Brilliant interview with Ed Catmull

Founder of Pixar:

Ed Catmull rarely does these kinds of things. I’m glad I can know more about the technical founder of Pixar.

Thanks for sharing!

Just for the record, Ed Catmull is not the “technical” founder of Pixar.

He is THE founder of Pixar, with Alvy Ray Smith. And he was very much the creative head, as well as technical, until he hired John Lasseter.

Check out the book “George Lucas and the Digital Revolution” for the most complete history of Pixar written anywhere. Great book, by the way.

Or To Infinity and Beyond! It’s VERY detailed and informative.

Wow. That guy is truly a great man. That was really informative and inspiring. I was happy to hear how strongly he felt about 2-D animation and how he wants to annihilate all those idiotic misconceptions people have about the medium. His answers were very thorough. He’s obviously a very intelligent man and very passionate about what he does. (humble too) I loved how he admited that he’s hired people who are “smarter” than him. I found that amusing. Sometimes I think interviews can be kind of boring, (cause they might go off on tangents and talk about stuff that I don’t care about) but this was a very focused, interesting interview and is well worth listening to.

I actually didn’t know he was the founder. Obviously, I don’t know much about Pixar’s history.

To Infinity and Beyond is an OK book. But the most complete and concise history of the founding of Pixar is, by far, “Droidmaker: George Lucas and the Digital Revolution.” It has more cooperation with a much wider and diverse cross section of the founders of Pixar than the new book. It also goes into much greater depths.
