Brave reference in Toy Story 3?

Just before Andy gives Woody to Bonnie, he says, “He’s Brave, like a cowboy should be.” Thus, all of the known Pixar films made and being made were referenced in the film, including Newt and Brave, not including sequels, though.

And before you say, “That’s not a Brave reference! He just randomly used the word!” let me show you that they carefully did this. First off, after saying “He’s Brave,” Andy had to pause to say the rest of the sentence. Second off, if Pixar were not making a film called “Brave,” there’d be no reason to say that Woody is brave, like a cowboy should be.

I will admit that it is interesting that Andy knows Woody so well, despite not knowing that he is actually alive. But still…Brave reference is there.

This is more then likely, and fairly certainly not a reference to Brave. They’ve already referenced Cars 2. I think Pixar likes to have as few references to future films as possible.

Have you not seen how emotional this scene is? The sheer power of this scene reduced us all to tears. Andy pauses after saying “Brave” because he’s very emotional about this. He’s giving up Woody, his favorite toy for “as long as [he] can remember.” The toy who he thought he lost or left behind in Toy Story. The toy he was very upset about ripping in Toy Story 2. The toy he decided to take to college with him. Woody is Andy’s favorite toy. He is pausing because just like the audience, he is very choked up on the sheer attachement to Woody he has over all three films and before them even; and now he is giving away the toy who is perhaps the most emblatic of his childhood. His time for fun is over, and Woody was the final tie to the time of his life he is now leaving.

Andy says Woody is “brave” and he knows Woody so well because that’s who Woody is. Woody is everything Woody has been in the entire trilogy, and he calls him brave because that’s how he imagines his toy. How he describes Woody is how he sees his favorite toy. The point of this ending is to show finally how Andy sees the toys. And this is how Andy sees him - “brave, like a cowboy should be.”

Why is there a Newt reference and not a Brave reference, then? I’m sure that they only like keeping references to future films a secret when the film itself is a secret. For instance, we don’t know what’s coming after Monsters, University. So I do not expect any references from that to be in Cars 2. However, I would not be surprised to see something from Brave.

And anyway, Lotso was in Up. Nemo was in Monsters, Inc. They ALWAYS make references to future films if they can, provided the public knows that film is coming.

Where do you see a Newt reference?

Yes, Lotso by himself was in Up. Nemo by himself was in Monsters, Inc. Single cameos intended to fly over viewers heads, but be an easter egg for the future.

Did you even read all that I just posted about Andy and Woody?

You’re just reading too much into it. If they really wanted a Brave reference, they would’ve put in a VISUAL easter egg to it, not in the script.

Yes, I read what you said about Woody and Andy, and I kinda thought that might be it, but still, it seemed that way…

Anyway, the Newt reference is visual. On Andy’s bedroom door, there is a picture of a newt on a street sign, like Newt Crossing or something.

I’m not sure, but wasn’t Brave previously ( and recently) called the Bear and the Bow? I am not quite sure when the title was changed, but wasn’t it changed after the theatrical release of Toy Story 3? Just my guess.

true, just look closely to the door, zoom it if you can

here it is in a larger version:

I would bet money it was a coincidence(if you would even call it that). I mean, Brave is a fairly common word.

Have you seen my eyes? I think they rolled away…

Sorry, but this is just a stretch of imagination. As everyone said, “brave” is a very common word, and yes, it makes sense in the speech context.

Why isn’t there a Brave reference, you ask? Who said there isn’t? We don’t know practically anything about that movie. When we get more information, we may discover that something on TS3 (and most probably Cars 2) is a reference.

A bit of a stretch with regards to the quote… ‘Brave’ was also named ‘Bear and the Bow’ during TS3’s production, and dialogue tracks are usually recorded in advance after rough animation, so it’s unlikely they’ll sneak in the new title in time.

I’m more curious to see the Newt signboard though… I’ve tried zooming in but I still can’t see it. Can someone circle it out for me or crop the photo? Need to get my eyes checked…

Danke Schön!

I doubt that this is a reference. In the games that Andy would play as a child, Woody was always the hero, and brave. And the pause was probably for dramatic effect.

TDIT makes a very good point. I didn’t think in the title change.

I think there definitely will be a Brave reference in Cars 2, but we probably won’t know about it for awhile after the film’s release. It would be nice if there’s one in TS3 and we don’t find out about it till then either, but I think it will definitely happen in Cars 2.

I didn’t think about that! I think it’ll be simple throwing in a Brave reference for Cars 2. I mean, Scotland is part of the U.K., and portion of the movie is set there. Can’t wait to see how they fit it in!
