I dont know if there was a topic regarding on the upcoming Bone feature, so here’s a topic of it anyways. Now a few months ago, there was an announcement of the animated feature of Bone(based on the comic from cartoonist Jeff Smith). For those who aren’t aware of it, its going to be made from Animal Logic(Happy Feet) and its going to be a computer animated motion capture film.
I can tell you this, I don’t have any hopes for this movie(and this is coming from a Bone fan). Why? Mainly because the idea of ‘motion capture’ and Bone do not mix well. And its obvious that it would work better off as a hand-drawn animated feature. But I am not agaisnt the people who are looking forward to this movie. It just sickens me that Jeff couldn’t stand up to those bums in Hollywood and demand that the feature of Bone be made in 2D or no film at all.
Seriously I am a long-time Bone fan (long time, psscht! Three years!)… I’m a moderator on a Bone fan forum, actually and I am actually very excited for the film - Jeff said it looks mind-blowing and I’ll gladly believe him.
What I’m really worried about is the voice actors. Please no silly celebrities for the heck of it…
Very excited about this! Bone is my favourite comic series, and I’ve been waiting for a movie for ages. I’ve heard that there have been several different attempts at making the Bone comics into an animated movie, but these were cancelled. So, I’m glad we’re finally getting one!
I think motion-capture animation will work well…but I’m probably in the minority there…
It’s a little jumping the gun to start a thread when there’s no poster or teaser out - but I guess now would be kinda good seeing that Animal Logic will be releasing the sequel to ‘that penguin movie’ in a few months time!
Been a huge fan since discovering it from Badger and a few other P Planet members back at the end of '09. I actually grew up as a kid reading it in the Sunday Funnies but not understanding a word! But I always admired the drawings - so it was thrilling to rediscover it as a grown-up and recognising a few of the panels, but now being able to appreciate it from an adult perspective!
I think Jeff Smith was pretty forthright when it came to the film adaptation of his beloved series. I remember reading many months ago that he fought against several studios who wanted to make it an ‘Alvin & The Chipmunks’ musical with contemporary music. For the love of the Red Dragon, I hope they don’t turn it into something like Alvin or the recent Smurfs!
Mocap, if done well, can be something among the heights of Gollum or Neytiri. Done poorly, it’d be a Polar Express or Mars Needs Moms. Personally, I have high hopes for Animal Logic. They’d used mocap to great effect in Happy Feet, and their pure character animation in Guardians was nothing short of breathtaking (I in fact rewatched the latter yesterday and am still blown away by the beauty of the movement and mannerisms of some of the characters). If they can repeat something like this for Bone, I think I can forgive them not doing a 2D version or a hybrid integrated live-action/CGI.
I really hope Jeff gets to oversee the project and have the final say. And I hope that it isn’t a frame-to-frame recreation devoid of narrative like Watchmen (which I haven’t seen, but which my friends say deviates from the source material). If they achieve something like they did with Legend of the Guardians (also based on a series of books, with minor deviations but still being able to standalone and keep the spirit intact), then I’ll be proud and satisfied.
Anyway, here’s my fanart of the SSRC. Quiche, anyone?
Me too, but I hope the CG of this can be good. I have a theory that the human characters could be done in motion capture while the bone cousins and non human characters are done in CG. But thats just a theory. But for the love of god a 2D film verison of Bone could have out hand-drawn animation return!
Little known fact, right around when bone started(I think it may have been when the great cow race was released) Nick approached to Jeff to make the Bone movie. Although they wanted to have music from Nysnc and Brittany Spears in it. It sounded like Nick didn’t read the graphic novels of Bone and wanted to make it for a quick buck. Thank god he rejected it. You know, I think a live-action/2D version of bone would be interesting to look at.
Mocap was also used in Donkey Kong Country the animated series - it took me half a year to find out. For its time, it was nothing short of impressive. Season one, at least. Mind you, this show was from around 1998.
Oh my god, Legend of the Crystal Coconut! I remember watching that as a kid on a bootleg VCD. My siblings and I would watch it again and again. Hooray for (movie) pirates! Drink up, me hearties - yo ho!
