I saw a “bolt” ad the other day and noticed the bolt on the dog. Then I thought “that looks a lot like the lightning sticker on lightning mcqueen”. I’m thinking they got the idea from cars.

Who can say for sure? Although, when I Googled images of Bolt, I accidentally stumbled upon this random blog entry:

It looks pretty shady to me.
i’d hate to jump to conclusions with disney but the possibility is great.
-_-" Another cynical issue.
The term, “rip-off” is so… harsh. The proper term to be used here is “inspiration.” Sure, Bolt’s lightning icon looks a lot like that of McQueen’s, but I don’t really see the seriousness of the matter unless Bolt is about a… oh, gee, I don’t know, a talking car thinking that it’s a real superhero instead of a dog?
And the “Shade of Blue” character, I couldn’t really tell that she was similar to that female character of Bolt till I took a closer look at their socks. That’s all I saw that was explicitly similar; the comparison of their shirt is just paranoia.
Um…I doubt it. At least, I dont think it would have been intentional. Lighting bolt motifs can come from anyplace. Although I will admit it did remind me of Lightning.
I guess the lightning bolt did sort of remind me of Lightning at first, but it’s such a small concept in the whole scheme of things that I can’t see how it’s been ripped off, exactly. Though I have to say, the similarities of the two characters in the link that PV has posted are most certainly striking, and a bit worrying…
I don’t think so. Its kinda hard to make a lot of variations on a lightning bolt.
John Lasseter is Executive Producer on Bolt, the worse that could have happened was that Disney used Lightning as inspiration.
“Rip off” is rather harsh to say, where to draw the line?
The whole idea of the deluded, hence kind of “arrogant” character finding himself and eventually becoming a “true hero” is not new at all. Buzz Lightyear, anyone?
I could think of more examples of such a story line…
I hate the term “ripoff” and the way people misuse it.
The answer is no.
If Bolt is a ripoff of Lightning McQueen, then WALL-E is a ripoff of Johnny 5.
Just because Pixar Animation Studios may be the best film company ever, it doesn’t mean the whole world and all the ideas revolve around them. Filmmakers do get inspirations from one another, and so does Pixar. That never means they “ripped-off” the other guy - they’re just trying to make their own movies and tell a story for all to enjoy.
Disney_Guy said it perfectly.
“Ripoff” is such a harsh term, especially when talking about this kind of stuff.
Ditto. Bolt is no ripoff of Lightning McQueen.
And isn’t there a lightning bolt in the Harry Potter logo? Lightning bolts are just a widely-used motif.
