Are there any Avatar fans out there? If so, then this news will knock you out! Not only is the spinoff from the same creators of the original show, but it acts as a fully fleshed out epilogue series, while taking place 70 years after the events of the first show. I can’t wait, for The Legend of Korra (that’s what it’s called as of now), to come out. Here’s a link to an article on IGN.com for more information including a promotional picture: http://uk.tv.ign.com/articles/110/1107556p1.html

Consider my socks knocked off; this is so exciting! The best news I have heard all day

I just read the description. This sounds very interesting and I am excited to see where else it will go, considering that Korra is already amster of three elements. It is very exciting to see that the air benders are returning though! The nomads are my favorite and I was so sad that they were almost entirely anhilated.

I will miss Aang though… it will be so sad to watch a new series without the most crucial Avatar of all time

Luckily though, Aang should reapper when Korra needs guidance from past Avatars. This would be similar to how Roku (the avatar befoe Aang) so often appeared.

I just hope that this new series can find a plot that is as powerful and meaningful to the show’s world as the original series. It is going to be difficult to get the stakes higher than the fire nation about to take over the entire world whil at the same time killing the last air bender on the planet.

Nah, anime type shows don’t have an interest to me anymore.

Holy crud, this looks awesome. I can’t wait. I’m a huge fan of the original series! Hopefully will breathe some life into the Nick lineup.

?!?!?!?!A show based on a movie based on a show?!?!?!?!?!?!

Actually it’s “A show based off of anime based on a movie based on a show based off of anime”.

And people wonder why I start complaining about things being unoriginal.

Wow :open_mouth: That’s a lot…

The movie is an entirely different project. This is based on the show completely. The movie isn’t even canon.

And Flik-E, I have to disagree with you about this show being unoriginal. I think it’s one of the rare exceptions of the terrible American made anime style shows of recent years. Avatar is probably one of the best cartoon series I’ve ever seen (certainly the best Nick show). There’s a huge story, with lots of good character development and it all seems to make sense by the end. Season 1 isn’t the best, but 2 and 3 are spectacular. Not to mention, the art and animation actually have a lot of effort put into them unlike most “American animes”. I think you should check it out and you might think differently than you do right now.

Sorry, but I guess any American cartoon that uses an anime style doesn’t interest me when I feel we’ve always had our own style, and so many of the cartoons I grew up on that were made here went by that style. Shows like Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Bonkers, Darkwing Duck, Dexter’s Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Rocko’s Modern Life, and even Spongebob Squarepants all followed the influence of classic Looney Tunes, Disney, and Hanna-Barbera. That’s what I’ve always thought of as American animation.

Even though I’ve never once watched it, the original series of Avatar is only considered unoriginal to me in the sense that it’s lifted off of Japan and not us. I guess that’s the only reason.

You’ve never watched the show and you’re calling it unoriginal and claiming it’s lifted from Japan? Good grief. And then dissing it because it’s not your idea of “American animation”? Lame.

First off, it’s the story that matters most. Secondly, that’s just plain close minded. That’s as bad as studios claiming that only CGI movies sell and the people that think only 2D movies are worth watching.

As Bryko614 said, this second series is based off the original series which was not based off anything. It may have an “anime” like style but that’s it.

I finished watching the series for the first time this morning. Highly enjoyed it though the end felt a bit anti-climatic. Can’t wait to see what they do with this new series.

Well I guess I’m close minded cause I’ve been working on cartooning myself and I want to focus on more old-school influences, so I try to avoid anime as much as possible for getting ideas, but that’s not easy because anime is everywhere. It’s because I want my characters to be drawn like Bugs Bunny and not have big anime style eyes and “lip-flap” mouths.

As for the whole 2D vs 3D thing, I know very well that it’s a misconception that animated films are only good if they’re one or the other. Being CGI doesn’t change the fact for me that Pixar has great stories and great characters that I just love. If I thought Pixar was so evil for being CGI I would not even be here with so many other fans supporting them and their films. Now I may prefer working in 2D myself since I find it more appealing, but I try not to imply that 3D is bad in itself when I know it’s really how it’s used and how good those films are made that decides that, and both types of animation have their own special qualities about them. My real problem in this case is just that nowadays there’s an uneven balance between the two of them and wishing it didn’t have to be like that, not really CGI itself.

I guess I don’t think of anime in the same way though since both that and the kind of shows I described are 2D. I see it as “American style 2D” and “Japan style 2D” and have trouble seeing why we need to base any of our shows around theirs when Avatar seems like something that could very easily have been made in Japan for real as a real anime. And animated films can even be in CGI and still follow an American style. All of Pixar’s films do in my opinion.

First of all, this new show isn’t based on the movie at all, and is simply a continuation of the story with completely different characters. Second of all, I know a lot of people dislike the show, but don’t be too quick to judge something before you even see it. If you think you won’t like Avatar you probably won’t, but I hope you can at least understand why the rest of us do. The animation is breathtaking and the action is better then in most live action films. It’s truly some of the greatest and most believable fighting coreography I’ve ever seen anywhere. The score is great and the characters are likeable. The series switches from being hillarious, to being scary, to being emotional. I’ts dark and hardcore and a huge step up from other kids shows. Some time around the end of the 1st Season there were a few signifigant episodes that were on a completely different scale from the earlier episodes. It was serious and smart, and became a huge hit with adults as well as their children. It’s like the Pixar of kids TV shows; it’s funny, brilliant, and emotional all the way through, and that is why I love Avatar.

Hmm, I never really got into Avatar. But I’ll probably end up watching this spin off, anything is better than what Nick is currently showing!

It just really bugs me when someone dismisses anime because of big eyes or whatever. That’s the same thing as dismissing animated movies for being kiddie. It’s a medium, not a genre, and there is a wide range of styles and types of anime. (Anime being, to me, any animation made in Japan)

And the reason it was not made in Japan was because it was not made by the Japanese. It’s rather silly to expect them to move to Japan to make it or think they should only use a western designs. (the cultures of the series are Asian based after all and many of the basics of the story [Avatar, chakra, fighting styles, the four elements, etc] are Asian based as well.)

Well when you put it that way, I guess the anime style is the art form that Japan has since they developed their animation in a somewhat different way, but I think here we’ve made anime out to be a genre. Of course no one knows better on animation not being a genre than Brad Bird.

That’s exactly what I meant. Whenever a show is widely considered to be anime, I feel like I can’t truly call it an anime unless it’s something that originated straight out of Japan. There’s no reason why anime shows can’t co-exist with ours in the US (even if they’re dubbed by someone like 4Kids), but I guess my argument was why do we have to make shows be like anime. But I guess that brings up the genre confusion again.

Words cannot express how much this excites me! It will be kind of sad that Aang isn’t alive anymore (speaking of that, I wonder if the other original characters will still be alive? Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, etc…hmmmm), but I still can’t wait for this to come out!

Aww yee! Another uber excited person.

I have a feeling one or two of these characters will be around. The saddest thing is, though… Uncle Iro won’t be in it  He was my favorite character.

To address this whole anime debate…

Sure the characters appear to be of Asain decent, but that choice fits the world of the show much better than traditionaly American looking people (one of the reasons, in my opinion, the film was not a success). And sure, the style of the show appears to be influenced by anime, but that is because the show is influenced by anime! However, it is not a direct product of anime; it is merely influenced.

To quote an article in The New York Times from 2005 about the show:

Here is the link to the full article.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is not anime. It is an homage to anime by two traditionally trained American animators that worked on Family Guy and The King of the Hill.

Wow, I didn’t know they killed off Aang on the show. I take people’s word for it that the action and storylines are as good as everyone says they are, but unfortunately I guess I’ve been unwilling to give the show a chance ever since the day it was first announced on Nick because it simply didn’t meet my interests. I may have felt a connection towards those characters myself if I had.

Flik-E: Aang isn’t killed off on thus show. However, the new series takes place 70 years later, so Aang will probably be dead. I personally hope we get to see him one more time. Is it confirmed he won’t be around?

My mistake. Again, I probably would have known that already if I had been watching the show from the start (or cared). I apologize if I ruined everyone’s excitement. I’m just going to put my criticisms to rest now and think over them a bit.
