Buzz's laser sounds

I tried to look to see if there was already a thread about this and didn’t find one. If there is, feel free to point me in the right direction and lock this one.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this in the first TS movie. Buzz seems to have a different laser sound for each of his personas (toy Buzz and space ranger Buzz) When Andy activates his laser (or if it gets stepped on, as happens twice by Sid and Hannah) it has more of a siren-y kind of sound if that makes any sense. But when Buzz himself (or another toy) activates it (and no one else is around) the sound is completely different - like the sound Thinkway uses for the TSC Buzz. I don’t know if this changes once Buzz figures out his toy-ness. I don’t think Buzz had a need for the laser during the scenes after this. I haven’t watched TS2 with that specifically in mind (except to the best of my memory I think Utility Belt Buzz has the “TSC” sound when he activates his laser in the presence of other toys).

I wondered up until I got my TSC Buzz if they’d make the differentiation and have the “toy” and “space ranger” laser sounds be different. They didn’t but I can see why that would be very hard to do. I much prefer the “space ranger” sound to the “toy” sound anyway.

Was just curious to see if anyone else had noticed this.

Yeah, I noticed, and I have no idea why they did that. Even while he’s in space ranger mode, it makes the other sound effect. I agree with you that the toy mode sound effect suites him better.

It’s also worth noting that the 1995 Thinkway had a similar laser sound effect. It’s only later that I found out that it was the original laser effect that was used in early mock-ups.

Oh, wow… that’s interesting! I didn’t have a 1995 Buzz… I wanted one SO bad but I had just turned 21 when TS came out and was trying to “give up” toys and such (didn’t work, of course  I shoulda just went ahead and got him.) My cousin did have one and I’m wondering if she still has hers. Would like to compare it to my TS3 and TSC Buzzes.

the Mattel buzz does has that lazor sound:

i think in the tsc buzz, they should of put a trigger in his hand, for when the hand is pointing/facing down and the lazor button is pressed, it would play the lazor sound, and when normal it would play the aiming sound (the one that comes with the tsc buzz)

I noticed this with the lazor too. I think the TCS Buzz should have the lazer sound that buzz has in the begining of strange things wehre Andy makes him shoot Woody in toy mode, but the sound he currently has in space ranger mode.

I was about to make a thread like this… anyway. When Buzz used his lazer it was like the TSC one. Thats like when hes aiming his lazer. & The other effect is the little siren is when he fires. Like when he fired at Baby Face.

Oh, wow. I can’t believe I didn’t notice that. :open_mouth: Very interesting.

Yeah, and I’ve also noticed that when Buzz shoots his laser at Woody when they first meet, he’s not actually pressing the button, why is that?

I noticed that too, he’s not actually pushing the button, his fingers are just splayed around it. The only thing I can think of is that he can’t actually reach it because of physics, but his fingers are actually over the button. Or that is how the “Real” Buzz fires a Lazer, and since he thinks he’s Buzz he does the same.

Also, my thoughts are that since he is a toy, and he has the lazer built into him, that he can control it without pressing the button. Such as when he is “Scanning” the perimeter with it in Sid’s backpack, and when the Gravity Belt Buzz scans to find which way to go through the AC of Al’s apartment building.

Then why would he keep his fingers over the button?

Like I said, my best guess is that the “Real” Buzz from TV does it that way (some sort of aiming technique, or he has his hand over it to make it shoot) because except for the “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command” series, I don’t think that the real Buzz Lightyear would have a massive button on his uniform, but he does in Star Command which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

On the other hand, it may be that Pixar animated it that way to make it look like he’s pushing the button, but for some reason he doesn’t really push it. Like they didn’t want to animate the button going in or something. That doesn’t seem anywhere near as likely, though. Again, my guess is that he is simply emulating the Buzz Lightyear that that Toy thinks he is.

Wow, these are all good theories!

It makes a lot more sense knowing that the TSC sound was the aiming sound, or on “stun,” and the actual firing sound is that full laser on “kill.” I wish they made it clear how Buzz switched it. Then again, it could just be a thing that only happens when he’s alive, like those beeping and buzzing sound effects he makes when he either falls or gets bear-hugged.

The fact that Buzz can fire his laser without pressing the button is often regarded as a mistake, but I think it was intentional. In the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie, Buzz actually removes his gauntlet and it keeps firing. Again, I have no real explanation, but it seems it happens when his hand is pointed down.

A possible explanation for the stun to kill transition is that, going back to what OneEyedBart95 was saying, he was just hovering his finger over the button when he was aiming (or not even pressing it at all), and when he’s ready to fire, he presses it.
