Annie Awards!

The Annie Award nominees have been announced, and WALL-E is of course in there several times. Mr. Lasseter also has something special in the mix! ^^

The link doesn’t seem to be working, but yay for WALL-E and John Lasseter! Thanks for the information, Netbug009.

Sorry. My fault. It should work now.

That is really good news, but I kinda expected WALL-E to be nominated for several awards. I bet they will win everything it gets nominated for.

Jurried Awards…
1-John Lassester for Walle and Bolt

Go, WALL-E!!
Although I didn’t expect Kung Fu Panda to get so many nominations, it’s still great to see WALL-E get 8 and Pixar get 9 in total. At least the nominees are deserving movies and I hope WALL-E wins everything it’s nominated for!

I like the idea of a “this is who I hope wins” list. My turn!

PRODUCTION

  1. WALL-E all the way. Totally WALL-E.
  2. I haven’t seen any of those, to be honest. ^^;
  3. Presto… but if I saw the new Wallice and Gromit I’d probably be very torn up.
  4. Again, haven’t seen or at least don’t remember any of these.
  5. I’m not fond of any of these.
  6. Avatar, though I have yet to see the new Fosters and I heard it was great, so no complaints if that wins.
  7. WALL-E. While it didn’t take long to beat, that was a fun game.

INDIVIDUAL

  1. WALL-E on this one. I mean, the effects in this were great.
  2. Again WALL-E. The character animation was so important in this and it was executed perfectly.
  3. Haven’t seen any of these.
  4. While I haven’t seen it, from the posters Igor looked like it had some nice designs. Kung Fu Panda also did a good job, though I can’t say the character designs were omigosh so original! on that one.
  5. EL TIGRE! Underrated show, totally. That was a good episode too.
  6. GO MR. STANTON, GO!
  7. Avatar. Yes. That finale deserves an award, big time.
  8. Kung Fu Panda had some great music. Out of the available options, I’d go for that.
  9. …Wow, I’m behind on my television animation.
  10. Oh, now HERE is a hard one. All of these have wonderful design in different ways. WALL-E has incredibly detailed sets and cool Sci-Fi. Bolt takes new leaps in photorealism. Despeareux looks to have a unique style yet true to its fairy tale upbringing. Kung Fu Panda has some breathtakingly beautiful Chinese design. This one is anybody’s game, and I’d be fine with anybody taking it home.
  11. Haven’t seen any.
  12. Well, can’t judge on Despearuex, but otherwise I’m torn between Kung Fu Panda and WALL-E (good grief, I never thought I’d see the day I’m even debating anything between Dreamworks and PIXAR. KFP came out of nowhere.) It’s hard because they are so very different. WALL-E has simple storyboarding that is carefully placed to help the animation, not to mention how they used the camera to feel so real! Meanwhile, KFP has some of the best action storyboarding I’ve seen in a long time, and has some really cool shots. Unless ToD flies out of nowhere, this is between those two IMO.
  13. Haven’t seen these.
    14.WALL-E. Yes.
  14. Haven’t seen these.
  15. …Okay, I’ve been trying to not comment, but WALL-E should seriously be here. xD KFP out of the options though.
  16. Totally bias, but El Tigre plz. xD

this is likely the first time that a Pixar film doesn’t get the nomination for best music and best writing :open_mouth:
I think that WALL-E has several problems in its second part, and I didn’t like very much the score (I loved Nemo and had great expectations), but look at the other nominees… KFP, Horton… it’s unfair…

Am I the only one who thinks ‘Kentucky Fried Panda’ every time I see KFP?

I think that WALL-E deserves the Best Music award. How is stuff like Horton Hears a Who being nominated for that sort of award and WALL-E isn’t? Also, there does seem to be quite an extreme amount of nominations for Kung Foo Panda. I’ll reserve judgement, as I haven’t actually seen it, but three nominations for Best Voice Actor? Was the voice acting really good in that film or something?

But nevertheless, WALL-E has done very well and there’s a special congratulations for John Lasseter on his special award.

Pewpewpew5522- Well, I haven’t been, but I will now!

Well, I do recommend that you watch Kung Fu Panda, because I think it is really well made, and is certainly a big step-up for DreamWorks (although Monsters vs. Aliens seems like another step-down - but I’ll reserve my judgment on that since it hasn’t been released).

As I mentioned in one of my comments at Upcoming Pixar, the small number of nominations that WALL-E received likely had to do with the movie’s “unconventionality”, if you will. The movie, first of all, had little dialogue (and sadly, some people seem to equate “writing” with “dialogue”), which explains why it wasn’t nominated for its writing. Also, it had very few non-background characters, which made it less likely to get multiple nods for Character Design and Voice Acting. Kung Fu Panda, on the other hand, had plenty of voice actors (plenty of lead characters in general), and had lots of dialogue, much like your typical film, animated or not.

WALL-E is in fact being considered by many Oscar analysts (at least from the sites that I’ve been to) as a front-runner for several categories, including Best Original Score (yes, it is sad that it wasn’t nominated for its music at the Annies), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song (“Down to Earth”), and of course, Best Animated Feature. (If it ends up winning all those awards, I think it will officially become the winning-est animated film in history at the Oscars, but just take that statement with a grain of salt since I haven’t really done my research on that topic). It is also considered by many to be a strong contender for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing. Here’s hoping that WALL-E also gets nominated for Best Picture, not because it’s about time to have an animated picture nominated for that award (i.e., not for political reasons), but because WALL-E more than deserves it.

However, just for the record and to be completely honest, I am rooting for The Dark Knight to win Best Picture, because in my humble opinion, that is the best movie of 2008, and one of the best that I’ve seen in my life (from the ones that I’ve seen - and I’ve seen plenty I assure you). I won’t go into the reasons as to why since I don’t want to divert from the topic of this thread too much, but that is my opinion anyway.

Quote 1 = seconded all the way.

Quote 2 = People are predicting that stuff? Yay! 8D Grain of salt, of course, like you said, but still… I can dream.

I’m pretty sure WALL-E is going to smoke every single category it’s nominated for, haha!

Alright, I can’t wait for January 30. But I agree, Wall-E deserves more nominations. At least it will have more oscar nominations. I also think that Kung fu panda got more than it deserves.

While I was surprised not to see Thomas Newman nominated for the music in WALL•E, look at some of the composers who were nominated. John Powell is nominated for Horton Hears A Who, and is nominated along with Hans Zimmer for Kung Fu Panda. John Powell, and Hans Zimmer are amazing composers, (that doesn’t change no matter what company they are hired by), and definatly could take home the Annie for Kung Fu Panda. I think that Thomas Newman’s music for WALL•E is different, from these two, in the sense that it seems to almost have a melencholy feel at times. I have noticed this in a lot of his music. Compared to Randy Newman, his music has more of a minor key feel. I do love it though.

As for the three nominations in the voice category for Kung Fu Panda, they are deserving. The voices in that movie were one of the things that many reviewers stated to raise it to the next level. I would guess that this award may go to Ian McShane for Tai Lung. (In general, Kung Fu Panda has more awards than WALL•E, because of multiples in categories, such as the three voices nominated here… but these ones are all deserving.)

As for the storyboarding category, if you read the ‘Art Of’ books for any of those movies, you will see that the art is deserving for all of them.

WALL•E is in a tough year, and all of the movies derserve the nominations. Who will win? I don’t know, but whoever does worked hard to achieve it, no matter what company they worked for.

You seem to know more about these guys than I’m familiar with, C-3PO, but could we really listen to the soundtracks of either of these movies 50-100 times and still enjoy them, as with Wall•E? I’ve seen both of those movies and very much enjoyed them.

I was dismayed at the results of the Annies. Stanton & Co. must have felt like fools for even showing up at the ceremony, to be treated like that, however inadvertently. They are human and smart enough to know the quality of what they came up with.

I posted a comment at the Variety link, it might show up.

Here are a few links about tonite’s non-results:

aintitcool.com/node/39956
incontention.com/?p=4251
examiner.com/p-293259~DreamW … wards.html

Like someone at the ‘incontention’ site said, this is a near disastrous, humiliating thing to happen to this particular award group. This is about as competent as giving Elton John or Bruce Springsteen a Grammy for best song or album when they are a quarter century past their prime and irrelevant or unlistened to.

I am disgusted by the majority of the Annies voters and appaled by the results. I suspect some Pixar jealousy, like: they won for everything since Nemo, let’s just completely snub the best reviewed movie of the year. Oh, well. There’s always (the way more important) Oscars.

Someone on another board pointed out how Dreamworks is one of the key sponsors of the event. It’s all about money.
And I do think that Kung Fu Panda was a good movie, but it didn’t deserve to get a full sweep there…

I included one nomination because we don’t yet know if it will win or not at London. This also isn’t counting the numerous Top 10 lists and #1 spots it has taken for lesser-known venues. And of course isn’t counting the many Best Animated Feature awards it has won, but the point I’m trying to make is…

Best Picture Wins for Kung Fu Panda

Umm…

Wow. Great news for KFP, after all the snubs at every award show finally there’s some people recognize it for its own merits. WALL-E is a boring snorefest, he looks like Jonny 5 and should’ve died, its second half sucks, it’s offensive to fat people, it’s the most overrated and worst Pixar film EVAH!!!

No, I can’t be sarcastic enough. Man, like it or not you can’t deny the fact that WALL-E is one of the best films of the year in general concensus, both with critics and audiences alike, top 10’s, RT scores, LA, Chicago, blah blah blah… KFP is no where near the top, anywhere. Now we’re supposed to believe it’s better than WALL-E, Bashir, and the beautiful $9.99? It’s hardly any better than Bolt, for crying out loud. KFP is good, I can live with it winning something, but totally beat out WALL-E and Bashir? Come on, did it just “happen” that the ASIFA people like it more? I can cry foul and conspiracy, while I refuse to believe the Gold Sponsor has anything to do with the results (who knows if Pixar wasn’t Gold Sponsor sometime?), I still think a total snub is more than suspicious.

  • WALL-E was snubbed in music and writing nominations, but later nominated for both Oscars. Don’t even tell me Madagascar 2 has a better screenplay or Despereaux has a better score.
  • The KFP ads as “the most celebrated animated film of the year -13 Annie noms” are everywhere. Don’t tell me you’re too naive not to see any politics here. Now they can brag about it.
  • The only time Pixar got empty handed was 1999, when Iron Giant won and A Bug’s Life got zero out of 4 noms.
  • The second time a Pixar film lost was Monsters, Inc., no, not to Shrek, but to Spirited Away, yet it got one award out of 8 noms. But both ABL and MI never quite got the appreciation WALL-E has gotten this year.
  • When Cars won over Happy Feet, there were some backlash leading to the Oscar lost, yet it got two awards out of 9 noms.
  • The only time a DWA film won was Shrek, but not over a Pixar film. Now they can really brag about it.
  • They give John Lasseter a career award in the year his company’s most critically-acclaimed film gets completely snubbed.

I’m not an animator so I don’t know how hard it is to animate KFP, but is it easy to animate WALL-E or rotoscope Bashir? Heh. When some animated film is hailed as “transcend the genre”, then the common sense is to recognize it in any form in your own society, but nah, they passed. Maybe they have their reasons, maybe it’s just happened, but it’s a missed chance and yeah, something will go into history if anyone cares about these kinds of awards.

  • If you say WALL-E isn’t revolutionary then tell me how KFP is.
  • If you say WALL-E is boring then tell me how Curse of the Were-rabbit were more fun than Madagascar.
  • If you say WALL-E makes less money thus less people actually enjoy it, then tell me what’s with Spirited Away and Iron Giant.
  • If you say WALL-E has a weak ending compare to its first half, then tell me how consistent mediocrity wins over poetic brilliance.
  • If you say WALL-E’s first half isn’t brilliant, then tell me how any minute KFP is.
  • If you say WALL-E is full of cliché and trite, then tell me how on earth KFP is any better.
  • If you say WALL-E, or Bashir, or $9.99, or even Bolt, is worse than KFP, please enlighten me.

Last words, enough ranting, WALL-E is the biggest loser at the Annies, but it’s over. Yeah, maybe KFP is the best and all that, and the ASIFA rocks too.

Posted it over at awardsdaily, so you guys don’t have to bother with my ranting.
