Question
#1
Interviewer: How was reminooshiiresutoran(Ratatouille)
born?
Brad Bird: When I came to PIXAR for the INCREDIBLES in the year 2000 the
movie was already starting. Then a year and a half ago I was told that the story had a hard time, so I accepted
to be the director and finish off the story.
Question #2
Interviewer: Are
you conscious of the movie setting in the 1960’s? I was watching if it was real and I had an appetite for
it.
Brad Bird: That was our aim to make everyone have an appetite, so it’s good.
I was never conscious of the setting. Also, Paris has never changed from the past to now, but if you see the
cars in the city you do notice the years of the cars so we tried to make the scene of Paris ageless never old or
never new.
Brad Lewis: We wanted to build a timeless, ageless Paris and also we
wanted to show the restaurant like a three star restaurant and wanted to show the elegance of
Paris.
Question #3:
Interviewer: Where is the idea, which the small thing
controls the big thing like the mouse sitting on top of people and controls him, come from?
Brad
Lewis: The decision to control someone was already decided early. I think using the body as
comedy makes the situation funny.
Question #4
Interviewer: For you two
what kind of taste reminds you of Japan?
Brad Bird: I had eaten Japanese food
very often before I came to Japan. The sushi I had in LA reminds me of Japan.
Brad
Lewis: I like yakitori, shabu shabu, fish, sake, so I eat many kinds of Japanese food very
often.
Question #5
Interviewer: Why do you use a mouse as a hero even
though it’s a natural enemy in a restaurant?
Brad Bird: When we talk about the
movie, if the problem is big the movie will be funnier. The mouse who wants to be a chef is a difficult problem.
I think that’s funny.
Brad Lewis: The concept of this setting is impossible.
PIXAR is solving from the characters point view and to make the viewers understand.*
*Hiragana was used in
this sentence and not a Chinese character. I translated it to the best of my ability.
