation is just another way of expressing your ideas or yourself. And the sad thing is, many people can not see

that there are incredible things that one can learn from an animated movie, even if they are "kids

movies". Look at Cars… there are tons of little phrases and references that surly only the older audience

would understand (Freebird!) and they add to that touch of sophistication that lies in there.

What’s

strange is that I draw a lot myself and it is true that this represents a piece of me that is totally unwilling

to grow up and stop doodling whever I go. But if I look outside this side of me, I can be incredibly mature.

Animators and artists etc. are only kids when they want to be.

Good list, luxo. Might as well add:

Drawn Together
Robot Chicken
Aqua

Teen Hunger Force
any animated show on Adult Swim for that matter
The Critic
American

Dad
Duckman
King Of The Hill
…and the list goes on.

And look at some of the titles we’ve

listed. They’re some of the most popular TV shows today, and none of them are intended for

children.

Yeah very true.

As I high school student it’s tough to express Pixar fandom without somewhat being made fun of. While most of

my friends support my Pixar fandom, there are those that think I’m silly to be fans of "kids’

movies."

Pixar’s films are geared towards everybody. They have maturity and innocence, humor and

drama, quiet points and loud points. They are for the young at heart. For all those people who call any Pixar

film a “kids’ film,” they don’t deserve to be on this planet without first reevaluating themselves (I

mean it!).

Most of all, Pixar films are timeless. So when kids who watched Toy Story 11 years ago watch it

again today, they’ll remember what it was like being a young kid without feeling foolish.

Yup same here, my friends all say those movies aren’t

even funny, and want to go see a teen movie or something. LOL.

But, can’t we watch both. :unamused:

I’d like to also add that shows

originally meant or seen for children has actually been known to have reached a higher standing in that they

often present very mature themes that most censor dudes out there wouldn’t realize.

I am talking of

course, about Gargoyles. Always intended to appeal to boys 8-12 (or something like

that), it was actually popular in MANY different age groups and genders, sometimes hitting even the adult

range!

And if you didn’t know, the show was known to have included mature themes of vengeance, the

sacrity of life, gun safety, even lessons about literacy, not to mention lessons against bigotry!

And yes,

it was animated. But so what? As Brad Bird has said countless times, animation is merely a form of expressing a

drama or comedy. It’s not a genre in itself. In this case, animation helped Disney to create it’s first

animated drama television series, one that is still cherished by fans TWELVE years later!

Remember what Brad Bird said, "Animation is not a

genre, it’s an art form." Also, "The next time somebody asks me what it’s like to work in the

animation ‘genre’, I’m going to punch them in the face." Or something to that effect.

That’s one reason why I’m such

a huge fan of Brad. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind, and he knows what he’s talking about.

You tell

'em, Brad!

~~=oP

LOL, did he really

say that, temper temper. :sunglasses:

Haha, wouldn’t surprise me.
