This is a mistake I nothised in the first Toy Story. At the start of the film One Eye Bart has Bo Peep hostage and gonna have her sheep runover, When you see her face, she is frowning anf has here eyes open like a human. Later in the film when Andy and his friends are running arounf the room, She has a diffirent face, she is smileing and is looking a diffrent diraction with her eyes a bit more closed. How is this possible if she is a porcelain lamp? Wouldent Andy or somebody notice here new expression?
Both of those instances happened before you see the toys come to life…it’s not like it was a secret, but I’ve heard people say it was to hint to you the toys are alive before it’s actually revealed.
Andy doesn’t see him on the first photo, so he could have changed his face expression for a while.
EDIT- Please don’t quote images, thanks!

Forshadowing!
I like this idea.
I always noticed that since I was a kid too, but they seemed to have abandoned the face changing thing during playtime in the two sequels.
Not true. potatohead had eye lids in the sequel at the end, yet doesn’t at the beginning. I’m sure there are other examples.
Still need to check TS3 for differences though.
Since we’re on this topic, is it just me or does Buzz have a much cheesier looking smile in #3?
In TS3, Slinky’s expression is an open-mouthed smile, whereas in TS1 at least (not sure about TS2), it’s a blank, closed-mouth look.
Things like this happen quite a bit in the beginning of the first Toy Story. With Potato Head his eyes are wide, but when Molly is banging him against the edge of the crib, his eyelids are lowered. Through the entire scene with Andy playing with Woody after he Saves the Day, his face changes nearly every shot, but it always his “Toy Mode” expression when Andy can see him.
Like someone mentioned, it’s mostly just some clever foreshadowing. I think it’s really neat how Pixar actually does these little details, even when most viewers won’t notice it. At least not on the first viewing.
I do think Buzz has a cheesier smile. In “Strange Things”, you can see he has eyelids even in Toy Mode, whereas by 3, he has no eyelids in Toy Mode -Omar
I’m pretty sure Buzz’s face stayed the same from Toy Story to Toy Story 2, he always had that serious action hero face. I’ll try to find a pic later.
I think the animators were just a little careless when it came to the faces in Toy Story 3 (whereas in the first Toy Story, the changing faces had a purpose).
They are closer, but not the same. In the second, Buzz’s Toy Mode has more of a smile, and in 3 his face is more like the actual Toys.
Actually, now that I’ve checked, Buzz definately has more of a smile when Andy’s playing with him in the beginning of Toy Story 2, however, the new Buzz has an identical face to the original. I’m still looking for a good pic of Buzz during the ‘Strange Things’ sequence. Since Buzz doesn’t yet realize he’s a toy, there’s no reason for him to have a different face, though there may be a mistake.
EDIT: His lips are a little less angular, but there’s no real change.
